Well That Was Unexpected... Sewing On My Juki 1541S

Congrats for trying again!! Oh my dear Jess-please learn to use the backstitch! So much easier! Then, to avoid having to hold the threads to the right side at the beginning of the seam, stitch onto a scrap of fabric-2-3 thicknesses thick, at the beginning and end of the seam-then you just snip the scrap off. I have had an upholstery shop over 40 years and bought a Juki DNU-1541 around 15 years ago and love it! I always keep appr 2" squares of scraps to sew thru and never have issues with the thread at beginning or end. Also, if your needle isn't quite lined up right with the thread, it def can and will cause breakage-that's about the only time I may have issues-or a dull needle that needs to be changed out! The groove on my needle is supposed to be on the left side-you might check your book to see which side the groove is supposed to go on yours! I'm sure yours is a newer version of my machine, so I don't know if they changed the groove side or not? Keep up the good work-you've got this! Anything else I can give you suggestions for please ask!! Love to help people!!

I have been sewing on domestic machines for 40 plus years. About 7 years ago I bought a Juki 8700. I sewed on it once or twice. I really didn't enjoy working with it. I felt uncoordinated for some reason. So I sold that machine 2 years later. Luckily I didn't lose any money so it was a wash. In the past 5 years I have gotten more and more into vinyl materials and such. Even though I bought the Juki TL18QVP which can handle thicker materials, I started to feel like the layers and thickness I wanted to use in my projects were just to much even for the 18QVP. So after much deliberation, and some drooling over those using the industrials on KZbin - I pulled the trigger yet again. This time I went for the 1541S with a speed control and needle positioner. This time I camped out in front of the machine determined not to get intimidated or discouraged. And OMG - it was instant LOVE!!! Sampson (my 1541S) and I hit it off in a big way. A match made in heaven. So Deliah (my TL18QVP) only has to do the light work while Sampson treads through everything else. Both machines are instrumental in making bags and using heavier weight fabrics. I have thread (Siah's thread - Love it) in both weights in all the colors I own - Tex 45 for Deliah and Tex 70 for Sampson. This arrangement is super efficient. I love this pair and wouldn't trade them for anything. Someday I will by their cousin the cylinder arm 1341. But that's after retirement and a larger work space so they can be all together like a family. So kudos Jess for not giving up. I think especially with the bags you make, a thicker material version made on an industrial sets the bar a little higher - go for it!

I have a Juki DU 1181n and got it from Steve at Sewing Gold in Chicago about 3 years ago. It came with a ¾ Hp servo motor. The jack rabbit start scared me half to death. Made me really nervous. Consulted with Steve and purchased a 1 Hp con sew brushless motor with needle positioner AND a smaller (40mm) pulley. That absolutely slowed down the machine starts like my domestic. Really love sewing on it now. Use it for thicker fabric like vinyl etc and use a 18 needle with Tex 70 thread. Have had no problems. That smaller pulley was the trick for me!

On my 1541, I can tell when the bobbin is getting low because you can hear it rattling around. It took me a while to discern the difference in sound but the more I use it the easier it gets.

I’ve worked in the manufacturing world and I’m very comfortable with industrial machines and I now have a DU 1181 at home. It took me some time to hear the slight tin sounding rattle it makes when the bobbin gets low. Take some time to just listen to your machine. Once you recognize the sound, it will become very easy to hear it. The more comfortable you get with your machine, the more sounds you will be able to connect to what it’s doing.

As for the needles. Industrial needles have a hollow sharp blade that fades to the right. The sharp arc blade should usually face to the right. Thread goes right to left not front to back, hope that helps.

I then avoided it but I then decided to put my big girl pants on and go out of my comfort zone. 2 years on I couldn’t imagine life without it and using a domestic machine now drives me crazy. I had issues for years not being able to use my industrial ultra feed LS1. It was my second one. The first was a beast but unfortunately lost at sea. The second ultimately had a timing issue. It was off by 1 mm - enough to make it impossible to keep consistently working. I nearly gave up on it, but figured it out after years of trying. I’ve since upgraded the machine with a variable speed motor and heavy wheel and I’m in love again. Now I’m looking to replace my very basic Janome domestic with a Bernina.

I switched mine to stitch length 4 setting and found I have better control of the stitching and going around curves. I use both Industrial and domestic machines and still learning my Juki machine too. I back tack the first couple of stitches when I start to hold the thread.

Add a needle positioner to the machine so you always start and stop with the needle down - or up, it’s whatever you choose. Right now I’m one more broken thread from lobbing my 1541s into the woods and never looking at it again. The only thing that’s stopping me is I can’t lift it ;-)

Make sure your needle isn’t skewed. It needs to have the grove to a specific side. When I put in my needles I put something through the hole to make sure it’s lined up perfectly perpendicular to the way it sews.

I have the same machine and I ❤ it! You can definitely sew lighter material you just need to have the right needle’& thread. I also have Juki TL 2200 QVP mini that sew on as well. It does take practice using an industrial but I promise it is worth it and don’t be afraid to back stitch😅

So happy things worked out! Love the bag it’s very cute. I don’t own an industrial yet but I use one everyday at my work, it’s a Juki LU-562 and love it to death. At times my thread breaks from the needle also but it’s either one of like a few issues either the needle has a burr at the end, the needle is slightly not in right or the main reason mine gets messed up is cause the timing gets thrown off from all the vibrations. But I’ve been using the machine for over 7 years now so I can tell just by the way it sounds what’s wrong with it. I do hope one day I can own an industrial as all I use now to sew on is my Singer Heavy Duty machine lol. And really it’s not always both strings you have to hold it’s mainly the top thread as that’s what will get sucked up into the bottom and cause the machine to jam up so just make sure you hold the top thread really good. I use real leather and bison along with waxed canvas at my work and there’s still days I get nervous stitching on it. But keep up the good work!

So glad you’re getting on the beast! I also have the Juki 1541s. My advice: use the knee lift to raise the presser foot, feels weird at first, but soooo much easier! I press the two threads against the machine with my finger and let go after a couple of stitches. Much easier than grabbing them. Also, once I learned to put my whole foot on instead of my toes, I found I have much better control and can even go one stitch at a time! (I only have the regular servo motor). Use it a little every day and you’ll feel comfortable in no time!

Using hemostats to hold the fabric/material on the curves works great! I have 3 pair so that I can kind of play “leap frog” with them to hold and direct my project when stitching those curves.

Good for you!! Industrial machines are tricky and if you use them for any length of time you have to learn the proper tension needle thread ratio and how to reset the timing! I do harness repairs at the racetrack and love to sew leather festival hip bags. I also use a portable industrial machine at home to sew horse blankets etc. I use a Consew and an Atler huge leather machine for the real heavy stuff. I love them however they can be finicky! Holding the threads to start is a must. My Atler will just suck the thread right out of the needle. Doesn’t usually jam but frustrating. The Alter will sew just about anything you put under it and it goes slow and steady. The Consew goes like a race car! Mine hesitates at the start then goes like hell! I think I may need a new motor. Very aggravating lol definitely a learning curve to use them. Love your videos and hope you have a great time at Disney!!

Jess, I got 2 LED shop lights from Costco for under $25 each. They are 44” long with two tubes, and can be either attached directly to the ceiling, or suspended by included chains. They provide a massive improvement in my lighting. Being a little older I just can’t work in low light. They are not beautiful but the light they provide is. Alternatively T5 fluorescent fixtures will work very well, I don’t have a price guess because the ones I have are in my green house, and larger. I expect they are similar in price.

For lowering the speed there's a couple of options, but one of the easiest is to buy a smaller motor pulley. With the default size you're probably getting a minimum of around 200 stitches per minute, but with only a smaller pulley you should be able to get down to 150 or 100. The 2-pulley speed reducers can sometimes interfere with the needle positioner if you have one of those installed, because they slow it down so much that the motor controller gets confused, but a smaller pulley should be fine. When installing the needle, it's actually more forgiving of misalignment then you might first assume. You can just eyeball it and as long as you don't mix up the scarf side and the groove side it'll probably work. For more accurate installation, though, you can use a second needle or a pin or something similar and stick it into the eye of the needle that you're installing and use that for aligning it. When you're sewing in the middle of the panel, you can leave the bottom thread alone and only hold the top thread. The chances of getting a jam or tangle when you're not holding the bottom thread is pretty low, especially if there's a reasonably long tail. When you're pulling the work out of the machine, make sure the handwheel is rotated so that the take-up lever is in the highest position. This will ensure that the top (needle) thread isn't wrapped around the bobbin or being held by the hook. Don't rock the handwheel back and forth as that can lead to the hook splitting the thread, or dropping it, or any of a number of rather unfortunate situations that can lead to the machine jamming. If your machine does jam, you can almost always clear it by removing the bobbin case, bobbin and basket. Check the manual for how to remove the basket. When you're doing precise top stitching around a corner, you can use the reverse lever to position the needle exactly where you want it to land on the last stitch while you're rotating the handwheel. This isn't necessarily a "do/don't" thing, but something you should consider trying is when you're sewing on a gusset/boxing panel, don't pre-clip/pre-pin the pieces in place. In theory it should be comforting to have everything in place before you start to sew, but in practice having everything already in a 3-dimensional shape can end up making the actual sewing harder rather than easier. Just feed in the fabric so that the next few inches in front of the presser foot are lined up, and let the rest of the material just do whatever it wants to do until you get to it. It's not an advanced technique for people who have decades of experience, it's actually a genuinely easier way to sew. The fancy thread device is usually called a "thread zapper". It's a tiny little heated wire thing that melts the thread. I can really tell you've come a long way with this sewing machine. The more comfortable you get with it, the more you'll make peace with it being just another sewing machine, nothing special or peculiar.

I have the same machine and have used it for years for my canvas business. about the needle....there should be a groove in the needle; position that groove to the left as you sit at the machine. I run my fingernail down it and hold it in place, adjust the set screw that holds the needle in place while making sure the needle does not turn (keep your fingernail in the groove to keep it steady) if it turns it will mess up your stitch. after it is in and tight double check the groove is directly to the left before threading. I hope this makes sense good luck; you will grow to really love it and will be turning up your speed on that Servo motor before you know it!

Replay crew. So glad you are not giving up on your 1541. When you start your stitch start with the needle in the down position and this prevents the thread being pulled down and locking it up. Throat plates with seam measurements can be bought at Sloan Machinery.

I am so happy for you to be able to sew the whole tote bag- which looks really cool. I am thinking about a semi-industrial or heavy duty machine because my domestic does not like bulky materials. I sew in my living room (I have a small apartment), so there is no room for a permanent desk. Your lighting looks like a light-sabre. lol I keep persevering because I would like to become a better sewist like you.. so it's good when I see how honest you are with your challenges. I laugh when you say in your tutorials that you have a seam ripper to create holes (for zipper pocket or post openings) whereas I constantly need to use the seam ripper to rip out my seams! I was having the same problem with my Seiko walking foot and in the end I got the service bloke out and he said it wasn't set up properly, he also said the timing was out so only the service person can fix it. I'm new to industrial machines too. I now want a cylinder arm.

I also recommend using a leader and an ender (double layers of scrap material) when getting to know your industrial. That way you can hold the leader or ender instead of trying to hold those treads! Just forward stitch about an inch and backstitch a few and BOOM much easier to hold.

I was frustrated beyond belief with it and could not understand how anyone could use an industrial. It was a constant jamming, threading, tension issue. I finally sent it back and got another one. Oh, my, gosh what a difference, night and day. I am soooo in love with the new one.

Jess, I have a Yamata 1541S a clone of the Juki and I love her. Now, it was not a love match at first. My fear of the tension adjustments about did me in but I was determined to win! Also, my "Berta" for some reason does not like polyester so I only use bonded nylon. She is a babe! Good luck and keep on trying....

Jess, I’ve been where you’ve been. I notice if I don’t use my industrial machine for a while, I’ll forget how to use it. I have a computerized industrial machine that I love, Juki FMS9000C. My backstitching, speed, stitch length, etc is all computerized. I use this machine for most of my sewing and only use my domestic machine, Pfaff Smarter 260c, for button holes or mending if I need to use a different color thread. I got to the point where my domestic was too slow. I’m still no where near the top speed of the industrial but I can still run it faster. I’d say, try to use it more and you’ll get used to it and come to learn it more. The breaks will have you starting over each time which is no fun

I bought the same machine last year after I saw you had one. My thread will break sometimes too. I found that you have to use the heavier count thread like 85 ish and higher. Also, sometimes the thread gets stuck in the little hole in the arm that you run it through in the thread stand up top. Which will cause it to break.

I've had a Juki DU1181n for 4 years. I had a bad cone of thread--it kept breaking. I think I bought that thread on Amazon. SiahSwag's and Wawak's thread have been excellent. If you got the marked needleplate from Juki Junkies, it might be problematic. I bought one there and it was an aftermarket part that wasn't exactly the right size for my 1181n. I bought one from Sewing Gold (original Juki OEM that he has engraved) and haven't had an issue since. Feel for burs on your bobbin case, or anywhere in the thread path. That can cause thread breakage. So can incorrect threading/bobbin winding. I'd change your needle, it could also be the culprit. Once you get over your fear of your machine, you will LOVE it. If I can sew on my 1181n, that's my go-to. Because it doesn't love thinner weight fabrics, I also have a vintage Singer 201 and Kenmore 158-17600, a newer BabyLock which is frankly a disappointment compared to a vintage tank. I have a seldom used Consew cylinder arm. Each had its own learning curve. It's really easy to stick with what you know, but challenge yourself to grow, girl. You've got this.

Def get yourself some leaders and enders ( I just use scraps of my quilt cloth cut into small squares) for your starting and stopping, saves so much time holding onto threads. I just snip as I go. Also for your needle, for my industrial I used to struggle with that very thing, I tried a toothpick in the eye to help straighten, a needle you name it. Then on one of my long arming channels someone suggest these teeny tiny magnets. Oh my what a game changer. It's a tiny magnet that will sit on the flat of the needle right by the eye. It lets you 'see' where it's pointed so you get it straight every single time. There is def a huge difference going from a Bernina computerized machine to a mechanical industrial but you'll become friends in no time :)

Instead of using the presser foot lift, you should use the knee lift. The lever could actually break if you use that lever instead of the knee lift on a regular basis. Saw it happen to someone. Also, if you keep your industrial next to your domestic, you can use them together to stitch up a bag. Mine are right next to each other so I can go back and forth sewing up the same bag with both machines. Actually three because I have a cylinder arm as well. Just a thought. Love my industrial but I still use the domestic just as much.

If my bobbin is getting low on my 1541s it sometimes locks up. Also, shredding thread it may be sticky needle or a new needle. I love mine. But understand your frustration. It was a learning curve. Mine is named Sophie.

Get a needle positioner and then you set it to the needle down position. Highly recommend!

Hi Jess you are so honest thank you. I wonder if you need an 'industrial coach" someone who already uses the same machine because it sounds more like a confidence thing tbh. New things are hard give yourself some grace and baby steps. After the session write down 3 things that went well and something to remember for next time. Interesting - I have a Janome 1541S - supposedly an Industrial also, but it doesn't look like yours. I haven't tried working on it yet. It was my co-worker's mom's machine.

I've recently found your channel and am enjoying watching your videos. I'm trying to work up the courage to make my own bag. I'm an amateur quilter and am familiar with using 100% cotton for quilting. You often use the word, quill cotton. Is this the same thing I quilt with? I would love to see a video from you that is just informational with examples of all the types of supplies you use. Different types of fabrics, accessories you use in bag making, threads, tools you might need, and such. Finally, what would be the first bag you'd recommend for a pretty beginner sewist and quilter to try their hand at the craft. Thanks!

I’m new to bag making (not new to sewing), and I recently bought a Juki 1541S and I’m in LOVE with it. Funny, I call mine “Beastie” as well. I’m thrilled that you are giving it another chance with much success! The bag looks great! I would love to see more videos using the industrial. I’m wondering, what accessories you are planning to get? I did purchase mine with the Servo motor, speed reducer, and needle position control (though it was set to stop in the up position, and I thought I wanted it to be in the down position. I have no idea how to change it, and after a couple of months, I’ve learned to use the hand wheel every time I stop, so now I’m planning to just leave it) 😂 other than that, I did purchase the same plate with the 1/8” increments and the zipper feet, and I’ve also ordered the narrow foot which will arrive soon. I’m hoping that I can use the narrow foot without having to change it out. Thanks again for sharing your experience and talents! ❤

Great job! It will get easier and easier the more you use it. It took me quite a while to become friends with my industrial. You'll get there, just keep using it. Just wondering how you calculated the length of the gusset for your tote? Is there a formula you use?? Keep up the good work, you got this!

When I change my needle i stick a straight pin in the whole of my sewing needle. That way I can adjust my needles position.
