I loved your song. My great grandfather Joseph Pettit was a conductor on one of those trains. He was one who helped those that wanted to leave get to safety He went back for more but was killed in the avalanche. I have his pocket watch they found on him. I never got to meet the man they called a hero. Your song kinda brought me closer to him. Thank you for the jump back in history.

I just read The White Cascade by Gary Krist, and your great-grandfather is featured throughout the book. He was a hero and went above and beyond to help the stranded passengers. He could have stayed in Scenic but decided to go back up because he had promised his passengers that he would be back to assite them. Unfortunately he lost his life on the treacherous hike back up to the site. I read that he had five children in Everett, and is buried in Evergreen Cemetry. How wonderful that you have his pocket watch. Are you aware that there is a Museum in Skykomish that is open at the weekends? There is an exhibit of the Wellington Disaster on display there. Hope you get to see it.

Love hiking through the site! On the 100 year anniversary down to the minute I took my daughters to scenic where some survivors and corpses were brought. The actual site was snowed in. We burned candles and counted down to the minute, sad story but history right at our back door.
