Context is everything. It's hip hop, it's sport, it's competition. He didn't need to apologize for sparring with Kendrick. But I understand that's not what he was apologizing for, he was apologizing for what he said. His heart wasn't in the track and you could tell.

Okay, I'm glad he's willing to apologize to *someone*, but I do wonder if he has an apology for the trans community directly? Also, I'm seeing a lot of people saying "it's a diss track, it's supposed to be mean" you know you can insult someone without dragging in marginalized communities, right? Not to mention that we need to get past the idea that simply "being trans" is some kind of insult.

The list of folks owed an apology just keeps growing. Not only was there no understanding of how those lines were hurtful to trans & intersex folks, women in his industry, *anyone who has ever menstruated*, black cis women in particular, etc etc… now he’s adding disabled and mobility impaired people to the list by calling his behavior “lame”. I’ve had former friends give me the same excuse: I was under social pressure, I didn’t really want to do it, but I freaked out and did the bad thing anyway. I threw you under the bus for my own glory… you get it, you can forgive me, right? And then it just kept happening and happening and happening.

He apologized to Kendrick Lamar because he actually respects him, but he did not apologize to the trans community because he does not respect the trans community. Men in this industry aren't going to apologize for their misogyny, regardless of if it is trans flavored or not. Arguably it's even more misogynistic that he apologizes to the guy, because he's like wow, it was so unnecessarily hurtful for me to compare this upstanding MAN with the much inferior view I have on any femininity. That grace and empathy certainly exists in him, but it is very selective.

Unfortunately for all the people who are asking for his apology to trans people, I doubt it’s coming anytime soon, his focus was on Kendrick, and everyone in his circle and his fan-base and the general hip hop community was talking about how he would address Kendrick. A lot of the queerphobia in hip hop just isn’t gunna be identified or regulated, and that is unfortunate. The only things that were off limits in a rap battle were racism and maybe a loved one's death. Everything else was a weapon in a diss record. Why is it a diss? He said Bitch many times, should he also apologize to all women & female dogs around the world for using a derogatory term.... maybe but the sounds ridiculous right? Let me put it like this. I called John a "fat ass"and decided to apologize why would I apologize to all the Obese people around the world.... I apologize to the people I was talking to. You focus on one single line. J Cole is apologizing for the entire song and saying that the whole thing was wrong. Straight up said the response didnt sit write in his heart & spirit. That his actions weighing on him. You can't get much more of a sincere in authentic apology. "Then here you come along like, but what about?" I get that the trans community is bothered but his diss wasnt exactly transphobia as much as it was "rap-diss-rhetoric". This doesn't make it sound better if it bothers you but i hope it explains it. To the traditional rap community, men have always called their foes "feminine", "female", b-word, referred to them having "that time of the month", etc and any other way they could immaculate the foe with words. ITS THE NATURE OF THE RAP-DISS GAME... I don’t think they're transphobic because the intent is to make your male foe feel less masculine, not to disparage women or transpeople... and I honestly dont think it will ever change. *personal opinion, its lame but I'm 43 so I i understand the roots.

That's true, and I'm not dissing the history, but it was misogynistic, bc our culture was more misogynistic. a lot of new rappers are going away from that, bc if you're good, you don't need to drag women or trans ppl into it. Femininity isn't bad and it's cringe to think calling someone feminine is a diss, especially now. I would look into FD. Singnifiers stuff, he talks a lot abt how rap has evolved, as someone who grew up w it in the 80s and 90s. I say this as someone who loves hip hop, rap is kinda dying, and it will keep dying if it doesn't evolve bc most younger ppl aren't with the misogynistic or homophobic stuff, or calling a man feminine as a diss. Like if theres nothing else you can think of, youre not very good imo. There's a lot more openly queer ppl and women in the rap game now, and they want rap to be a place for their communities too.

That’s what I’m thinking too. I understand how people feel today, however I also understand the history of rap and the culture (not just ethnicity, but socioeconomics as well) from which it came, and trans simply wasn’t a part of that in a positive light. Not to say they didn’t exist back then-they just weren’t an integral piece of this genre, just like women weren’t. All and all, people need to divest from it, not try to sanitize it. It’s in its own world, and the rest of the world has never truly been a part of it, just marveled at it. It’s also not something that’s ever really needed ‘funding’ like other music genres. Because truthfully, people who really enjoy rap as art don’t listen to commercial rap-they prefer underground. They don’t want the trendy ‘bubblegum rap’ that appeals to the masses. So if it ‘dies’ in the public, then it ‘dies’, but it’s not changing who invests in it.

@@user-mr2le3tu1f I never said women weren’t a part of hip-hop culture, and women were very much an integral piece of hip hop. Rap and hip hop are not synonymous/interchangeable. First off, he has nothing to really apologize for. The trans bar was a mistake sure, but listen, every-time someone makes a big deal over some racist, homophobic stuff, it only solidifies the opposition. I mean do what you want and fight how you must because I’ve done the same in my life for causes I’ve believed in, but I also know that “doing too much” gains you a swift backlash. You can be conscious and not agree with every nuanced take ya know? Internal biases are something we all share and yeah, it feels bad when comments are made for a mass audience, but I dunno man, I personally don’t see the fire for a trans bar just like I don’t take offense to Ramirez or Maddrox using slurs or whatever. I think we need to look at Rap and understand that change is coming, albeit slowly. Why give haters another talking point when it’s not needed? I’m sure he realizes the bar wasn’t okay, but to make that bar in the first place means that maybe he holds some type of way towards that community (which is still largely acceptable in the black community) and the condemnation won’t go far enough (as people talk about in this post). As a non-trans cis male, I don’t get the issue of his lyrics and people overblowing them, but I guess I’ve forgotten what it’s like to so recently have a voice. I dunno if I’d seek to demand apologies from someone who spiritually doesn’t align with me, but you do you, hopefully you get it and be grateful and not come at him for it being “weak” or “halfhearted” because like.. he wrote that bar right? You know how he feels and it may just be easier to nod and move on. Be disappointed sure, but.. I dunno, I’m not qualified for this conversation and I accept whatever criticisms follow.

I’m nonbinary and cannot grasp how Cole disrespected the Trans community. Like when I hear the bars people are talking about, to my ear he’s talking about a specific trans person, as opposed to disrespecting an entire community. Am I understanding that right? If someone could respectfully enlighten me as to their perspective of it specifically I’d greatly appreciate that 🙏🏽 As far as apologizing to KDot- I see this as a chess move too. Now the best thing Kendrick could do is Nothing. If KDot does nothing people gon say Coke conceded, if KDot comes back w something though then it HAS to be disrespectful. And the next step of this beef is to get REAL disrespectful either way which is why Cole would try to lower tensions prior. If Dot comes back w Heavy Disrespect, I feel like Coke would actually allow himself to let loose fr. Both parties held back they true power lyrically speaking
