Comfort Eagle(title track) has got to be one of the coolest tunes I have ever heard. Lyrics are also really clever 👏

Their second album, "Fashion Nugget" is great, and I absolutely love "It's Coming Down" from there. Also "The Distance" from there is amazing.

I've been following these guys since before their first album. It's wonderful to share your reactions. Most people don't listen to all the intricacies. At the same time they have great hooks to have pop success. I have known John since he was about 10.

They just played live in Des Moines. Didn't get to see them, live outdoors. I find a new favorite song every album.

Commissioning a Shyphony In C sounds a bit like a Grandaddy song now that I look back.

And so I got treated to finally listen to a full-length Cake album 😁 Great review/discussion/listening party! The recognition moment on "Short Skirt, Long Jacket" - priceless.

The Opera Singer also has a more personal meaning of John being famous to this scale. It describes his role in the role of famous singer and composer.

Cake and Ween do have shared fans indeed. My only complaint with Cake from album to album is that their songs sound a lot alike... constantly. With little to no variance tonally. And this from someone that's been on the Cake bandwagon since Rock 'n Roll Lifestyle was played constantly on 93.7 The Edge in Minnesota back in 94.

Rubbish. Everything from rap to country and western to pop to covers. Crap comment. Get some ears .... Or some taste.

Though I enjoy Cake, I think their biggest hits feature the qualities that most annoy me about them, and it’s the deeper cuts that have kept me coming back well into adulthood. If you subtract the huge hits they seem a lot less like a novelty band. They do have a few gems among their less popular singles, and I hope to see you guys get to them on some other albums. Prolonging the Magic and Fashion Nugget are really fun records.

You guys should listen to Brownout presents Brown Sabbath, great take on Black Sabbath. They are a latin-funk band from Austin - lots of horns and cool percussions. If you wanted a shorter version, watch their video here on KZbin live at KEXP in Seattle.

Have you guys done Phish’s “You Enjoy Myself? Their version on their live album, A live One is by far the best vocal jam.

The peak of Cakes fame would be 1996-1998. You'd know The Distance more than likely if you knew any Cake. Or maybe Rock n' Roll Lifestyle. It's odd that they've started you out near the end of Cakes fame and not at the beginning. This album was 10 years after their peak fame. Cake got less poppy and overall better after their fame started fading.

10 years? If their peak ended in 98 then this was 3 years later.
