I am a 63 year old Englishman. Lived 20 years here in Wales. I had the pleasure of attending a Welsh international at Cardiff last year. When the Welsh national was sung, i had a lump in my throat, a tear in my eye and the hairs standing up on the back of my neck. Nobody else in the world comes anywhere near the Welsh at singing. Wonderful. Awesome.

I am a 67 year old Englishman but I simply cannot ever watch and listen to this anthem without tears flooding down my cheeks. I have no welsh ancestry, no welsh relations and the nearest I ever came to being near the welsh was standing side by side with striking miners in the 1980's and laying tarmac at Cardiff Airport as a job of work. If anyone know's why the tears just come, please tell me?

Thank you for listening to our national anthem. Mae Hen wlad fy Nhadau ( pronounced M-aye Heh-n Oo-lard vuh Nn-had-aye) means Land of My Fathers. It bestows the pride the Welsh have in their language, culture and country. You can look up the English translation to get the gist but it loses its depth, poetry and meaning when translated into English. Many Welsh words have a deeper, poetic meaning than their English counterparts and there is often no direct translation into English. The Welsh Language is an ancient language, very much older than English. Sorry for the lecture but thought it may help to understand the anthem. Thank you again

Welsh here, I seen a documentary of sorts. Apparently in like early 1900s Wales, Ireland and Scotland song writers came up with these songs and were adopted as our national anthems. And apperently no one from England did (maybe because the Queen or king now our your actually queen and king) we respect them in Wales but was queen of England and be king of England. Not Wales, not Scotland or Ireland. I mean Wales ain't even represented in national or UK flag.

English is my 2nd language. Around 20% of the population are fluent and are bilingual, Welsh is taught in ALL schools so even the other 80% can speak a little and understand the basics. The English have tried for centuries to stop us, but we won't let them beat us.

sadly, many were stopped, my late Mother for one. She would turn 99 at the end of August had she lived...she made 79. She was born and brought up in Merthyr Tydfil South Wales. Preschool she spoke Welsh in the family. However, on going to school, the authorities wanted to stamp it out.. So this was, in her case, around 1929/30. One day she lapsed into Welsh speaking, after all, her native language and was roundly bit for it across her hands with a ruler. Her Father, A WWI decorated veteran was outrages and went down the school but was told the policy was no Welsh to be spoken.. they were ethnically cleansing the language. I was born and bred in England but have strong family links and am in daily touch almost with my cousins and one remaining uncle. None of my Mother's younger siblings spoke Welsh, even the old people, she said, her grandparents, stopped routinely speaking it in front of the little ones as teachers caned and smacked them for it. She did recall her Grannie, lol, and her friends, sitting around kitchen tables when she was little discussing things and whenever they got to a 'juicy' topic.. say someone's husband a drinker.. or violent.. or a baby out of wedlock, deemed highly unsuitable for the ears of the young they would discuss it in Welsh..by then none of the children could speak it. I get upset thinking about how those babies were physically punished, for speaking their native language, as if it were second class. Awful. I also recall the push to bring back the language in all schools.. the change of road signs and signs of official bodies and buildings being also in Welsh and wasn;t there a requirement for police etc. to speak Welsh as well as English?. It took a big concerted effort. One of my cousins daughters is an accomplished academic.. she has a Doctorate and she did Welsh Studies, Welsh language and I think French at one of the most prestigious colleges at Oxford. i think her fluency and academic study of the language and culture has closed the circle of what happened to her Grandfather's generation. My Mothers older brother, born in 1920, sent his son in the 60s to an all Welsh speaking school. All his lessons were taught in the language. He has thrived and has held many good positions in big institutions and organisations in Wales. to think those two peoples' grandparents were hit by teachers for speaking it.

And just to let you know my parents and their friends and neighbours communicate 100% in the Welsh language, they watch only Welsh language TV and only occassionally speak English when required. "speaking that barbaric language", that is, for speaking Welsh. The English tried very hard to eradicate the Welsh language, but after 400 years, it and the Welsh are still here.

Da iawn Diolch. I have just found your video and as always, it brought me to tears. I wa born in England (Solihull) but we moved to North Wales (Llandudno) when I was 4yrs old. A fair number of my friends in those early years, spoke Welsh, so i got a good familiarity with Welsh before starting School (Bodafon Primary), where most of the kids from Penrhynside spoke Welsh (having learned it from their Grandparents / Parents). We were taught Welsh in School (which became Mandatory a few years after I left. My Youngest Sister speaks Reasonable Welsh too. I am Welsh to the very Core and having worked in Several Countries around the world, managed to find a Welsh contingent in Taiwan and Shanghai. When I moved to Dresden, Germany in 2000 for work, I discovered I was actually the second Welshman named Martin in Dresden. My Eldest Daughter speaks Welsh with reasonable fluency and my Younger Daughter (who was born in Dresden, {where my Gt Grandmother was born also} has good pronunciation) but I never pushed her to learn Welsh as she had three Languages growing up, English from me, Mandarin from her Mum and German from School but she could pick up Welsh pretty quickly if / when she wants to.

As a descendent of a Welsh family by playing the national anthem of Wales you have done us proud. The pronunciation of the name of the song is My Hen Ulad ve Nadeye. Wlad is a declaration of Gwlad and is pronounced Lad and the title means The Land of my fathers. The language is a derivation of Brithonic or the Celtic language spoken in Britain before the Saxons arrived.

When we are at our best it's only the very best teams at the time that can stand up to the team and more importantly the anthem, America could learn a thing or two from countries like mine (Wales) Ireland and Scotland, our anthem are not just songs but part of who we are as people

Rugby forwards often put vaseline on their ears so that they don't get damaged when the scrum packs down and engages. Mae hen wlad fy nhadau = The old country of my fathers (approx pronunciation) My heyn oolad vuh hnad-eye O bydded i'r heniaith barhau = Oh may the old language live on (continue) (approx. pronunciation) O buth-ed ee'rr heyn-ee-eye-th barr-high

About 30% of the population of Wales can speak Welsh and about 15% speak it as a first language. Which is (roughly) 900k and 450k respectively. It's the most spoken Celtic language.

that's not the worst butchering I've heard! lol. if you want to get an idea of the welsh language, and the survival of it which is next to the country who's language is literally dominating the world have a look at a video titled "about the welsh language" by the channel julingo.

Not many people know this, but Wales started the tradition of each country singing their national anthem before an international event way back in 1905. There is a much better version from a few years before in 2013, the atmosphere was electric and 78,000 of us nearly blew the roof off the stadium against the 'old enemy' - kzbin.info/www/bejne/d36XnnyijrB6b9U

My brain is always trying to decide whether to sing or cry. I’m not particularly ‘patriotic’ in my every day life but this song makes my heart feel funny.

I find the hand over the heart business very affected and pretentious. As well as many people have a strange Idea of where, the heart is situated, in the human body.

👍 the land of song. My skin always rises when I listen to it, but I’m bias 👍 welsh is the only language that’s coming back year on year, unfortunately Scotland and Ireland’s langue is almost extinct, and the Irish language is soft I spoke to my nigh our in Scottish, and he didn’t even know that, so sad, the welsh language by the English crown government tried to stamp out the language calling it a dirty language when the children grew up late to early 19th century, and it started to decline, but there’s 5 distinctive different welsh languages, many more used to be from alley to valley or town to town, I like the welsh and English match don’t watch sport but every time I hear that sang, can’t help but have goose bumps and a tears in my eye. Thank you for covering it 👍🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

Fy nhadau is just my dads, but Welsh changes m to f, and also nasalises t to nh for 'my'. Ei dad - ee dad is literally the same in English, 'his dad'. As a Devonian/Cornishman I understand how this works.

Welsh is very very much alive here. From TV, film, radio, music, literature and theatre to a bilingual government, official documents, road signs etc. The education system has an extremely popular Welsh language option which provides schooling in Welsh from pre school to postgrad. In my inner city street in Cardiff about 50% are Welsh speaking including my neighbours. To paraphrase, rumours of our demise are greatly exaggerated! It is the normal language of everyday life for all of us.

As single "f" in Welsh sounds like an English "v". If you want the English "f" sound, it has to be "ff".
