MAGDEBURG: Criminologist on Taleb A. “A very atypical perpetrator” How sick was the driver?
The president of the Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA), Holger Münch, has described the attack on the Magdeburg Christmas market as completely atypical. The facts of the case and the manner in which the crime was committed appear to be similar to other such attacks, Münch said Saturday evening on ZDF's “heute journal.” However, there is a completely different motivation, he said. The culprit is atypical and does not fit into such a pattern, said Münch, referring to the suspect's anti-Islamic attitude.
Münch said that in November 2023, there had been a tip-off from Saudi Arabia about the suspect Taleb A., and proceedings had been initiated in this regard. The police in Saxony-Anhalt had then also carried out appropriate investigative measures. However, the reported comments had been “unspecific”. There had also been various contacts with authorities, insults, and occasional threats. “But he was not known for acts of violence.”
The BKA president said it must be examined whether the investigators as security authorities had missed anything. ”But again, we have a completely atypical pattern here. We now have to take our time to analyze this.”
A. is said to have driven a rental car through the crowds at the Magdeburg Christmas market on Friday evening. Five people were killed and more than 200 others were injured, dozens of them seriously.
