I think defensive team rating should only count for minutes the player is acually playing, not overall.

Awarding a successful team with individual awards simply because its a successful team is a sick and broken practice. The "on-the-court" differential is a much better metric. I.e.: the difference between the team defense ranking when a player is on the court vs when the player is off the court. 3 pretty good defensive players can make a top 5 defensive team. If one great player can make a bottom 10 defensive team into the top rated defensive team by his mere presence, that is a DPOY.. Gobert is great. Wemby is greater.

the spurs are losing on purpose, the Wolves made huge trades, had to wait a whole year for their plan to pay off, and they are now the 1st seed and 1st defense in the league, and you would hand the award that would be theirs to a last seed tanking team because their rookie averages big numbers ? that's disrespectful

I think if wemby was on a better team he would already be a top 15 player even top 10 in people's eyes. Next year i wouldn't be surprised if he's top 3 in MVP voting because he's legitimately getting better by the month. And he's already a 27/13/5/3 guy when he plays 35 minutes So next year im thinking he's going to get close to 30

6:00 that take on Rudy is really wrong. In Utah, he was trying to be a one-man defense a bit like Wemby and the Spurs. But in the Wolves he actually has a good defensive team, there are examples - well at least one I have in mind - of him guarding 1on1 with perimeter players and winning it! His lateral speed is for sure not as good as a guard but amongst the Big Huge Boys, he is one of the fastest. I still think the award should be based on individual performance though, Team Wemby here!

The Spurs are not actively tanking or sabotaging Wembys season. The team is just not great defensively without wemby or good shooting team. They have improved on defense. Theyre not missing shots on purpose or TOs on purpose. They bottomed out to get wemby and now are evaluating their recent draft picks. They haven't kept guys out for injury longer than needed. I just disagree that they are actively tanking. Theyre just not very good and need alot of talent upgrade. Edit: they said Spurs are trying to lose on purpose. How? They lost plenty of games with Wemby playing. Plenty of ROY don't make playoffs. LBJ Luka didn't make playoffs as rookies. Its nothing new or outrageous that is happening.

@@Peroriperora tre jones is not an all nba pg. Hes ok. A future solid back up pg. It was only for 20 games. That experiment ended in December. How were they trying to lose since then? The team was just bad and sochan at pg doesn't explain how they couldn't shoot, committed ridiculous turnovers, played horrible defense, and couldn't make smart decisions in close games.

It's called developing, not tanking. The Sochan thing wasn't an experiment. It's about developing his skills and understanding of the game while winning isn't important yet. They're doing it with Victor too. They'll run great plays through him and put the right pieces around him in 2026 when we've matured and picked up some more slick rookies. Then we're going to be dangerous!

This is a "Defensive PLAYER of the Year" award, not the "Defensive TEAM of the Year" award... Victor deserves this award, but if they don't give it to him this year he will be on a mission next year and I'm all for it.

The award is for defensive "PLAYER" of the year. Shouldn't have anything to do with the team or organization or anything else for that matter.

@@SIMON_SAYS_SOexept it has always been like that. Myles turner once averaged 4bph and was never in the DPOY talks. Yknow why? Because his team sucked. And so do the spurs. + explain how despite averaging more blocks and steals, wemby still has 1 lower def rating, is less dissuasive and gets scored on more than Gobert? All of that while having the worst record in his conference

@@fabtech0771 se we gonna ignore that wemby has not Anthony edwards, Mike conly, Kyle Anderson, McDaniels guarding the perimeter so that he doesen't get scored on so often and still finds a way to have a similar defensive rating of gobert?..... the guy on a bottom 3 team in the league has basically the same defensive rating as the "leader" ( gobert does not even have the best defensive rating in his team and not even the second best) of the Number 1 defense? are we serious rn? you right about Turner but Miles did jot have a defensive rating as high as the top 1 defense when he was on the floor

@@leonardo_mrllwemby get's scored on more, is less dissuasive, and has a worst defensive rating. His team is the 23rd ranked defense, and the 3rd worst team in the league by record. And that's intended. The spurs are TANKING. The wolves went through the the biggest trade of the start of the decade to get there. They went from play-in to number one seed in the West, and gobert is the main reason for that. They should get rewarded by receiving the award. The spurs are losing on purpose. You can't give the award to a team that is not trying to win

Isn’t that almost worse though? If you’re DPOY, at around 35pts, wouldn’t you say, “coach, let me try to stop this guy”??? Instead of just watching him torch your whole team?? And if Embiid scored 18 on Wemby directly, but 70 overall.. that means he put up Wemby’s ROY ppg average on him in like 7 min. or less.. There’s really no way to slice it to make 70pts better for any defender lol.. esp. not one playing the same position..

@gbmbg114 No, that's not worse. Yes, Embiid scored 70 pts, but he got 23 free throws in his usual flopping style, Wembanyama only played 28 minutes and ended up with 5 fouls (which is really not usual for him). Also, most of the time the coach decides who plays where and when, not the players themselves. So no, that's not worse in any way, shape or form.

Haters who dont want to give DPOY to wemby are literally reaching for answers that in the end dont make any sense, and they know it because they end up saying stuff like “IDK man, i just cant reward the Spurs.” um.. What? How again is that relevant to Wemby being better at defense overall than everybody else in the NBA? Plus, Spurs…man They just suck BUT are getting better. Beat Phoenix 3 times, took Milwaukee to the wire, beat NY last night. Stop giving lazy sports takes. Wemby = DPOY. Every thing else is cap.

@@bzhandle It doesn't really matter what it's called man. Only a couple times in history has a player won the award while playing for a team not having a top 5 defense. It's only happened a few times over the 30 or so years and the worst defense in the modern era to produce a DPOY were the 07 Nuggets with Marcus Camby, their defense was ranked 12th. The Spurs defense is ranked 22nd. He clearly is going to win multiple DPOY's why are people campaigning for him to win one against all precedent in his rookie season? It's insane levels of glazing for no reason.

nah, myles turner has averaged 4bpg, and nobody complained about it back then, because DEFENSE IS MORE THAN JUST BLOCKS AND STEALS

all stats point to wemby and the eye test points to wemby... the onmy thing holding him back are team record (sa clearly wants to tank and they go out their way to not put the best lineup around him) and that some players had career nights on him (joel , brunson , sengun) ... but at this point is like we are trying to find some ways not give him the award and not the other way around.... its like we have 99 signs that he is the best defender in the league but we trying to find something to criticize him and not guve him the award 💀

pop going out of his way to not put the best lineup around him Is clear and there are two examples of him doing this: the First Is that till december he was trying sochan as the point guard the second one Is that since people were calling him out he putted tre jones in the starting 5 but now has keldon Johnson coming off the bench and julian champanie being a starter.... (PS the starter lineup with keldon Johnson over julian has a + 19 net rating and a 96 defensive rating.... al other lineups have a slightly negative net rating)

Bro on the left talking about defensive rating yet not understanding how the stat works lmao. Defensive rating is better when it’s lower! It measures how many points a team scores on you per 100 possessions. So the fact that you keep mentioning that wemby has a higher defensive rating is actually an argument against him. Please if you are going to make these sorts of arguments do your homework please.

Remove Rudy and how far does the wolves D drop? Not much. Wemby is the difference between potentially top D on the floor and absolutely disaster of a defense when he is off... That alone should be enough

And to response to the narative (since you hate naratives) about Embiid, review your stat, he scores only 17 when Wemby was on the floor; the rest was score on Collins' face. Sick you did not paid attention to that when all our arguments where on point otherwise
