Wendell Pierce's New Orleans

In 2005, the country watched in horror as Hurricane Katrina ravaged New Orleans. As the levees broke and Lake Pontchartrain flooded the Ninth Ward, it seemed impossible that life in the Big Easy would ever be the same. For New Orleans native Wendell Pierce, whose family has called the city home for more than a hundred years, the storm was especially devastating. The star of HBO's "The Wire" and "Treme," Pierce wanted to contribute, through art and music, to rebuilding the city he loved. "The Wind in the Reeds: A Storm, A Play, and the City that Would Not Be Broken," is that story. Producer and playwright Shepsu Aakhu joins him for a conversation.

Wendell, this was heartbreaking to watch. I was in the Bush Administration during Katrina. I remember the utter frustration and exasperation with Louisiana’s Governor, who refused to allow Federal military aid after Katrina. We tried everything to find a way to help more quickly. I will say that the photo op from AF1 was because the President was concerned that with rescue efforts ongoing, the resources necessary for a Presidential visit would distract from ongoing search and rescue operations. I hope you have a chance to talk to President Bush about this some day. Katrina affected him, and all of us, deeply. I think your perspective will be very different. What happened to New Orleans was a tragedy.
