How humble would one have to be.. to not even sing lead in Your Own Group?? Wendy was a Supreme treasure.. and one of the greatest storytellers EVER. I still laugh out loud whenever I think of Coreen Cunningham! Any kid who grew up in the rural south, 'without means', could easily identify with that story.. we've all been there. Fantastic group... Beautiful man..

A few weeks ago I asked my mama about Wendy Bagwell and the Snake handling church, so, today God told me "hey, you can Google that..." The devil never saw "this" comin'" I googled "Wendy Bagwell" and was truly surprised to actually find this on "youtube".....Say what you want but "My GOD is AWESOME.. It is still the best story I ever heard.

Wendy's stories are classics! And, oh how I loved the way the Sunliters would laugh as though they were hearing it for the first time! They were so much fun to see and I saw them many times in concert during the 1960s and 70s. Thanks for the memories!

As a boy, I grew up just a couple miles North of Powell, Missouri (home of Albert E. Brumley). Every fall we had the Hill and Hollow Folk Festival there in Powell. During one of those festivals Wendy Bagwell and his group performed. As I listened to this video, I could still see him on that little stage out in the field telling the story. Thanks for sharing.

Interesting side note about this story. Down here in South Alabama, we have a world renowned Rattlesnake Rodeo. During the weeks before the Rodeo, we have a RSR beauty pageant. My father was, 9 times out of 10, the emcee. A number of times Wendy and the Sunliters came down and performed. One night, Wendy was telling this story on stage, and my father walked up behind the girls with a dead, stuffed rattlesnake and draped it over the shoulder of one of the girls, I can't remember which one, I think it was Jan, but needless to say.....none of the three of them stood still very long !

I remember a different version of this by him. Recorded live also. Don't remember where it was. Wish I could get it. Does anyone remember the story about going to Europe and eating in the French restaurant and one of the women ending up with snails then throwing up on the waiters fancy leather shoes? My daddy used to have an 8-track that we wore out listening to all stories, I have searched to find that same set of stories but with no luck, I especially want to find the story about the french restaurant. After hearing about the KY preacher dying from the snake bite, I too thought of the old 8-track my daddy had with the rattlesnake story on it, funny story, tragedy for the preacher, my prayers to his family.

I know this church, it is the Amburgey's between Booneville and Beattyville, Kentucky. The man he was talking about was Cash Amburgey.

Teresa S I’m from Harlan Ky, born and raised for 22 years of my life, I have never heard of this Kash Amburgey and I lived there half my life. I was raised in the Pentecostal Holiness churches there who still continue to practice serpent handling. Small world we live in. I now reside in Fort Payne Alabama.

Yes, we shouldn't judge, but not understanding something and finding a way to be joyful in the ignorance... well that's just being humorous and don't think this is meant to be mean spirited. Faith is faith and degrees of faith is sometimes just seeing envy of the faithful. I was in holiness church for years and there is a amazing show of faith and also miss use of the words.of God to put on a show. God knows His people and their hearts.

Lawrence Hernandez That was the story of when they went to a French Restaurant and couldn’t read the menu so the waiter recommended Escargots for I believe Geraldine. She ate them, loved them and when Wendy asked what they were, the waited said “ Madam had snails” she vomited and the Waiter said “Oh my, she Regurgitated” and Wendy said “Yeah, she regurgitated all over your Patton leather shoes” lol.
