The FIA regarded it as an international series, starting in 1971. All its champions were F1 drivers. Surtees McLaren, Hulme, Revson, Follmer, Donohue and Oliver.

the f1 car was closer than i expected. if i was guessing the f1 car would be faster somewhere like suzuka but monza would be all about the can am car
@stryker1797 Жыл бұрын
Suzuka still has a good bunch of very fast parts. Maybe the F1 car would gain advantage in the S section but that'd be it. Laguna Seca would be another story I think. Many med/low speed corners where aero would make the difference
@maza19 Жыл бұрын
To be fair back in 1972 a few tracks were slow and technical. Most circuits were fast with few corners. In Monaco F1 would be faster, maybe Nurburgring with all these corners but the rest would be an advantage for Can Am. Well, for Porsche at least. It was much faster than the rest of the field so I don't know if the average Can Am car would beat an F1 car

This is the most underrated championship ever. But i kinda appreciate the F1 car for keeping up with that CAN-AM.
@kpcart9 ай бұрын
Well you kinda a have to appreciate it as it cost probably 10 times the amount of money to produce and they called it self F1 and was sold to the public as the number one fastest and most prestigous series. You really should appreciate vintage can Am more than vintage F1 since it was faster quite often. Look up ferrari 712 can Am, a car faster than their F1 car in same era.

Watkins Glen USGP F1 vs Can Am comparison. 1969 USGP F1 Rindt Lotus 49 Ford 1.03.62; Can Am McLaren M8B 1.02.21. 1970 USGP F1 Ickx Ferrari 312 1.03.07; Can Am Hulme M8D 1.02.76. 1971 Different layouts. 1972 USGP F1 Stewart Tyrrell Ford 005 1:40.481; Can Am Revson M20 1.39.187. 1973 USGP F1 Peterson Lotus 72 -Ford 1:39.657; Can Am Donohue 917/30 TC 1.38.848. 1974 USGP F1 Reuteman Brabham Ford 1.38.978; Can Am Follmer Shadow DN4-Chevy 1.39.969. Can Am series ended after 1974 Road America race, which I missed as a 👦. But blessed to see 1969-1973 Road America Can Am races! 😄
@reallyluckyoaklawn83066 ай бұрын
Yes, sometimes. Can Am cars were faster, depending upon the track and year. Compare the lap times, when they raced at Mosport (Canadian GP) and Watkins Glen ( US GP) in the same year with the same layout. This is a historical fact. 1967 Mosport CA GP Clark Lotus 49 1.22.4; Can Am Hulme M6A 1.20.8. 1969 Mosport CA GP F1 Ickx Brabham-Ford 1.17.4; Can Am McLaren M8B 1.18.2. 1970 Mosport Can Am Gurney M8D 1.16.8. 1971 Mosport CA GP F1 Stewart Tyrrell-Ford 1.15.3; Can Am Stewart Lola T-260 1.17.3 (Jackie won his 2nd F1 World Championship, while doing a full season of the Can Am, winning 2 races and finishing 3rd in points. I miss multi series F1 drivers!). 1972 Mosport CA GP F1 Revson McLaren M19-Ford 1.13.3; Can Am Donohue Porsche 917/10 TC 1.14.2. 1973 Mosport CA GP F1 Peterson Lotus 72 Ford 1.13.69; Can Am Donohue 917/30 TC 1.14.1. At twisty Mont Tremblant, F1 was definitely faster. 1970 Mont Tremblant CA GP F1 Stewart Tyrrell-001 1.31.5; Can Am Gurnery M8D 1.33. Only talking the original Can Am. Not the wonderful 5.0L Can Am which had better racing, than the original. I will do the USGP later. 🙂

I'm pretty sure that the Group B cars in the late 80's weren't that much slower than the F1 cars of the time. Even in the 90's, while CART cars were certainly slower than F1 cars, they weren't differences of night and day like you see nowadays when comparing F1 cars against anything else.

Would like to see the comparison for Mt. Tremblant. Both F1 and Can-Am raced there. Very hilly, windy circuit. Sometimes referred to as the 'mini Nurburgring.'
@JReaLBiz86 Жыл бұрын
I think over a full fuel or tire stint, the F1 car would end up edging out the Can-Am. Eventually the downforce numbers for the F1 would preserve the tires well enough that it keeps more pace than the Can-Am. Power : Weight ratio doesn't matter when that power is upwards of 1200hp compared to 500hp, but there's only a 250kg difference between them lol And the Can-Am doesn't lack much in aero. But the higher center of gravity, as well as having to tiptoe all that power around, means the lighter, lower, higher-downforce formula car will end up with the edge in a full race. More forward bite for longer, and higher cornering speeds. The course could also make a difference. For instance, if they were at Monza, forget everything I just said, the Can-Am wins lol At least, that's my opinion.
