well, they did have one pak40 for every 2-3 km of front, so, yeah, that got the Russians dying of laughter. Romania would end up realizing they are way behind, and build towards the end of 1943 an excellent 75mm gun, but, as usual, it would be too little too late.

The situation even before Uranus starts is a perfect example that sending more and more troops to a battle is useless if you won't have the logistic to supply them. Romania was a little country compared to the "big guys" of this war, they just dont have the capability to give food, ammo and vehicles in the numbers required to such a big war. The germans also were on the limit of their supplies too so it was just a dream to give german equip to the romanians. The romanians even with this critical situation gave a very good fight but the catastrophe was inminent

In Germany"s defense, they made a movie in the 50's about Stalingrad where they show how the Romanians warned them about the impeding Soviet offensive and how the Germans were dismissive about this information( we were really good on 3 things: informations,close quarter fighting, and aerial warfare) We all know how that ended. On a more personal note, my grandfather escaped before the encirclement(he was stationed on Don's Bend, a location that gained mythical proportions in our family ),after he was wounded in a bombardment ( he lost his left eye and partially lost its hearing). After the war ended, he was employed as a guardian in a communist farm. The dude, a total beast, used to sleep on the field in temperatures well below the freezing point, and always had a bayonet under his bed, even in his 90's. The mofo died while sleeping. My grandpa was not a Nazi, was not a violent man, didn't hate Jews or gypsies( he hated Russians, his family was killed by Russian soldiers in 1917 or 1918), he was a peasant that did his job. Regarding the bad reputation received by us for losing at Stalingrad... Holland and Belgium, imperial powers, lasted 10 days in WW2, while we made to Caucasus.

It is very nice to see Armageddon staying active! The Battle for Berlin series are quite interesting, although I still have a long way to go. :) It is quite clear to me that the Rumanians were not responsible for the disaster in Operation Uranus: 1. The Wehrmacht could not even adequately arm and reinforce the Romanian 3rd and 4th Armies. This is like expecting a decent return on investment without first making adequate investment. Tsk, tsk, tsk ... 2. The Rumanian commanders were well aware of the dismal predicament they were in. They were not shy about pointing out their concerns to Weichs and other German higher-ups, but to no avail. Although, I should not be too harsh on Weichs and Paulus, considering how much these two were overstretched with next to no prospect of things getting better, meaning they would not have been able to provide much to the Rumanians even if they seriously wanted to. 3. By October 1942, the Wehrmacht was, for all practical purposes, behaved like a boxer in a late round. In other words, the German did not have much in the way of new operational-strategic ideas; just cling to the Don and Stalingrad and hope for the best. (When exhausted while danger is just under the horizon, people tend to comfort themselves by becoming a bit too optimistic.) That is, since the Red Army bled horrendously in both 1941 and 1942 all out of proportion compared to the Wehrmacht's losses, it would not have been a stretch for the German higher-ups to convince themselves that the Red Army would be too worn out to pull off a counteroffensive anytime soon. 4. The frontline was damn toooooo long! In particular, it is not going to be very fun to be a divisional commander with orders to defend 20km of front while he is also aware that there are Soviet tank corps lurking somewhere. Therefore, the German failure had a lot to do with not having enough force size and logistical support to achieve the objectives defined by Operation Blau. So, it was a strategic-level blunder, rather than tactical or operational.
@Armageddon41452 жыл бұрын
And Thank You for sharing another very accurate analysis! Yes it was a 100% strategic blunder. The fact is that Stalingrad was Hitler's last possible prize to justify the whole year's campaign. The Caucasus was already beyond his grasp, so it was the Volga or nothing. That and the blatant underestimation of the Red Army (in quantity AND in quality) led to this outcome. The Romanian were obviously the scapegoat.

The Romanians told the Germans that they did not have the weapons to resist the Russian, they were ignored.

Not even that ! The front was too long to cover, on the left and right of their formations, they did not have enough men physically. Even with better weapons it is doubtful that they could have held out much longer in those positions, without any naturally defensible positions. They asked for reserves (only some strong armored forces could have supported the defense against any tank attack there!), they got only dubious tank formations that could not stop the Soviet tanks at all. In addition, many soldiers had not been fed enough and had no winter clothes for weeks and even months! (they received nothing, no ammunition, all transport being monopolized by the Germans!).

The Romanians had a reputation for extreme cruelty in the treatment of civilians, rape, murder and pillage being de-rigour. I sincerely hope the Russian Federation support them in this aim.
@chaptermasterpedrokantor16232 жыл бұрын
@@petrosros I wouldn't call them fattened. They're one of the poorer nations of the EU, as they were of the Warsaw Pact. And hundreds of thousands of Romanians were captured and got to endure forced labor in Siberia, along with the Germans they went to war with. As for Hungary wanting Transylvania back, well, that border is a can of worms, but since they are both in NATO I doubt that the US will let them open that can of worms, just like the US always keeps a lid on that simmering conflict between Turkey and Greece. I fail to see what territorial claims Austria has though. The old Austrian Hungarian empire is long dead and dissolved. And also almost all of its former territory, except neutral Austria is now part of NATO. And even then Transylvania was a part of the Hungarian part of the Austrian Hungary empire, not the Austrian part.
@chaptermasterpedrokantor16232 жыл бұрын
@@julianshepherd2038 The importance of the Italian navy cannot be underestimated. Even sitting in port doing nothing, without the French navy to counter, as was the original plan of the Royal Navy, it now tied massive Royal Navy assets to the Mediterranean that could not be used elsewhere. The British East Indies Fleet, instead of being one of the main fleets as was planned before the war, now came last in priorities and force allocations after the Atlantic, the convoys to Russia and the Mediterranean. It was so weak for most of the war it had to hide in Africa in 1942, leaving most of the Indian Ocean to the Japanese until 1944. Which makes the Italian navy the most important contribution to the Axis that Italy made.
@chaptermasterpedrokantor16232 жыл бұрын
As with everything in life, preparation is the key and knowing where to strike. For almost 2 years the Red Army pissed away millions of men in poorly conducted, ill prepared and piss poor supported offensives. Uranus is probably the 1st time that the Red Army not rushed things but took its time to properly plan and prepare. And even then it was very fortunate that the German advance in the summer had overstretched their defensive lines. Unlike at Rhzev where the Wehrmacht basically occupied the same lines throughout all of 1942. Maybe the Red Army of 1944 could have attacked the Rhzev sailliant headon and win, but not the Red Army of 1942 which was still in the process of rebuilding and relearning its craft. Small wonder then that Mars failed miserably and Uranus succeeded beyond expectations.

Italy's military campaigns in Africa and Russia were 'less then stellar' shall we say. But they did contribute a lot of troops. Most of Yugoslavia and Greece were occupied by Italy and in 1943 the Germans not only had to disarm dozens of Italians divisions in the Balkans but also replace those divisions. With a lot of that gear and some Italian troops ending up with the Partisans. That was a major game change in the war in the Balkans. And the Italian navy, just by virtue of existing, just like the Tirpitz in Norway, tied up a large chunk of the Royal Navy in that theater that could not redeploy to where it was needed the most, in the Indian and Pacific Ocean. There's a reason why the Royal Navy only entered into the Pacific War in earnest in 1945.

Nicely balanced assessment with interesting new sources! Everything had to wait for the big, 'final' push in the Stalingrad sector... or did it? Well these flanks were thinned out at German discretion, on their watch. So the Stalingrad sector sucked in more and more German units, depleting and fatiguing them too... In the belief that Soviet resources were virtually expended, and that everything was in hand.... as per usual.

What i find interresting is that the Romanian troops weakend their own divisions to keep troops back in Romania incase of war with Hungary. Did they seriously think war with Hungary would be allowed at this point?
@AwayWithYouVileBeggar2 жыл бұрын
I mean Hitler pretty much encouraged this behaviour and made the Romanians and Hungarians compete for land (AKA Transilvania). The good: the Romanians and Hungarians advanced into Russia and did all they could to help the Germans even when they wouldn't gain anything from these conquered lands. The bad: well neither trusted each other anymore and they were fully prepared to kill each other for the land that Hitler promised both thus they couldn't fight alongside each other.

That is the reason that roumanians troops only recevid the hevy equipment from the germans on the front(equipment that the roumanian guverment already payd)..that is the reason for exemple that the 15 inf Divizion enter in combat in Stalingrad with no artilery.. Thank you for an interesting analysis. You seem to conclude that the Germans were responsible as they knew the weaknesses of the Romanians, yet I’d suggest it was a failure of aggressive action and intelligence at the army level of the 3rd and 4th Romanian that tactically resulted in the disaster. Certainly at the strategic level the German high command seemed to underestimate the Russian reserves, especially as the Kotluban offensives seemed to the Germans the ineffectiveness of Russian counteroffensives.

by november 1942 romania had secured ALLLLLL of its war aims against the Soviet Union and then some Bessarabia, Transnistria maybe a bit more in future peace. So soldiers felt their war was over! The staff and Antonescu were still indebted to Hitler however. For the Romanians the war was over we just had to get to the peace now! Soldiers were trying to survive to the peace not die on the way there as the war, if you looked at maps anyway, was pretty much won! For the Germans there was still ideological war against the Soviet Union and communism/jewry!

Romania's goal in that war was the annihilation of the Soviet threat to Romania... since the creation of the Soviet state, it continued aggressive actions against Romania, through attacks in the border area, raids by spies and instigators in Romania (mainly Jews, Ukrainians , hence the behavior towards them)... From 1919 to 1940, the Soviets behaved aggressively towards Romania, and not aggressively at the diplomatic level, just... It was who who, the sword had come out of its sheath, so that stopping on the Dniester was stupid, at that moment.

The Germans and the Soviet knew it both that armistice would not last. However the beginning of 1941 German intel warned of a rapid build up of forces on the border in Poland and Moldavia. With all of my respect I can say that doing these kind of videos isn't simple, I am proud to see that there are some people like you dedicating their time doing quality content and also detalied on a specific front. Romania overall had a weak armed force inferior to the Soviet one, we were outnumbered, unequipped, a bad supply line, most of our units weren't mechanized and they were still using horses, our anti-tank couldn't even destroy the new T-34 Soviet tank and Romania really needed German aid regarding equipment, units and supplies. There were desperate times in Romanian history, being a theater of war for the world super powers and being exploited. Romania never had wars of expansions we had defensive wars and we tried to do whatever it takes to fight for our nation.

@@Novac_Alexandru You are mistaken, or you are lying! Because: 1) Bessarabia (Moldova) this is not Romania (just like Slovakia is not the Czech Republic, although very similar!) 2) Odessa, actually a small Israel, is almost a full Jewish town in which there was no mass extermination of Jews and deportation to concentration camps during the war, because Odessa, along with the Northern Black Sea region, was supposed to be a colony of Romania according to Romania's agreement with Hitler, so there was a Romanian administration in Odessa during the war. This is the only positive fact of Romania's presence as an ally of Germany on the eastern front. Everything else was not positive. Alas! All of Hitler's allies on the eastern front were participants in the war to occupy foreign territory. In fact, during the war, every second soldier of Hitler on the eastern front was not a German by nationality! This is a fact of the statistics of prisoners taken by the Red Army. In fact, unlike the Western Front, almost all of Western and Central Europe was a participant in the invasion of USSR (under the general leadership of Hitler)... as another repetition of the ancient Northern Crusades of the "Onslaught on the East" ("Drang Nach Osten") 3) Today, Western propaganda is trying to blind the culprit of World War II exclusively in the image of two Hitler and Stalin, ignoring the fact that the war would not even have begun without: a) Anglo-American oil supplies to Hitler (the Anglo-American Shell and Standard Oil Consortium owned all Romanian oil production); b) As an analogue of the modern EU, the entire economy of Western and Central Europe worked for Hitler during World War II against the USSR until the summer of 1944

We collaborated with Germany, due that Romania was in a bad spot during that time, we lost major territories and our national integrity was in danger, so we wanted good relationship with Germany so we could have our national integrity secured from the Soviets that wanted even more territories that were owned by Romania including the snake islands.
