Brad Herrick, an ecologist and research program manager at the UW-Madison Arboretum, explains why earthworms dig out of the soil when it rains, and you see them littering the sidewalks.

Thank. You. So. Much. You just reinvigorated my passion for saving this beloved creature. As long as I am on gods green earth, I will NEVER let any worms get stuck on that dry, dry pavement. Hallelujah and god bless to all wormkind. Aworm.

Whenever it rains by me, I see tons of them all over the driveway. Once the rain stops I go out and try to pick up as many as I can and put them in areas of soil not sopping wet but areas with a bit of cover so the soil there is wet/damp. I hate seeing them dried up and dead or near death but stuck to the pavement and even by adding a little water the stuck parts won’t come off the pavement. The robins come around and get their share but usually seem to still prefer pulling them from the soil . Perhaps the robins quick movements are dangerous to it hitting the pavement with its beak. 🤷🏼‍♂️ But please, everyone, save the worms but be sure the birds get their share. ✌️❤️ 🪱 🐦

great video,i have a wormbin with plants and y feed the worms with kitchen scrap,the rain never gets to the wormbin and even so when its raining outside the worms come out to the surface

Whenever it rains and I see an earthworm on the sidewalk or cement, I pick it up and place it on soil. I figured its life is as important to it as mine is to me, and I’m sure it appreciates being placed back on “safe ground.” 🪱

I’ve been doing this lately as well and came to this video wondering if what I was doing was really helpful or not. I do have a ton of birds very active around my house all the time so I figure worst case the birds will be fed.

In other words, earthworms have an intense, but usually suppressed, instinctual desire to explore and travel. While fulfilling this desire is usually fatal for the individual, it benefits the species, and so continues.

I used to feed earth worms to my Oscars and convicts. But some escape and dig into the gravel. So when i cleaned the fish tank i found plenty of them in the under gravel filter 😂 i decided to call them aqua wurms 😂😂😂😂

OMG, I must’ve saved 30 worms today in my carport!!!!! Poor little things for some reason they wanna cross from the front yard into the carport, but they rarely make it out :(

I see a lot of worms just sticking 90% out of the lawn, extended onto the sidewalk. Just chilling out. Most zip back in when I look at them but many don’t. Are they stupid? What are the doing?

Often times when I pick one up and drop it in my little pond it will drown before the fish eat it. So maybe they can breathe in water... But not for very long?

I think this video oversimplifies the biology of the worms’ respiration. They breathe via absorbing oxygen through their skin, yes, but they have a delicate mucus membrane system that aids in the process, and that depends on a balance of moisture to work properly. Worm farmers know to keep their worm bins at a steady range of humidity, and if too wet, the worms start to sicken, get pale and skinny or even die.

Others have observed (as have I) that worms will drown if dropped in water. Also others that keep a worm farm bin (which is protected from rain) see that the worms move to the surface during rain. It’s known that they have a layer of mucus that is vital to processing the oxygen in their environment. Is it not possible that when they sense a change in barometric pressure or some other indicator of imminent rain, they know moisture levels will rise and change the chemistry of this mucus layer and alter their “breathing” effectiveness?
