I love the overall message of the show about how one's actions always have consequences, especially when it comes to other people. Putting it through the lens of video game aesthetics is perfect because a lot of us are at the age where it resonates. O’Malley said on Instagram that Old Scott is not Scott from the comics, the anime is its own thing and just another version were the events of the series happened. Scott Pilgrim always reflects O’Malley where he is in his life. He always admitted that he and Ramona was a self insert of him and then girlfriend turned wife. The books he wanted to finish it before he turned 30 because it wouldn’t feel the same since it was a story for people in their 20s. Seconds (which you should read) is about finding your place and moving on. Now the anime feels like someone who has grown up more been through different kinds of hardships. Like O’malley’s own divorce with his wife a while back.l

I feel like that "scott isn't the same as the comics" part is bs, mainly bc of two reasons: 1. Some people were hard hating on it, so maybe he felt it was backfiring and said "hey, lets pretend its not the same one, haha" 2. Its obvious it is, that Scott had the same-exact adventure as the comics one, plus its just a reflection of Bryan's past life, just like the comics did

Once I realized it was an extension of the comics, I really enjoyed the show. Focusing on Ramona and the Ex's was a great move. I do find it weird that the Twins got no screen time, when all the other Ex's got entire episodes. Hard agree as well that this show definitely feels like a post-divorce O'Malley revisiting his characters older and wiser. A couple of additional personal high points: - Envy's big Kill La Kill Kiryuin energy when she crashes the funeral. - Knives and Kim are in their video game outfits for the final episode (Knives' black outfit, scarf and red streak, Kim in her stripped black and white coat). Stephen and Wallace might be as well, its harder to see. - Playing the midboss music from the video game during the Old Scott fight.

I like the idea that the future Scott is the one from the movie specifically. In the book the story takes place over a year and over that time Scott really reconciles and tries to change rather than the movie where he kinda stays where he is except in the end for like 6 minutes and the story took place over two weeks. I love the idea that the reason it didn’t work out with Ramona for movie Scott in the future is because the whole story arc was too short so it didn’t sink in enough.

Another point that adds to this idea is the weapon of choice of the two different Scotts. In the comic, he uses the sword of empathy, going with the theme that he manages to learn how to look outside of himself and understand other people. On the other hand, movie Scott gets the sword of self-respect, namely, he's learned that he's right, and that all he really needs to do is double down on backing himself. One of these epiphanies is going to be more prone to the sorts of errors that Old Scott made than the other.

As someone who loved the comics growing up and the movie as well as game I was initially disappointed by the twist and it kept me invested and I’m so happy it did because it ended being a cool alternate universe/sequel to the story I love and it was awesome to see!

Never realized it but the title still works. Scott Pilgrim doesn't Take Off like a rocket ship, he leaves or "Takes Off"

I firmly believe that this show is enjoy fully if you read the comics, if you only watch the movie this may comes off as if only Ramona accepts her failures and Scott is only going along with everything. There are a lot of times, like when he apologies to Knives that left me asking: When did he learn this? If you read the comic you understand but only the anime will leave you confuse, or at least thats what I think.

NO! DON'T READ THE COMIC FIRST! I read the comic right before watching the anime and was devastated by the lack of depth and interaction between Ramona and Scott.
@kaidar12 Жыл бұрын
@@RailwayScholar I'm extremely confused. If you think the comics didn't have enough interaction between Scott and Ramona, why would you tell people not to read them first in favor of a show where they have much LESS interaction? Scott and Ramona only really interact in three episodes: an abridged retelling of book 1 with an alternate ending, the second half of the penultimate episode, and the finale. They barely spend any time together at all, since Scott is absent for five out of eight episodes. The anime makes your issue worse, unless it's being used to add depth and new interactions to a preexisting story.

@@RailwayScholar I read the comics when they were new & “Scott/Ramona got married, but Ramona remained essentially avoidant & Scott massively overreacted to relationship issues they had in their 30s” seems like a pretty realistic direction for them. I didn’t finish that story thinking that Scott/Ramona were perfect, but that they were going to try to work through their flaws together … and in this story, they are still doing that
@RailwayScholar Жыл бұрын
@@TheJadedJames Did you remember the moment when Ramona said she needed some time to herself and Scott was completely fine with it? In fact it was Ramona who ended up bailing on him. Why would he then freak out completely at Ramona requesting the same thing again AFTER they got married? Maybe you should reread the comic, cuz "when they were new" is a pretty long time ago.

I'd like to point out that Bryan Lee OMalley worked on this story. Like he wanted to expand the Scott Pilgrim cinematic universe with this show. I do agree its a little eyerolling and dragging a bit in the movie-set episodes. But i look at it as a love letter so the comic and movie. Its so much fun! Exciting! Satisfying! Not to mention it really fleshes out the characters a little more so you love them that much more. And also the Todd's gay awakening had me dying and not much makes me laugh. AND THE ANIMATION OMG ACK-

This was actually my first Scott Pilgrim experience and when I realized what it is meant to be, I kinda regretted not reading the comics or watching the movie beforehand. I know gist of the evil exes plot and I still thoroughly enjoyed the show but I feel like I would've appreciated it a lot more had I knew the whole picture of what it's based on and got to see the complete evolution of the characters.

I agree that the show was great. It gave all of the characters besides Scott a chance to breathe and develop on their own, and by the time of the epilogue it seems that pretty much everyone is much better off for it.

I think the marketing perfectly set up the twist, and anyone who goes in knowing what that twist is beforehand got robbed. The marketing being part of the setup is not a bait-and-switch and I don't at all feel "lied to".

I read the series as a teenager and really enjoyed the movie, but I think Takes Off is my favorite. I get being a little put off if you were expecting the original story retold, but at the same time, that's been done. The movie stuck (overall) pretty close to the source material, and I think another retelling wouldn't work as well today for some pretty obvious reasons. I love that this really felt like a continuation of the graphic novels. The vibes were perfect, and the new material helps further flesh out the characters and keeps it from getting stale.

Colouring your hair doesn't damage your hair, bleaching the roots as it grows does not either. Actually some colouring brands even do good to your hair. It gets fried if you bleach the same hair again and again, you can colour your hair for years every day and be healthy

in the animation, ramona *is* bleaching her hair every day (i do believe it is every day due to the other story bits, but it could be that some downtime isn't being shown.

@@rowanl3059it's literally clowned upon in the comic. People called him out on multiple occasions. They make it clear how much of a shitty person he's supposed to be. It's not flawed for being problematic.

even though ppl ignorantly throw out terms like 'grooming' with any age-gap relationship, i'll be the creep and point out that in the comics, it's very clear that scott is originally interested in knives genuinely prior to meeting ramona, and that they live in toronto (legal age of consent there is 16), if only because he's heartbroken by envy and wants a 'simple' relationship. also, his friends realistically DO chide scott -- 'male friends are concerned with how hot knives is' and envy the dynamic while female friends teasingly accuse him of being 'evil' and ask if he's being manipulative constantly. this is a very realistic depiction of how a friend group that's not sententious and performatively judgmental would react to a friend in that situation.

My only problem with this show is that it was advertised as an adaptaion and basically lied to market it to fans of the film and og books. This has happened before with Masters of the Universe where they played with peoples nostalgia. That being said this show is 100% fantastic but it just pissed people off for no reason and would've been so much better without the false advertising. I'd like to see both, a new angle of the story like they did here and an animated adaptation of the og story.

I like to think thing s would have been better with a 2 season story. Season 1 being the adaptation people want and then a surprise season 2 to continue the story proper.

Yup I was very confused when first watching all this but kinda expected the comic version cause I did read the first comic in High school when I stumbled upon it. But my school didn’t have a lot of comics or manga available at the time so I moved on continuing watching my anime I liked. I really love the art animation style and everything is so smooth and amazing I had to watch again to catch all the details. By the end of the series this remix of the comic turned out really good.

As someone who hasnt seen the movie, i appreciated the love the first episode gave to the series, but it was the hardest to get through. I love the idea of the series being an alternate take where one event is different, and seeing what would change. It also shows us who didnt watch the movie how the timeline has changed.

as someone who just discovered scott pilgrim comics at the beginning of the year and then watched the show latter, i really really liked the show i can say i liked it more than the comics, do flashy colors and cool action play a part of that? yeah.. but also it feels a lot like a love letter to the series and its characters in general! specially how it develops the other characters much more! and not just scott, honestly i really likes how the show was basically about ramona and the exes and the others than scott himself, while scott haves like 3 chapters of the show, bc if you want more scott content you have the movie or the comics! also i really feel like the show treated many of its characters way better than the comics or the movie ever did, like mathew pattel getting more screen time, roxie getting her feelings acknowledged and getting to leave at her own terms, knives getting to explore her interests and develop as a person outside of scott, etc, idk man it was great i really like the show! i still really like the comics too tho!! one cant really replace the other

The I don't think a faithful adaptation would have been a bad way to go at all. But I do appreciate what this show did differently, especially how it was tied back to the original story. Ultimately we got something that honored the story of the game/movie but was something fresh and new at the same time.

I was sceptical after the first Episode tbh. But I really liked it. The whole Scott Pilgrim thing was a big party of my late Teens, even read the Comics. But this felt real and like a sequel of sorts. Which makes sense, since the OG writer was the co lead or something

I remember watching the movie a couple times a really long time ago, long enough to completely forget 80% of it and enjoying it for being another funny movie with funny actors- then I met SP fans occasionally saying "the comic was better" and sharing panels from it. And me thinking the art was cool. Maybe if I had seen the movie a little later when I was more aware of my own geekiness I'd have understood the greatness of it.
