Werewolf: the Apocalypse - Introduction to the Lore

Werewolf: the Apocalypse was first released in 1992 and is the second game set in the World of Darkness. With a radical tonal shift from its sister-game, Vampire: the Masquerade, the players take on the personas of Gaia's warriors, equal parts spiritualists and monsters, who fight a desperate struggle to save the Earth from the talons of the wicked Wyrm, the great Destroyer, and its many followers.
In this introduction to the game, we learn some of the core concepts of Werewolf, but even more, how our own views of the loup garou differ from those of this particular story. And with a message that's never before been this relevant, I hope you'll enjoy diving into the war against the Wyrm with me.
For those curious, I will be doing bi-weekly videos for Werewolf alongside Vampire for the foreseeable future, although as usual I will dedicate two out of four weeks to covering a vampiric clan (Next up is Nosferatu).

Thanks to u/NotAWerewolfReally on Reddit for providing some very useful pointers! *My pronounciation of Metis is based on a google search and some videos; I was worried I'd be saying it wrong (I've always said Met-is in real life with my Swedish friends), so since Garou comes from Loup-Garou, I figured this term was a loanword as well. I can't say it's the proper pronunciation though. *The age a Metis has their first change has apparently changed between editions, as W20 states it's between 1 to the onset of Puberty", it was usually in the eight to nines before. *Silver doesn't hurt a werewolf when they're in their breed form (unless they're a Metis); this means a homid carrying a War glaive would still take Gnosis damage, but no physical damage. *A Fomori CAN technically be rescued by a Gurahl who knows the proper rites. *There's a more complicated system to Moon Bridges involving the strength of the Caern, distance traveled, etc. which I will cover in a later video.

You forgot about the realms between the penumbra and deep umbra (also called the middle umbra). For example: battle ground, the cyber realm, Pangaea, the abyss and more! Even the dreaming and the underworld have very hard to find entrances in the middle umbra!

In 1999 when i was living overseas and doing my Uni studies, i had two groups of friends that i got into DnD and RPG games. Total of 5 mates and only 3 knew each other which formed 1 group and the other 2 knew each other which formed the other group. I introduced 3 mates to Werewolf and made them the wolves. The 2 other friends who didnt know the first group of mates i made them play the Vampires. They didnt know i was running the same campaign at the same time. After 6 months of playing i had the group finally meet at a BBQ at my place. Little did they know that 3 of them were play the wolves and 2 of them the vampires... so i took my 2 mates into a room and ran their campaign while the other guys played on the PS1... 45 minutes in i called in the other guys, i sat them down and i explained to the Vampire group that the facility alarm had been triggered. At that point they had no idea what was going on. I turned to the Vampires and said... "before you stand 3 brothers.... 3 werewolf brothers who have come to take back the clan totem that was earlier stolen...by you and brought to his facility". See i had contracted the vampires to protect the totem for a favour for giving them a sort of endless supply of blood by setting up a blood bank across the world to help them drink when needed. The HAVOC, yelling and swearing that ensued for the next 6 hours was freaking AMAZING... dices been thrown at each other and the guys getting pissed at each other made it even sweeter. At the end the wolves over powered the vampires and immombilized them to take back to the clans location for further punishment. But they still had to get the totem.... i ended it there.. boy was i so happy and they were so pissed at each other. The whole day the spent eating and drinking and no one bothered to ask one another what games they liked and stuff lol.My diabolical plan worked!

I know you have many more videos on Werewolves, so I'm not judging - but person thoughts on the Weaver trapping the Wyrm started during the War of Rage [which is a whole video by itself] and humanity spread by using advances in farming during the earliest civilizations [Mesopotamia/Egypt/China] - So any Garou who believe they could have done something just two generations ago is pure hubris, which, admittedly, they have in great supply. You may have already said all of this in future videos, but I love Werewolf. It is My Go To Game in the World of Darkness. Playing Vampire is fun, but having Ultimate Battle Prowess at the start, my players have to learn that not all fight have to be solved by violence

Hey Primogen I got a question, so I am making a homebrew WtA Game, themed towards the film wolfwalkers. What would your opinion be on removing the War of Rage? I feel like it would get to much into the ways of the Wolfwalker vibes and tone I am aiming for. I know the Golden Rule and such and that in the grand scheme of things the only opinion that matters is my players and I. But I'd like to hear a more experienced player's thoughts.

The Garous protect the world, the Vampires are servants of the Weaver or the Worm (well, as far as I understand) but what is the role of humans in the natural cycle of things? and that of the fairies? unless they don't have one? Hi! Glad to hear you've fallen down the hole! :D Gaia is a separate thing from the Triad (Wyld, Weaver, Wyrm). A lot of Garou lean towards the Wyld, but that's risky as well because an unbalance on any part in the Triad will lead to disaster. Humanity are generally unaligned, but have become servants of the Weaver in some regard as Civilization and Technology are considered Weaver-created things. Fae are unrelated, I believe, but would most likely be closest to the Wyld in their nature, being somewhat chaotic and a creative force.

Some Humans in WOD turn into Hunters through the Imbueing. They can then percieve the darkness around them and are tasked with doing something about it. What that something is however, is up to them. They might not know or care about the Wyrm, oppose you as an inhuman beast, or ally with you. They do get special powers however, so a group of Hunters could be a threat to anyone.

There's the matter of clan of the Methuselah, as well as the age and experience of the Garou. Plus, Garou hunt in packs. A Gangrel like Odin will definitely have an easier time killing Garou than Helena the Toreador.

Yuuup! The World of Darkness is all *sort of* connected. Running cross-splat games always gets a bit complicated because the systems aren't 100% compatible but most importantly each game has a distinct theme that might clash with the others, but it's certainly doable!

Elder vampires can easily kill werewolves. Especially since they tend to have a lot of direct or indirect options.

Each "species" has different branches of general expertise. Vampires are seductive, influence humans and corporations and tend to blend in, and they can multiply nearly instantly. Werewolves live more secluded, are generally a little bit more aggressive than your normal human, and are low in numbers, but absolute killing machines on the battle field. Any vamp found by a Garou will die. Any Garou sept found by the corp the vamp directed to repurpose the land of its Caern will have a very hard time to keep it. The power distribution is similar to mages and hunters. Each one has a specific part it excels and for the rest they are just normal meat.

It's a separate RPG for sure, but they intersect a lot. Bloodlines is a game set in the World of Darkness, and all the games from White Wolf take place there. So you have Vampire: the Masquerade, Werewolf: the Apocalypse, Mage: the Ascension, and so on.
