Great tool recommendations. Wife wore red wing boots when she delivered for airborne and DHL. I wore them for years while working as a tech. Bought them direct at the Red Wing store in Red Wing Minnesota. Best boots I ever owned. Still have my match holder from like 50 years ago, been many miles and miles on trips. My dad had a Swiss Army knife all my life. It’s in my china cabinet to him. It was always in his pocket. It is the deluxe tinker model. Mom hated it because it wore a hole in the back right pocket where he kept it and she had to continually fix the pocket. Thanks for bringing back the memories.

If you spend your working day in boots then $300 is not a great amount to spend on something that protects your feet. You don't want to have sore feet after just 30 minutes. I remember paying $140 for a pair (can't remember the brand) 40+ years ago and at the end of a 12 hour shift my feet felt like they were still walking on air.

Merry christmas ! I used my swiss army knife with a small pair of vice grips to get a passenger locomotive going. After a 1.4 mill rebuild, a 15 cent knob cracked. Knife took out the set screw, vice grip grabbed shaft, left to prime, right to start. My self a track inspector and the signalman I was working with got out of that 149 degree engine room to the applause of the 600 passengers that had gotten off because of no AC. I loved my job !

The Prusa printers are a real workhorse machine. We have about two dozen at the tech tips factory. One note about your MK3, it can be upgraded to a MK4 with an add-in kit, the kit is also not cheap. I like using them when I don't care about speed, I just need it to print accurately. If I want to print stuff fast, we have the Bambu units for small things and the Pantheon for big things. The Pantheon's head moves so fast that it pulls 3 Gs. It's nuts.

@@WatchWesWork Wes, if you have a sec, take a look at the things they're doing with metal 3D printers. The folks on the engineering side have a Rapidia machine. It prints out powdered metal which is then cured, as is my understanding of it. They did a full prototype of the LTT screwdriver handle in the machine, I was impressed at how solid it felt. Wild stuff.

And I must get that book on project estimations. That has been my experience on every single project I’ve worked on. Every single one. One employer, the Program Manager and management estimated 12 months for a ground up, clean sheet design program. When the company went bankrupt/out of business 6 years later, the project was still in development and was never released.

Hey Wes, About the Red Wing boots, I have been wearing them for about 40 years. I rotate 2 pair because after a 12 hour day they need to be aired out. The newest pair I have is 15 years old. I'm in a factory and not on gravel, so they wear very well. I'm also not crawling around so the toes don't wear out. The ritual I stand by to skirt the 2 weeks of agony is this: Soak them over night just past the ankle preferably in warm water. with 2 pair of sox, wear them until they are dry. (best to do this in the summer) Your feet might smell worse that night, but they will be the best fitting boots you have. The leather will shrink in the loose spots and stretch in the tight ones. A perfect mold of your foot. I know you are thinking that's weird, but once you try it you will be a believer. Mike

I can't thank you enough for recommending the book, "Visual Thinking". I started reading it and was almost in tears before the end of the foreword. I have always felt like a failure because I didn't complete my degree in engineering. I always got flummoxed by calculus and could not go on to the engineering classes. I am not on the spectrum but so much of what the author describes applies to me. What a revelation! Thank you so much!

Regarding "How to Get Big Things Done" , I would ALWAYS err on the side of longer completion times and budgets (IC design and manufacturing company, the Advanced R&D division) and even my own boss would hard time me on that, but I was always in the end more accurate as the final costs and completions were longer than even MY estimates. Later we both saw eye to eye on some big projects we were both part of but didn't dream up, and finally got the ear of the VP to kill off some that would truly drain the coffers and offer nothing. NASA could take a few lessons from that book, Wes!

Regarding the book "How Big things get done", once big projects get going you kind of have no choice but to finish it. Most people optimistically give low initial bids and optimistic time to completion estimates knowing full well that it's going to cost more and take longer but once it's past the halfway mark you have no choice but to continue the project regardless of cost or time estimates. That's true with my own personal projects too, I always go into the project optimistically but once I'm past that halfway mark I kind of have no choice but to just finish it and it cost what it costs and it takes as much time as it takes. I think that's just human nature.

Visual Thinking is an amazing book by an amazing author (Also highly, HIGHLY recommend Thinking in Pictures by the same author). I cannot say enough how great it is and it is awesome to see it recommended here. Even if you are not a visual thinking type person, it is a must read to help understand those that are. As someone who had a child diagnosed with ADHD early on in his life, it took years to realize that I was just like my son my ignored the signs. The book is not really about ADHD at all, but a lot of the thought processes are similar and it was a great read for my wife and I, and now my son finished it recently. LEGO build instructions are also an excellent example of visual versus verbal direction. Also, it's great you like Swiss Army knives and are learning about the Swiss Army knife of programming - Python.

I wait every week to watch your video, because I am subscribed to so many channels, your channel is the one I like the most. Over the past 2 years I have been down a very horrible personal life, I am very very happy for you because your wife said that she loves you. Please do not take it for granted, you truly do not know what you have until it’s not their anymore. Merry Christmas WWW!!!!!

Thank you. Your smiles are infectious. Have a wonderful Christmas and every day in between. Ps. I've always thought I had more of a photographic memory, and I really struggled in school. But I excelled in shop classes. And for what ever reason no watch or mechanical device was safe from my overwhelming desire to tear it apart to see what made it work. Eventually I learned how to put things back together.

I loved this. You are a wealth of knowledge and experience and I'm lucky to be subbed to your channel. I also loved that mentioned the Python books because there's not a lot of mechanics that branch out into the programming side of things. But your troubleshooting approach shows how you take the time to understand the systems before trying to solve the problems so you can understand how it all works together. You seem like a solid dude and I really enjoy watching the dynamic between you and your wife. You're both very adorable together, but tell her you love her, you numskull! On a side note, there was a biopic about Temple Grandin a few years ago that anyone here with interest should watch. They show her childhood and struggles growing up. And later they show her success with animal management as a result of her thinking style from having autism. She also blazed a trail as a woman in her field way back when it was only men. I highly recommend that Temple Grandin film with Claire Danes. Happy holidays!

For the 3D printer if you're looking for something that just works out of the box and want to use it more as a tool than a hobby like myself, I'd recommend the Bambu Labs P1S or P1P for a cheaper price. Yes, they're made in China, but my P1P has been the best desktop 3D printer I've ever used. It prints almost 3x as fast as a Prusa, the quality is amazing, and the printer just works. I have done absolutely no tinkering with the machine as its just worked! Thanks for the other ideas Wes and Happy Holidays!

RedWing boots are worth the money and when I bought mine I got lifetime free shoe laces and leather cleaning and conditioning included! I just take them back to the store where I bought them and after a 10 to 15 minute wait they are fully cleaned and conditioned. No other brand offers that to my knowledge. I got my Swiss Army knife as a Boyscout back in Germany when I was 10 years old ... 47 years later I still have and use it all the time, it did not come with a toothpick though 😊
