These statues stood everywhere in this town. I think the donkey is the symbol of this town.

They are donkeys. It's sort of something that has become a tradition and symbol of the city and it all originates from the popular phrase: „Wie heißt der Bürgermeister von Wesel? Esel.“ which is some sort of echo joke
