I use Arm's Length and Reprisal in every pull that I can use them in. Severely reduces damage taken. It's free mitigation without using your regular mitigation skills, and Healers love that shit.

I honestly don't get how you're supposed to W2W without them, you won't have enough mitigation to last the entire pull if you only use your job specific mitigation

I often find arm’s length more useful than even heavy mitigation since it’s mean less AOE from trash mob and mine DPS can do their job safer for it.

Its definitely hard to get used to as a beginner tank, at least during pulls maintaining two rotations is quite a feat. But then I see tanks that don't even use their AOE to gain enmity on a pull...

I know the chances of it happening will surely be so low it isn't worth hoping for, but one of these days I'm gonna queue into an extreme and we're gonna be in a bind. The other tank will be dead, and we'll be down to one healer at 1/4 hp, the whole party nearing a wipe. I'll be nearly dead with five seconds away from LD, and I'm gonna do the unthinkable. I'm gonna purposely shirk on the highest DPS with the intention of using their health bar as mitigation. It's honestly my greatest wish. To kill someone in my stead be shirking just before a tank buster comes out sounds like the greatest troll imaginable. Far superior to "Rescuing" someone into Amon's Curtain Call. And the best part will be that I can just brush it off as resourceful thinking.

I had a dps troll me in dzaemael darkhold by triggering the end boss cutscene during the last ad pull, causing our sprout healer to enter a cutscene while I died to the ads (and because I was pld I couldn’t invuln it). Honestly wasn’t even that mad it was so gigabrain. The dungeon was already a clownfiesta with cure 3 spam so, lol.

@@smartyuno Oh, bless their heart! 😭😂 It's always a fun time trying to explain things to people, like how using Benefic 1 in Aurum Vale is probably not going to lead to happy tanks, or how you can in fact be a healer and still attack enemies. Most of the time it's a nice little learning moment where you get to pass on class tips, but I still wonder where that WM who refused to cast a single Stone during the entire dungeon despite being asked nicely by both DPS is now.

My biggest use of shirk is when off tanking as dark knight, and I press living shadow. with how much damage it does, combined with all the other stuff I am doing, I have to shirk sometime during the duration, or play around with turning tank stance off. 6-7 hits of 300 is a HUGE pseudo-dot, and that will rapidly overtake the enmity of the main tank if neither are paying attention to their enmity gauge.

Shirk to MT is a given, you're doing dps and you expect to get a lot of aggro for it

I think Low Blow can be considered damage mitigation in a pull versus larger hard hitting mobs. As a healer, I can see that sometimes a single enemy is outputting a considerable amount of damage, enough to not make me “stare” at the HP loss rate of the tank and decide how concerned I need to be. A full stun of 5 seconds to make that enemy do zero damage is 25% less damage for 20 seconds, 20% less damage for 25 seconds, etc. Not a deal breaker since mobs are all healable anyways, but can make a stressed healer more at ease to DPS away and dungeon runs go that much faster.

I'm still a fairly new tank despite being level cap. How do you guys normally cycle defensive CDs? I usually start with Arms Length + Reprisal, then a choice between Rampart or the job specific short CD like TBN or Holy Sheltron, then for the next mob pull it's the 30% mitigation and maybe another short job CD and hopefully by then I can cycle with Arms length and Reprisal.

I’d say depends on the group. The 65 dungeon being the most miserable one. I say either start with the inv then before it ends start with arms then reprisal (no arms if you have a holy mage in your group especially as drk unless you informed them of your pull plan) I then do use my cd depending on what the ads are but usually would be the rampart so I can save my stronger cd for the non inv coming if you didn’t already use it. If you’re warrior you can just GIGACHAD it off. It’s mainly a comfort and feel type of thing when doing tank pulls in dungeons and knowing if you’re gonna take very type of damage so you know what to cycle with what.

@@vkrunk7 That's what I forgot to mention, depending on how big the first trash pack is, I either use invuln at the start or not. Bardems Mettle is a certain kind of pain tanking. I was surprised to get demolished after popping Hallowed, then Sentinel, and realizing it wasn't enough, panic spamming the rest of my defensives.

A niche, kinda scuffed use of Provoke you might have to deal with is judiciously using it in Alliance Raids when one of the other tanks is insistent on keeping their stance on and taking the boss aggro, but doesn't know how to position the boss properly (or worse, actively keeps it turned towards the party, sometimes intentionally). You will often lose aggro soon after, but Provoke enmity will usually last long enough for you to pull the boss back to it's place, at the very least. _Make sure you actually know the fight if you do this._ A slight decentering of the boss is fine. Holding the boss nice and still at a direction that is not North is (usually) also fine. This is for situations where the boss position might _genuinely_ cause problems.

As a tank noob I was worried about people saying you should 'never' use provoke when it had no obvious downsides. Glad to hear it can be used fine in combo with Shield Lob. I have a hard time timing the AOE to hit all the mobs sometimes and one runs off towards the healer, provoke being oGCD seems ideal for that situation to bring it back to the group so I can AOE it. Now I seriously wish you could practise interject on a dummy because I always hit it too late.

Regarding Arm's Length and the +20% slow, if it was +100% slow, would the enemies have 0% attack speed or 50%? Are we sure it is effectively a 20% damage reduction, or is it just 10%?

I do believe it slows enemies to an 80% attack speed. The actual value of the skill is much more complex due to magic enemies and such. The point is to use it!

You very very VERY rarely can save a trash pull in a dungeon if the tank goes down. The other DPS has to not do damage or have a dot up but you can SOMETIMES sleep enough of the pack for the healer to fix the situation.
