My life changed too when I started doing this and putting money in stocks. The first few years it as really great, but this year I haven't felt like my portfolio is doing well. I have lost more than $40,000 from my portfolio the past four months, and it's now very worrisome.

Well said! I am also here to learn how to invest after listening to a lady on tv talk about the importance of investing and how she made 7 figures in 3 months, somehow the video taught me nothing and left me even more confused, I'm a newbie and I'm open to ideas on how to invest for retirement

Where did you get the ~23000 or the ~2560 values, why not 23 and 25 or 100 and 600?
@taggerinc2652

He's taking the numbers from the actual indexes. Dow is currently valued at around 26000 pts and the S&P around 3100 points. But his computations are incorrect and having nothing to do with the actual value of a point on either index.

Thx for sharing...However, I'm kinda of confused regarding your explanation of Dow index where you used market cap of $6.2T and divided into the index of 23000. I thought Dow is based on price index and not market cap.....Can you shed some light????

@tomworrall190
@tomworrall190 2 жыл бұрын
@@Vajra1021 And how do you do that? Do you take the actual market cap and scale it up or down based on its share price? Why not just add up all the share prices and divide by current index value? The share prices weight themselves.

So the Dow and the s&p could be considered to be basically the thermometers for the price and value of these companies?

So, what indexes would be more responsive to the entire stock market, rather than to just a few great companies? I'm thinking that those indexes would be great investments during market lows, since they will move more on the way back up, giving you a greater bang for your buck. Thanks for your thoughts.

Skip to 3:55 to see the computations he uses for the dow and 5:45 for the S&P 500. He isn't even correct. The computation he uses doesn't tell you what one point on either index is worth. It's way more complicated than that. To see the actual computation go here: www.investopedia.com/ask/answers/05/sp500calculation.asp

Find the value of 1 point. And the market price of the dow. Eg. 1 point is 270,000,000 and the market cap is 62Trillion. So then you say 6,200,000,000,000/270,000,000. Which gives you roughly 23,000

Too much faith is put into these numbers! Not many people realize that the crash of 1929 was only 150 pts. even today if it goes into freefall(down 1,000 or more pts.) the only way to stop it is to shut down the market.

The S&P, The Nasdaq, The Russel, The Dow Jones, SPY & TSLA etc. They've all failed since the beginning of 2022. The S&P lost about 13-14 percent and more since the beginning of the year. And Because of that there are a lot of opportunities that you can take if you are willing to profit from the market.
