3 Tricks for Removing Stuck Lens Filters!

After taking several old vintage lenses apart, I used a course rubber glove and only applied pressure straight down onto the ring or filter. That way there is absolutely no side (distorting) pressure, only even pressure from above. It works like a charm.

OMG!!! I've been struggling to separate two filters with no luck whatsoever. I watched five KZbin videos before yours and still no luck. As I was watching your first method, I picked up my filters following your example and they came apart so easily that I thought my fingers surely must have slipped. I laughed for 5 minutes. I couldn't believe it.

Perfect! The note that filters are flimsy and bent was the issue. Mine wouldnt budge, but using less force ans redistributed across as many fingers as i could did the trick. Thank you 👍

OMG!!! I had a CPL filter stuck on a step up ring. I have tried and tried. I put the the stuck ring and filter on a lens and tried the rubber band. I can't believe how easy it came off!!! Thank you so much... : )

I had two filters which I simply could not separate, no matter what I tried. They came apart so easily when I just grabbed each one in one spot with my finger tips. Great tip. Thanks!!

Heat and lens wrench worked for me, put the larger ring face down on top of a radiator for around 15 minutes and it was just enough to allow it to unscrew.

Holy crap. I was trying to he-man this filter off another step up ring, and by just applying finger pressure no gloves, and changing the grip around with multiple fingers, the filter came off easily with out a ton of force. I was using some Lens wrenches before but it was applying a lot of pressure on 2 points and not around the whole thing. Thanks for the video!

You can get whole sets of lens wrenches that work great, but yeah if they’re not the right size for your filter, it won’t distribute the force evenly enough to be useful.

Hey, just did a safer variation of the heat method. I boiled a kettle, filled the hot water 3 mm in a pan and put the lens in head first. The nasty dirty filter which has wedged in tight over my gorgeous lens for 2 years FINALLY let go of it's vice like grip after 15 seconds

I was realy struggling with my uv filter on my Canon lens 58mm and I succeded by putting masking tape on the filter so I had a larger area to havemore grip. I'll loved your way with heat well done.

Using elastic/rubber bands to remove the filter is a great trick and it works very well ....BUT!! it only works better when removing polarizing 2 part circular filters. I've tried to remove a uv filter but the elastic band is a struggle to get and keep on the outer perimeter of the filter so I'd suggest using a rubber glove!

I honestly thought I cross-threaded my super expensive circ-pol filter and step-up ring together, because I was trying so hard to twist them apart that my fingers started hurting for about an hour. Or I was worried that my gripping deformed the filter/adapter so that they couldn’t be separated. Then I tried STEP ONE… from your suggestions and they came apart like cake LOL. Thank you so much!

I watched a few videos before watching this one. I thought the filter would never come off. I looked around the house, used AN IPHONE CHARGING CABLE to wrap around the grip and the filter came off the lens!

I tried these methods and they were still stuck, so I decided to spray some WD-40 on them and they came apart in a minute or two. This was a filter and an attachment that wasn't attached to a camera but to each other.

Hello, i havent found a single video that is about two stuck stepup rings, its always a filter or lens involved, so please help, because there is not enough space to have a good grip. Ive tried oil, soap, pliers, but nothing is working. Ive tried to attach other rings or lens, but the two seem like stuck with cement.

I have a B@W 39mm filter stuck on a Leica Summicron. I tried everything and camera techs don't want to mess with it. Any ideas?

For a lens that expensive, I think I’d be willing to sacrifice the filter. If nothing we’ve spoken of will work, use a grippy silicone pad, like for a hot pot holder or hair straightener, and press the lens / filter down hard on it while turning to unscrew. If that doesn’t work, there are actual lens filter loosening tools available. (Expensive lens makes such tools more viable). Then beyond that (nuclear option) I would carefully shatter the filter, pull out at much glass a possible, then take wire cutters and with great care cut the side of the filter and peel it inward. Delightful. Haha

The major basic problem here that no one has mentioned is the fact that the threads are both made of aluminium. This is the kiss of death. Aluminium threads screwed together naturally dislike each other. Photographic manufacturers way back in the last centuary used brass for lens threads and indeed used brass many parts of old cameras
