If you use it for portrait in a studio as main light using f/8 aperture, with a gridded softbox, will it still be strong enough for photography?
@WesPerry Жыл бұрын
Not even close, I’m afraid.
@roybraym Жыл бұрын
@@WesPerry Not good even in a small room or small studio? Or do I have to make it f/4 aperture?
@WesPerry Жыл бұрын
If you want to shoot at f/4, with a grid, you’ll need to be at iso 640 probably (depends how big your soft box is and how far away from the subject), assuming a shutter speed of 1/160 for a subject that could be moving a bit.
@WesPerry Жыл бұрын
It’s much easier to have enough light for video, as your shutter speed will often be 1/60 or 1/48, which gives you 3-4x more light, so iso 100 or 160 for that situation.

Thanks for sharing Which stand would be appropriate or enough for this light???
@WesPerry2 жыл бұрын
Assuming you’re going to be putting a light modifier on it, it’s rather heavy, so you’ll want a strong light stand (like neewer heavy duty as I used here) or a c stand. I believe I have a link to the neewer ones in my “favourite things” in the description.

nice review. for babies photography, still life and starting video, what are the differences between FV-150, UL150 and SL150 in term of quality, noise of fan,... ? worth to pay more for 200W than 150W ? i don't imagine what 150W represents with a 85-120cm octabox+grid.
@WesPerry3 жыл бұрын
Depends on how you shoot. Most people I know tend to go with wider apertures for baby photography, so the 150 would likely be enough. But if you stop down much past f/2.8, you might want the full 200W if you’re in a big diffused box with grid. As far as differences go, the UL has no fan, and the FV has a pulse mode (I wouldn’t want to call it a flash anymore, it’s misleading). But for some reason it often costs less than the SL150, which is identical, but missing the pulse mode. They all contain the same COB LED module, though, so will produce the same light. The fan noise isn’t much at all, especially if you have a box on it, which absorbs/redirects a lot of the noise away from your subject.

Hey great review!! I just subscribed to your channel!! One thing I would ask in the future, at about the 8 minute mark you put arrows on screen to show key and fill light location... could you also include distance to light and light intensity setting?? Just helps me to get a feel for how bright ( in real world situations) the light is... thanks!!! Awesome channel and I will make sure my friends look at your stuff!!!!

can I use a regular light modifiers (common for flash) with the Godox SL150. OR should I buy a dedicated video light modifier ?
@WesPerry3 жыл бұрын
Regular modifiers are just fine for the most part, but you’ll want to stick to ones that are double diffused. Video light modifiers tend to have extra layer of diffusion right at the center to deal with the slightly more focused light pattern, but it’s not strictly necessary as long as you have good double diffusion.

The reflector is a little wider than where the umbrella bracket is, so you would have to use another umbrella bracket if you want to do that I suppose.

Great video, Wes. I was considering the Aperture models, but they are so freaking expensive, I was hoping this would be the alternative, but I'm not that wild about it.

What’s your issue with this model?
@OfficeofthePacific3 жыл бұрын
@@WesPerry, It's fine. I didn't like the remote issues, but all in all, it's a good light. I would choose the Aperture Amaran 200d over this, but I can't use it either because like 150ii it doesn't allow for battery power and I really need that feature for exterior night video.

I would sooner recommend a flash instead of constant light for photography only. Unless you’re also doing videography, even a pretty cheap flash will give you more power and better action freezing capability.

Is it brighter than the 300d ?
@WesPerry4 жыл бұрын
According to the measurements provided by the manufacturers it is, but I doubt it. I would only use the light output measurements from a light to compare to other lights in the same manufacturers lineup, because they all measure themselves so differently. The 300d is the 300 watt led light, while this is a 150 or 200 (depending on which you get) watt light, so the 300d is likely to be a bit brighter.

Why is it with all these LED COB light reviews they concentrate of light quality and features. This far down the road it's pretty difficult to find an LED COB light below 95CRi. And who cares about features like lighting effects. Fan noise is important but most of the main brands have sorted that detail out now. All of these things are with an ultra quick mention just to confirm we're dealing with a decent product worth our attention but then, move on. Even RGB and Bi-Colour though desirable are still way down the list of what is actually important. What is REALLY important = How much light is hitting the subject at TEN FEET both 'with' and 'without' a large softbox?? And can this be achieved with a reasonable F-Stop and ISO so as not to create excessive noise??? Everything else is useless information if the light cannot deliver on these basic tenants.
@WesPerry4 жыл бұрын
This light, as I’m pretty sure was mentioned in the video, has a CRI of 96+, TLCI 97, and improved R9 colour coverage (for best skin tones, a section often overlooked with older COB LED designs). Ten feet is quite far for a lot of work. Without the soft box, with the stock reflector, you’d have trouble getting decent exposure. The light would be too focused and hot without using an ND to avoid a higher shutter speed. Also, what’s a reasonable f-stop? When this light is 4 feet away in a double diffused 3’ soft box at 100% output, I’m usually exposing at f/2, 1/125s, ISO100. But every softbox will give you a different level there.
@JWS19684 жыл бұрын
@@WesPerry Thanks for responding. Ten feet is a film standard for professional lighting usually measured in foot candles. Personally I think F8 on most APSC camera bodies would be reasonable dependent on the talent of your focus puller to keep a moving subject in focus. Anything between ISO 100 to 1600 would deliver a decent useable image but that depends on the camera. Most cameras can do a decent image at ISO400. But Sony A7S for example would do better than most in this regard. This is why many are underwhelmed by these lights when they first try them out. Like I say what use is light quality if the power isn't there in the first place.
