What is the West Nile virus? The West Nile virus belongs to the genus flavivirus. It gets its name from where it was discovered, west of the Nile river in Uganda. It primarily causes infection in birds, although it can also infect other animals like horses. The West Nile virus is a zoonotic virus, which means that it can spread from animals to humans.
