To me, this "love at first sight" makes so much sense. Maria and Tony are probably the only "innocent" ones at the dance. They want peace and unity and hate the petty squabbles between the gangs. They sense that in each other and thus come together. Pure art and beauty.

There's something so awkward about this scene that makes it so charming as well as beautiful. The loud snaps, the odd phrasing, and Richard Beymer's natural awkwardness. He's not too graceful, a little clumsy and there's a clunkiness about him as if he wears his body like an oversized coat. Tony's words are also in awe but in a "I can't believe this is happening" way. Then there's the delicacy of Natalie Wood, Maria's dialogue contrast Tony's. She's also in awe but confident and direct. To top it off the rainbow lights and background dancers add the right touch of the surreal while being rooted in reality, you can tell those are stage lights or something to that effect. And the result is . . .magic.

A truly cinematic moment. Can’t believe some think the blur effect when Tony and Maria first lock eyes is dated or something that couldn’t be repeated in the 2021 version. The love at first sight moment in the new adaptation has none of the magic of this version; the whole point of this moment is to show how their meeting transports them out of the harsh reality and into an ephemeral yet no less powerful bubble consisting of nobody but each other.

i completely agree. instead they just shoved them behind some ugly bleachers. the 2021 version would’ve been pretty good if they hadn’t changed this scene. i truly can’t wrap my head around why they would.

I'm 53. I need to open with that, because most of the times I watched this movie was on television in the 1970's. Back then, there were no HDTV's with wide screens, so any number of edges of a widescreen film would be cut off in a TV broadcast. It wasn't until I was in my late 20's that I saw it on the big screen for the first time- and the scene at 0:08 of the screen blurring and Tony and Maria seeing each other for the first time (and from opposite directions of the screen) actually got a small gasp from the audience- we all suddenly felt that this was no longer just a film, but an event. Many of the film's visuals are something to behold. "America" is another wonderful sequence. And the score of Bernstein music is simply sublime and powerful at the same time.

+Norman Nelson Thank you, LOL!! I had similar reactions to Hello, Dolly! (Todd A-O) and It's A Mad, Mad, Mad World (Ultra-Panavision 70), when you could see the elusive 'big W' to the extreme left of the screen off in the distance.

The music for West Side Story really is Bernstein's masterpiece! I know that fact disappointed him a little bit. Lenny really wanted to be Gustav Mahler, and who can blame him for wanting that, to be the musical High Priest of the Transcendent. But this is really beautiful. This touches so many hearts, and if accessibility is a virtue in art, and I think it is, Lenny can stand right along side Gustav.

The superiority of the original is summarized in this one scene. Here we have poetry, ballet, magic, the inner experience of the characters. Spielberg sacrifices this for showy camera angles and a more prose realism. He therefore misses out on the intention of opera/musical theater's purpose: transformation. Sorry Stephen.

This beautifully touching scene is all the more poignant to me as my lovely parents met like this at a dance, and it was love at first sight. Because I believed in it, the same thing happened to me 35 years later. Both of our lady loves also came to a sad end, one by death (cancer) one by shock (divorce).

honestly, i get that. but if you listen to it, the middle has an absolutely stunning violin trio thing that takes your breath away. it is worth it listening to. it paints such a phenomenal picture of the beauty and simplicity of this scene, but it also subtly foreshadows future occurrences of the dynamics of their relationship. the trio is eventually undercut by a rhythmically augmented and intentionally sinister utterance of the mambo theme before the violin trio phrase finishes. it’s beautiful and deserves to be acknowledged.

I get why they had Tony and Maria have a little convo under the bleachers in the remake, it's more practical to show the two leads having a moment of connection through dialogue. But this scene will always be better to me, cause it shows how otherworldly and effortless their love is.
@alchemist4evr
@alchemist4evr 3 жыл бұрын
I find it interesting that the dancing in this movie is very innocent and celibate, as if it was from the original Shakespearean Romeo and Juliet where the dancers only touch hands and elbows; here they barely touch at all. Plus the "my hands are cold" line is a textbook flirting line from the era in the same way the "blushing pilgrims" exchange from the play was to the 16th century. Little touches like that show the creators of WSS wanted to bring more Shakespeare then just the plot points.

@Caitlin Mendoza for Bernardo, it didn't really matter. As far as he's concerned, Maria was to just be his best friend Chino's old lady. Remember earlier that Anita said that Bernardo brought Maria to America to marry Chino and later Bernardo tells Maria that when she's an old married woman with five children, she can tell HIM what to do. Bernardo pretty much has no respect for his sister.

I love West Side Story. I loved Natalie Woods as Maria. I loved how Tony and Maria found each other. And the ending is where I really broke down . Maria's speech about how not bullets but hate killed Tony, Bernardo and Riff was beautiful. But even though I loved Tony and Maria I liked Anita and Bernardo better. I mean they were a very charismatic couple and deserved a better ending. But that's just my opinion.

Sadly enough, Bernardo and Riff would have had a lot of trouble getting along because they are too much alike. Would they have been willing/able to change their ways? Bernardo wanted to be in America but didn't want to attempt to conform. Sadly, Anita and Maria wound up paying a price for it.

Nobody ever notices Jonathan Larson borrowed the 'cold hands' bit for Rent.
@vinista256
@vinista256 4 жыл бұрын
Umm … actually, he borrowed it from “La Bohème”. Do a Google search of “Che gelida manina” (you DID know that “Rent” is based on Puccini’s “La Bohème” … didn’t you?).

@@vinista256 Yes thank you I DO know that. And I also know the song in La Boheme doesn't include the exchange "My hands are cold" "Yours too". I know what DOES have that exchange though.

There's something I don't like about the way this movie is set up. The 'love at first sight' feels totally fake. They're both really attractive but I don't feel like they had one interesting conversation. They see each other for the first time and fall in love in about twenty seconds. They walk towards each other like magnets, eyes glazed over in a trance. Then they kiss after having scarcely said a word to each other. I don't feel any 'love' here just superficial attraction, downright lust.

Well, it's based on Romeo and Juliet. That was the exact plotpoint.

It's a musical bro. Plus it's based off of Romeo and Juliet. Things like this are meant to be exaggerated and dramatized.
