West Virginia Back Roads Reed's Mill, Second Creek, W.Va.

Reed's Mill is the last of at least 20 mills that once operated on Second Creek between Peter's Mountain and the Greenbrier River. The mill is owned by Larry Mustain, whose uncle Aubrey Reed operated the mill from 1924 until his death in 1989, at which Larry took over the mill and farm. Facing many challenges inherent to the mill and its water supply, as well as his infirmities, Larry struggles with the future of the mill, which includes a broom factory. Filmed in October 2021.

Glad to see Larry getting a chance to talk about the mill. I worked with him a few years ago on another short doc. Unfortunately we couldn’t spend as much time in the video going though the mill as you did. Great job!

This is where my Nichols ancestors grew up in Monroe County. If the walls could talk in that mill I bet one of my ancestors bought some kind of grain from that mill in the 100 years. I sure wish I could visit this mill to say that I walked the same floors as my ancestors.

There use to be a broommaker in Charleston WV that had been making brooms for 80 years and owned the original equipment. He retired a few years back and passed on the craft to a woman out of Kirby WV. Wanda Hott was her name.
