Thanks Chief :) There were some very keen enthusiasts back then; especially as the west coast isn't particularly populated, so getting around wasn't as straightforward as now.

Cheers mate. It was from an old VHS from many years ago. Quite nice to see normal rail services at that period off the beaten track, rather than the usual r&ls excursions. To be though, such an enormous debt of gratitude to those kiwis who had the pretty expensive movie cameras (at a time when a fridge was a luxury and a dishwasher was your wife) and went out in the wops in an Austin cambridge (no mean feat) and filmed these things.

To me the X class would have been fitting on the coast in those days. Fits more the old engine climate back. More than say the J class. But would probably restricted to the Otira line.

Good call. I've always felt that the J just smacked too much of SIMT loco (or NI branch). Wonderful minds image of double headed B's with an X pusher staggering up the Buller. Imagine an X blasting it's way up to Rewanui... no little Ww's wobbling about... By Crikey David you are a man with taste

A bit of NZ style bluegrass. Our Kiwi buddies are great musco's. They do this extremely well. From Al in Aus
