Needless to say the freeway was done in odd sections mostly to bypass slow sections. The diversion around Pykes Creek was done in the 1960s before bypasses were done of Bacchus Marsh and Gordon in 1972. The Bacchus Marsh section was extended west to bypass Pentland Hills and Myrniong in 1973 to 1975. Ironically Ballan wasn't bypassed until 1978 with Wallace and Bungaree opened in 1983. Closer to Melbourne the old highway was duplicated hence the odd intersection remains between Melton and Deer Park with Melton not bypassed until 1987. The Leakes Road Rockbank interchange was part of the Deer Park bypass project. Anthony's cutting between Melton and Bacchus Marsh was realigned in 2011 with the older road itself a realignment of the original from 1959. Travelling on the old road here you can see the original stone bridge over Djerriwarrh Creek from 1859. Ballarat was bypassed 1993/94 but only the eastern end was freeway standard with several roundabouts and a single carriageway further west, later replaced by interchanges and duplicated.

The overhead speed display signs at 3:00 have been replaced with speed cameras - revenue before safety - all the way.

Eventually the Western Freeway will begin at Stawell. There's also talk of a freeway bypass of Horsham, however that's still in planning

Nice job! Driving on those straights at the beginning of the video must be a bit tiring.

+Roads of Europe (verreme) Thanks! Exciting actually! The 7 hours of driving before this point was much more tiring. The closer we got to Melbourne, the better!!!
