I've seen this locomotive in person at the B&O many times and even as a small child I always thought it was sad to see beautiful steam engines just wasting away. I'm glad to see it made it back out on the rails.

You will have to come see her running in person now. Glad you enjoyed.

Thanks. 1309 sure is a pretty engine.

This locomotive needs about 50 loaded coal hoppers on the end and some mainline to run on.

Has to be the second coolest thing a steam locomotive has done this year behind 2102 pulling those 100 hoppers. I love that she looks almost as dirty as an actual C&O/WM articulated in the 50s, this really does look like a scene right out of the history books. It might be blasphemous to say but honestly, 1309 is so far a much more interesting locomotive to watch than 4014. 4014 can't leave the yard without a helper, two fuel tenders and two tool cars, yet here is 1309, a significantly smaller engine, doing it all on her own, and doing it so much that she builds up a layer of grime reminiscent of the steam age.

The best part is that I think the wmsr offered to wash 1309 for the photo freight but trains magazine said to leave it dirty. The coolest thing I’ve seen a steam engine do this year was 1309 out pull a sd40 on full dynamics. Its very rare to see a steam locomotive work that hard in modern times.

I think 4014 is burdened with a lot of corporate rules and regulations.

@@1940limited 100%. 4014 is still the most capable steam engine in the rails today, but they'll never show off its capabilities. It already did that in the 40s and 50s though.

Why was the diesel on the end in some shot but not others?
@haydenharman23512 жыл бұрын
All of the shots where taken over the corse of 2 days. The first day 558 was connected to the passenger train. The second day it followed behind 1309 until it was needed to guide it back down the mountain. So typically shots of the diesel in it means that we were on our way down the mountain.

Some beautiful stuff. When was this shot and who set it up for Kalmbach? Was Pete Lerro involved? P.S. I'll answer my own first question. I think this is a TRAINS Magazine sponsored photo freight shot November 4th to 6th, 2022. Thank you, Google! Still no word about Pete Lerro that I could find, though.

Load those hoppers up with coal and put a few of the brakes on. Then she can really test her strength
