I'm curious why the engine crew is using a lot of blower. It appears engine exhaust ought to be enough.

Im not so sure they are. Its a compound engine, most of the superheated steam will be very saturated by the time it exhausts out the second set of cylinders. Hence the plume of white in cold weather.

I think that this was a picture taking session, and using the blower for added effect. I was talking to one of the crew back a few years ago ( on a photo session with #734) and the one fella said everyone wants more smoke and steam 🙂 and I'm sure that the crew is still learning the locomotive too.

I’m pretty sure 1309 has a chance to outpull 4014 ever since they converted 4014 to an oil burner… So no, 4014 is not better.
