Western Screech Owl

I had one fly into my windshield a few years ago. I stopped, but thought it was dead. But it soon began moving. So I took the bird home and put it in a cardboard box with a small blanket. The next morning, it was sitting up moving around, but it's head flopped about and it only circled to the left when moving. I found a sanctuary in Rowena, Oregon that took the bird in. I didn't hear from them for two months, so I figured either he (they determined he was a male) was unreleasable, or had passed from his injuries. But then I got a call, asking me to pick up the owl and release him as close to where he'd been hit as possible. Turns out they have a very small range. So I went and got him. At first, he was cool with just chilling in his carrier box, but about half way back to Goldendale, he got out. He then perched on my passenger seat headrest, watching intently as I drove. He didn't move from there. When I got back to the place he'd flown into me, I actually had to shoo him from the car! He flew off into a nearby pine, looked back at me for a few moments, then disappeared into the forest. That was the last time I saw him. If I've related this incident before, I apologize. I'm dealing with "chemo fog" although I've had (hopefully!) my last treatment.

It took me years to realize how tiny they are. I have seen many in dark mornings deer hunting. As I get into birding, I find I can add legitimately to my count with just memories! What a great way to get outdoors! I often combine it with mushrooming, berry picking, Grouse hunting(sorry folks but sportsmen and women pay for most of the habitat improvements that go on), shed hunting, fishing and big game scouting. You should see burrowing owls, smallest owls I've ever seen. They hang out in my backyard at night

@@kristinlee9485 , there are different types of hunting, some of it is truly bad but hunting can be helpful at times. The real problem is overdevelopment. What, you want that people rely on factory farming instead. That is true cruelty.

So I just spent an hour trying to figure out what this call was in my backyard in the evening. That is so awesome it turned out to be an owl! I know we have Great horned owls but somehow I hadn't clued in to this little one. I am definitely going to listen in the evening and see if I can spot one. Great video!

Thank you for posting this video. I have had a creature outside my window for a couple of weeks making this sound. It would be answered by another creature someplace a few hundred feet away. I looked out the window so many nights trying to see what it was. I was not sure if it was a mammal up in the tree or a bird. This is exactly the sound I am hearing. Now I know what to look for.

They are SO cute!! A few years ago, I found one with a damaged wing outside of my yard on the street. I'm not sure what happened to her. She had no wounds otherwise, so I think maybe she bumped into a moving car or something. She lived in my bathroom for a few days and I fed her raw chicken... Hear me out. I live in Seattle, and there was a snowstorm. Seattle is not snow-friendly so we could not take her to a rescue center until a few days later where when driving became safe, and, I believe, she was put to sleep due to her wing not being fixable or something like that. It was really sad... She was a feisty little thing. She never made the noises in the video but would make a lot of clicking sounds. She would nip at times and I would need to use an oven mit for her to sit on me. Those talons were like razor blades! Oh and she was a brown owl.

Very very common for owls to get hit by cars. They hunt alongside roads, and they'll spot mice and other small creatures on the road. Those creatures tend to "freeze" when car headlights approach, and when creatures freeze the owl flies down to strike.

That clicking sound is a sign they're annoyed and feel intruded upon, LOL ~ it means, "keep your distance." I have one that is currently living in my front atrium, which is outside and walled in, but no roof. He/she hangs out under a small canopy housing my house water filter. The first time I noticed him/her, I walked out to get my hummingbird feeder and heard this clicking sound. When I went back inside, I looked out my kitchen window and there the little one sat, under the canopy. He has been coming and going for almost two months now. The little guy is very cute, but OMG those talons!!!!

Before the fires hit in Oregon, I'd never heard and Owl hooting let alone a Great Owl like I hear right now. It's the second time here. Last time was earlier but now it's 12:39 am.. Back when the fires hit this past summer and 3 of our neighboring cities were set ablaze and people lost there homes, I heard one at 3am .. I got up and said to my husband something feels bad , like something is coming, next night 3 wolves came in our camp ground about the same time. Next morning the fires hit. Ya know the ones here in Southern Oregon that were purposely set..🥺🥺🥺.. the RV next to us is a couple who lost there home and more here and every RV park ,camp site and some in motels if not moved in with Family. One of the scariest times in my life to be taking off not knowing if we were driving into worse fires away from some or not. We parked at the mall and slept and it felt like the world was ending. I thank God so many people came out of this ...I really do.. I sure pray this Owl isn't a warning 🙏...

I hear them all the time, I'm in north Dallas, I Iive out in Richardson TX. I hear them all the time. We have had two of them recently come in our yard and back. It is so cool 😎 they always respond to this when I play it, it is so cute. We have birds from all over. We have a park near us, and you can see birds from everywhere. It is really neat, but we love when these little cuties come through. My husband even bought a screech owl house 🥰😊😊

The western screech owl makes the same whinnying hoot call as its equivalent species, the eastern screech owl. Quite an extraordinary distinctive call coming from these species of owls. I see clearly what Indigenous Native tribal people consider owls to be spiritual embodiments associated with earthly correlations between life and death.

Heard an owl this morning and recorded it. Sure sounds like this! But other times of the year I've heard the Hoo hoo sound which is a different sound and slower and deeper. Is this also the Western Screech?

Actually it is. See my earlier post. If you mean their call, yes, they don't often "screech" unless they're agitated. But most owls will when stressed.
