Depending on how close this is to the main runway i know that there is a cargo building going in there being started soon so they might be digging up rock for it at the moment in that location

@@ExplorationofAustralia only problem is, the Metro construction is lagging a bit behind...hopefully they pick up the pace so the line and Airport can open at the same time

Would be ideal to have them open at the same time. I'm still amazed they aren't going to run 24/7 . Although that would mean they would have to run the rest of rail network run 24/7 as well

@@ExplorationofAustralia yeah pretty stupid for not running the metro 24/7 a long side a 24/7 Airport. Looks like Uber and taxis will be making a killing because of it

Wow, I would have thought some innovative design would have been employed for the $11 billion it’s costing. Clearly our airports are designed for domestic travel. We are not a hub for international travellers so why should we compete with the likes of Changi airport. Ugly but utilitarian. Hopefully it won’t be obsolete once completed as the M4 constantly is.

I cant help but think that when they open this terminal it will be way too small and very inconvenient which will put airlines and passengers off using it

Small ???. Go to Google Maps and check its size, now (while keeping the same scale), slide across to Sydney Airport and compare it to terminal sizes there. Its size is deceptive until you get close to it in person. Or, just drive past it. Plus, it is only the first part of the first stage. The seven 'piers' you can see (each of which can handle 1 wide bodied airliner, 2 single aisled airliners, or 4 smaller commuter aircraft) will eventually number over 70. It still over two years until it opens, yet three airlines have already signed up to operate from there, (Qantas, Jetstar and Singapore) with two basing aircraft there. Initially the capacity will be for around 10 million passengers per year, (about three times that of Canberra or twice that of Gold Coast). The next stage increases the length of the first terminal 'wings'. The second parallel runway and at least four such terminals, (all interconnected in a big 'H' pattern) will increase it to over 80 million a year . That's around twice as much as Sydney and similar to London Heathrow. All of that information is very easily to find online. You can see the first stage and eventual stages Airport Site Layout 10 MAP and Airport Site Layout 82 MAP Only one runway at Sydney Airport has a similar runway length. It will also the first airport in Australia be equipped with systems (Cat IIIB) that enable landings to be done in very low visibility conditions. As for inconvenient. it's much more convenient for Western Sydney (note it is WESTERN SYDNEY Airport, not 'Sydney's second airport'). Western Sydney already has a larger population than the rest of Sydney, is growing faster, has more employment and industry, and by itself is Australia's third largest city. Sure, people will still use Sydney Airport, when it's more convenient for where they live; but they are increasingly in the minority.

The first terminal is designed to handle 10million passengers a year. There’s 3 more terminals to come as demand increases.
@quarkcypher
@quarkcypher Ай бұрын
It's meant to reach maximum capacity by the 2060s. The airport will be expanded over coming decades. Example: 2031 expected to handle 10 million passengers; in 2063 it will handle up to 82 million passengers. It will become our main airport. Kingsford Smith airport can't be expanded to accommodate those projected numbers. I will use the new airport when it opens. The geographic centre of Sydney is now Parramatta so the new airport should be beneficial to many people.

Certainly not ambitious is it. Nothing like the new airports built in the Middle East, Asia or even Mexico City. More like an airport you might find in a mid sized city in Italy or Spain

It is built with tax payers money. Expansions proposed will be built with airport profits. Mascot started out as a clearing in a paddock over 100 years ago , chances are non of us will be here to see what this airport will be 100 years from now.
