Great video! You got them all. Although the intelligence thing is hard to measure. Our westie girl knows so many words, knows our schedule better than we do, makes up her own silly games, tricks me to play those games, has an amazing memory for places and people, and excels at obedience. I would love a border collie, but having a westie that can get by with several short exercise sessions a day is pretty smart. P.S. when people ask me about westies, I always say there is a great you tube channel, westievibes that you should watch! You work so hard, thank you

Intelligent doesn't equal immediately obedient. They probably know what you want them to do well before they decide to do it. (3 Westies in 21 years) my youngest male has figured out how to dpudll open a sprung gate, next to lift a latch with ihis snout while pulling said gate open and now pulling against a rubber strap holding the gate closed and squeezing out. Not to escape but to join me and to show what he can do. The part that breaks my heàrt is when he immediately goes back up the steps us and returns to his fenced in area when I acknowledge him and ask him nicely . Out of true pure love. You can't beat that!

I just LOVE your channel! Thank you so much for all of the various and very informative presentations. I'm on my 5th and 6th Westie, 8 years and 9 months. None of them has shed unless they experienced something frightening to them. None of them have been lap dogs but Iike to be super close and touching me. Friendly doesn't quite cover their excitement when seeing a doggie or people friend. It's more like, "Oh my gosh, where HAVE you been?" with the wagging tail trying to keep up! Spurts of energy with zoomies then a crash. Very intelligent and want to please so they learn quickly. My present puppy Westie, Maisie, is extremely communicative -- different little "grrrs" and "growlies" for whatever she wants or game she's playing. 8:20 is their chosen bedtime and they sit in front of me until I notice and get moving. Their eyes are sparkly and super expressive whether of excitement or just beaming love. An absolutely awesome breed!!!! 🐾🥰💖🐾

What a wonderful video and also true! It would be really neat to find out more about the history of the Westie and how they were bred to ferret out rats originally and the history of why their tails are so strong compared to most dogs (owners and servants used to pull the tail to bring the dog out from the rat hole back in the day). That could be a very interesting video - the history of the dog - if you haven't already done so.

I agree 100% with you. Trasto is very much like Sami. One thing I read a lot before having Trasto was that Westies were very stubborn. After having Trasto for 10 months I disagree. They are not more stubborn that other dogs and you have to ask yourself if sometimes is isn’t the owner the obstinate one😊

Haha, it's true! I took Sami to dog training school eversince he was a puppy and they always told me this: it's not the dog, it's you. Whenever I complained that Sami isn't listening to me and he is blatantly refusing to do what I ask, even though I know he knows what I'm asking... they said "nope, the dog is amazing, you're the problem" 🤣😂 And sure enough, once I started to change my attitude and behavior, he started to listen to me and now we are practically a team. I'm glad you are getting along well with Trasto, it means you're doing a great job with him! 👏

I guess you could train the stubbornness out of your Westie, but every westie we've had is stubborn as hell. They can do all the obedience commands when THEY want.

I’m new to your channel and love it! Excellent on so many levels. Bravo! We have been blessed with two Westies in past 16 years. Both were rescues (each at least five when we got them) and both came with a ton of challenges, including skin allergies, phobias, and orthopedic problems. Our second, Jax, passed away three weeks ago. We’re considering getting a puppy this time, which is a hard decision since we love bringing a rescue into our hearts and homes. I’d love to learn more about your first few months with Sami-the training, figuring out what food to feed him, how you socialized him (with other animals and humans) and more about how you handle his skin problems, since that was always a major issue with both of our Westies. Thank you for the fantastic channel!!

I believe the breed is strong and many characteristics belong to all westies. but everyone is different. Mine is less playful than yours, only in a group of his favorite friends (4) does he run and play in nature. At home he's a "potato" he likes cuddles and....eating but I tend to measure my food because I like it slim! He has many aspects that you list as positive, and I love him very much. Yours has a very funny and expressive face, mine too, sometimes it makes me laugh so much! because he makes funny faces. Hi Allegra

You should also create a little den for your Westie to hide. Could be as simple as a chair in a corner, with 2 towels draped over it so it forms a cube. Westies LOVE a dark, cozy spot like that. Make it their safe space, don't disturb them when they're in their den.

It is true ! mine too, has a "battered" bed under my bed, sometimes, I don't know why.... he has moments when he stays alone there, he lies down, puts his head against the cover and... Does he sleep? thinks ? are you dreaming? oh Mystery!!!!

My westie seat on my laps when he wants only and a little time. About they are hypoallergenic it's true my daughter had one and her husband and her father they are very allergist, never had problems everything you said true. It's true

My Riley fits most of those traditional Westie traits but sometimes he is a lap dog. We’ll have days where we can cuddle and nap under a blanket or with him resting on my chest for hours and other days where he’ll wiggle right out and go sit on the other end of the couch 😂.

My grandson Zeus is all like this except for one thing: h’s very much afraid of children. My daughter and I believe that before she got him he was mistreated by children. That’s why he’s afraid of them. So you gave good advice. Never let a dog with children unattended. It may cause harm to both of them.🐾❤️🐾❤️

Oh poor little guy! It's possible he has a trauma. I'm sorry. Yeah, kids can be intimidating for a little dog and they can mean well but harm him, then he would have to defend himself and nobody wants that. I hope Zeus can still heal with time and be more comfortable around children 💛

My Sugar was a lap dog but she also loved her independent time. I think she was a mixture. The adjustment from her lack of shedding to my corgi just WOW! 😂

Fun fact: Westies were bred with strong tails that form part of their spine so if someone pulls on their tail it doesn’t hurt or annoy them.

Westies have to be introduced to kids, mine wasn’t around kids much and she would see them as a threat and bite at them but quickly learned that was a no no. Where did you get that beautiful ivory crocheted sweater? I love it. Your Sammy is adorable!❤

Sorry to be greedy with questions. Do you already have a video about food? I’ve heard great things about raw diets but not sure that’s what we’d choose. I’d like to start our new puppy off with the right food. Our other two Westies came to us later in their lives and it was always such a challenge keeping them happy with food. I’d love to know more about what you feed Sami and also what treats you’ve chosen. My apologies if you’ve already covered this. I’ve been going thru all of your videos-loving each one. Again, thank you for such an entertaining and informative channel.

I haven't yet made a video about food but I will! I tried the raw diet with Sami but had to stop after 2 months because he developed struvite crystals in his urine and he had blockages (couldn't pee). The vet thinks it's because of too much protein from the raw diet, which changed the PH of his urine. Just something to be aware of, even though I know this works for many doggos. For this reason I give Sami treats low in protein (12-15%) and a dry food also low in protein that helps with his skin allergies: Hills Derm Complete. I also add home cooked food to his meal, usually cooked veggies (broccoli, pumpkin, carrot, sweet potato) or fresh fruits and rarely a little meat or fish 🙂

I read that Westies are direct descendants of Cairn Terriers. I had a Cairn, and she had all the traits you talked about. Can you also discuss separation anxiety? That was a Cairn trait that you didn't talk about.

Spot on except for the lap dog part. I think that’s kind of a personality thing with Westie s. My Tia loves to sit on my lap or cuddled right next to me when I watch TV. Though when she had had enough she will go off to her own space. She does love people more than other dogs. She we are walking if she sees another dog she will act like she wants to meet the other dog but when we get there she tris to just get the attention of it’s human! Lol

Sprocket & LuCy FirR are so different! Sprocket is like Sami. Just a really chill dude. Likes humans more than dogs, quiet, not a lap dog, but def a snuggle dog. (We snuggle in the couch to watch your videos) Likes kids & other dogs, but loses patience & is done after a while. LuCy FiRr (the Karen dog) is VERY VOCAL. Sharp barks & LOTS of talking (no one cares what you have to say, KAREN). Pushy. Entitled. Excited. She’s super-tiny for a westie. Everyone wants to pick her up & hold her. Not at all aggressive, she will lick your face until you put her down. Being cute is her superpower. My boy westies & girl westies have been very different. I’ve had 2 sets. **LuCy has a neurological disorder called “white dog shaker syndrome” or just “shaker syndrome”. You might want to check it out & do a video on it. If you thought losing a dueclaw was scary, shaker syndrome is 100 times scarier. Regular vets were not at all aware of it. My current vet did a ton of research & connected with universities to find us answers. It looks like LuCy will be on prednisone for life to control the shaking. A different vet (🤬) said “this is the best we can do”. It wasn’t.

Toby is my 16 year old westie bestie. I will disagree about the friendly part. He has always been suspicious of people. He gravitates to women more than men. He doesn't bark at strangers but he won't be touched unless he is ready. He has a great memory and remembers people he has made friendships with even after many months. He is friendly with other animals. He was friendly with a young possum and an armadillo once. Both were wild at the park. He was content to sniff and observe. Very unwestylike.

Our Westie is NOT hypoallergenic ... serious shedder. But we are not as committed to daily brushing, so it's our own fault.

Even once every 2-3 days helps a lot. I recommend the metallic comb, it's really good for pulling out the dead hairs 😃
