Johnny 1426 SMLE for British, M1903 for US, Gewehr 98 for Germany, Gewehr M.95 (Mannlicher 1895) for Austria-Hungary and Ottomans. Italy doesn't have a scout weapon.

They need to make it so the SMLE can chamber a new round without coming out of the scope. The real rifle, unlike most bolt-actions, can have the bolt open and pulled back without hitting your face or blocking the sights. It's the perfect rifle for that playstyle, but sadly DICE doesnt know that :/

I'm sure they do know that, it's in the name of weapon balancing, the sacrifice with the infantry and carbine variants is that you can't as easily make accurate shots at extreme distances because you don't have a scope but you have the advantage of staying ads while cycling the bolt. The marksman version obviously has the reverse pros and cons in the name of balance.

Arctic 1397 Yes but the M95 can rechamber rounds while down the scope. The roles of the SMLE and M95 should have been switched, or make them designed with a similar but different playstyle, like with the M1903 and the Gewehr M98

+SwordBreaker925 as far as I'm aware the M95 has no "sweet spot" meaning it will always take 2 shots to the body to kill with it, so letting you stay scoped while rechambering is how they chose to balance out that particular disadvantage as the SMLE does have a sweetspot albeit quite a small one. Just use the SMLE carbine or infantry, both more effective and satisfying than the marksman imo and better for PTFO.

Arctic 1397 Yes, that's true, but that's my point, that their roles should have been switched, because the SMLE was specifically designed to allow the user to fire and cycle the action without having to lose their sight picture. I dont believe the M95 was designed that way

SwordBreaker925 The SMLE isn't the only bolt of the period that had that feature. The M95 is balanced the way it is because IRL it had quite a high rate of fire for a bolt action since it was straight pull. It was nicknamed "rück zurück" meaning back and forth in German. So for it to have quite a high RoF and one shot kill capability would be OP. Both guns are balanced appropriately with respect to their real life characteristics imo.

The Enfield's fast fire rate comes from it's action: The throw is short, has little rotation, and the raceway is more natural (transition is between pulling/rotating the bolt is smoother). Also when the bolt is up, it doesn't obstruct the shooter's view of the sights. All this allows the shooter to maintain an aiming posture while operating the action. And like a few other bolt action rifles, the handle is close enough to the trigger, where the shooters don't have to let go of the bolt handle and just pull the trigger with their middle finger. The whole system really lends itself well for hitting that 30rpm rate of fire which is pretty crazy for a bolt action rifle.

Your weapon-history videos are very good. They provide a factual context for a game that, although based in history, is neither realistic (unavoidably) nor very authentic. I find that this factual context makes playing the game a more immersive pastime. You deserve to have these videos featured on the Battlefield 1 main screen that is displayed when the game is loaded. I also hope that the series will progress to the vehicles we see in the game; the 'rhomboid' tanks have a particularly interesting development story. Thanks.

I'm a Canadian army reservist that works closely with the Canadian Rangers in the Artic and we still have to train on the Lee Enfield (however we still use a lot of Mark 3s with some stolen parts from later variants) it's awesome knowing the history behind the weapon we still get to use!

I have an ex WW2 Enfield that used to be my great grandfathers, The wood on it has been cut down at The front as it was regulation after The war. But just picking it up you get a sense of how reliable it would be as it has a massive heavy bolt that slides smoothly and just feels alround nice. Amazing Rifle

The Lee-Enfield is actually the first rifle I ever shot and it is still by far my favourite out of all the ones I've used. There is just something so satisfying about pulling back the bolt and re-chambering a round.

I've seen Lawrence's rifle at the Imperial War Museum, and as I recall, there were several notches cut into the stock by Lawrence. These obviously denoted kills, but I think he stopped doing this due to his distaste of killing.

The Lee Enfield's fire rate was also assisted by the fact that it's handle and bolt-length was extremely well placed so you didn't have to move your head from the sights while you were working the handle. Basically, it had ridiculously good ergonomics.

Also No.4 Lee Enfield rifles had the "Holland & Holland" gunsmith treatment and the end result was perhaps the best sniper rifle of World War II . . . I still use one of these No.4 Lee Enfield rifles that has had a "Stirling" conversion to .308 for dear stalking; so accurate !

James Lee did make a rifle before the Metford, the .45 Us Lee rifle, used by the US Navy during the 1890s, known as a "Straight bolt" weapon, like the Gewher 95, and naval men hated this straight bolt, and replaced it with the Krag Jørgenson.

The .303 British round and the Lee Metford were both designed for black powder, and both had to be redesigned when the French issued the pioneering M1886 Lebel Rifle. The switch to smokeless powder necessitated a switch to a different rifling dimension, but RSAF Enfield apparently botched the sights, and never quite fixed the accuracy problems they created at close range. The last variant- No . 4 Rifle- had a sight system that actually made the rifle phenomenonally accurate at long range, and upgraded models were converted to the first true sniper rifles in 1942. At close to short range its accuracy lagged most of its contemporaries, and the short carbines were virtually unshootable because of lousy ballistics.

wonderful video. i was going to inform you that there was one key fact left out and that is the british high command was looking for a replacement for the Enfield leading up to world war 1. because they didnt think the rifle met their expectations. they began to pull what the Americans and Sweden had done and make their own version if the mauser, but the outbreak of world war 1 led to development processes to stop and the Enfield was given a second chance. the rest is history

The Lee Enfield has the distinction of the last bolt action rifle used as a primary infantry rifle by a major European army. The British Army did not adopt the FN FAL self loading rifle until 1957, which meant that their units fielded the SMLE in the Korean War, the Malayan Emergency, the Mau-Mau War, and finally in the Suez Campaign. Indian and Pakistani second line forces used the rifle during their 1965 and 1971 wars, and the police and paramilitary forces are still equipped with the weapon (making a heroic stand with police against AK47 armed terrorists in the 2008 Mumbai terror massacre). Various African police forces retain the rifle as well as wilderness rangers and militias.

They're a popular surplus rifle to buy in the United States and also make a great hunting rifle. I own a couple of them myself including one made in 1916. I'd say it's one of the best military bolt action rifles you can get under $500 USD.

i used to own an enfield 4 mk2 re-chambered in .308 and holy god it was a beast but the brass butt-plate hurt like hell. it had the detachable 10rd magazine, half stock not the full length wood stock shown here that runs the length of the barrel, and a heavier bull barrel fitted. lovely gun but because of the receiver design it was impossible to put any modern sight rails on without drilling the barrel

The last lee Enfield rifle used by the British army was the l42a1 which was the no.4 mark 1 (T) that was converted to the NATO 7.62 Cartridge it served up until the late 80's early 90's.

the no.4 mk* is called a star, not aterisk. normally the star meant it was a lend lease rifle from Long Branch (Canada), or Savage (USA). the UK could not provide enough rifles to the soldiers during the war, so they contracted out to meet demands. the only snipers designated for the Enfields had a T or TR on the side of the receiver. the Savage Enfield had U.S. property stamped on receiver. just a bit more history for everyone

One of my favourite quotes about the Enfield comes from a Dutch general during the First World War; 'if you want a marksman's rifle, get a German rifle. If you want a hunting rifle, get an American rifle, if you want a battle rifle get a British rifle.

Great video. I love these weapon history videos you're doing; especially this one. Of all the Enfields, the No. 1 MKIII is my favorite. It looks badass and truly was the best bolt action of WW1 and WW2. The Brits hit a huge homerun with this rifle. I've shot one before and it was a joy. The .303 British caliber is interesting to shoot and the Enfield action is so smooth to operate. I'm gonna finally be buying an SMLE of my own here soon. I'll most likely get both an Enfield SMLE and Ishapore 2A1 (shoots 7.62 NATO). Can't wait.

The T.E. Lawrence rifle is my absolute favorite to use in BF1, as it's the only skin with real history behind it. For anyone interested in Lawrence of Arabia, be sure to watch the 1962 film "Lawrence of Arabia" starring Peter O'Toole. It's a classic movie that is also fairly historically accurate. I have two No.1Mk.3's a No.4mk1, No.5mk1. Canadian rangers are retiring it in favor of Sako rifles specifically designed for the conditions they're in.

Great video, oh btw, the Enfield part of the name doesn't actual come from the factory, it comes from the rifling. Most British rifles before this time used a system of naming where the first part of the name is the weapons action, and the second is the type of rifling. For example the Martini Henry has a Martini style action and a Henry style rifling. The Lee Metford is a Lee bolt action with Metford rifling, or the Snider Enfield rifles have a Snider action and an Enfield rifling.

There's a castle in Ontario Canada and it has a Martini Henry... Madsen, Lewis Gun and also a SMLE it... Casa Loma is the churches name if you want to search it :)

The canadian ranger rifle is being replaced by a Tikka now. And the springfield 1903 is pretty much a mauser copy, so much that they had to paid royalties to mauser.
