If you were born into a simulated world, how would you know it was a simulation? That it was a computer program created by someone for reasons unknown, but because it is the only reality you’ve ever known, all the code and the framework remains safely covered by the grand illusion of an entire universe before you... Well an existential crisis (in my experience anyway) is exactly what happens when all that code and framework become visible!
Because it’s as if the event that sparks this crisis acts like a “glitch in the Matrix”. Be it a sudden and close bereavement. A near death experience. Losing everything we own. Something that hits our perception like a freight train! Wrenching our eyes open to a stark reality, a reality that has always been there but we were blissfully ignorant of, that life isn’t what we thought it was. In it’s presence our existing ideas, concepts and beliefs can crumble! The things we once took strength from can suddenly seem very fragile. Plans for the future we always championed can quickly feel irrelevant. And all that we regularly stressed and worried ourselves so severely over can instantly slip into triviality.
It’s hard trying to get on in life once this happens, because for everyone else still occupied by the illusion nothing has changed; except us of course. And so we are still forever pressured by people and the world to “play the game”. Even though we no longer perceive any real gain or benefit by doing so. As purpose and meaning can appear completely vacant in our lives as we struggle to feel the same motivation and sense of reward from activities and adventures that we once did. My Mother said after my Father died that it was as if all the colour faded out of the world along with him. That we go from a bright and warm place that seems to offer so much fun and excitement, to a state of bleak emptiness and disinterest... A life that yesterday had an answer for everything, turning into to a life today that has nothing but unanswered questions.
And so for me it’s not so much about if we were born into a simulated world, how would we know it was a simulation? Rather I find myself asking, that once we did know it was a simulation, once we did see all the code and the framework, what would we do actually about it?
Best wishes everyone...
