I don't post many songs, but the other day sat out in the late summer/early autumn sunshine I found myself singing this old favourite and I thought why not? It's one of the best by Robert Burns, and sums up this crossover point in the seasons better than anything I've ever heard.
More often known as "Westlin Winds", Burns originally called it simply "Composed in August", and I quite like the simplicity of that title, it says a lot more than it seems to once you start thinking about it.
Of course I owe a lot here to the version recorded by the incomparable Dick Gaughan. He is without a doubt one of my most significant musical influences, and I rarely pick up a guitar without finding a turn or phrase that came from his playing.
