OMG! Since this video is seven years old, you probably won’t read this comment! But I couldn’t resist! I was a locomotive engineer for southern pacific hired in 1963! I was a regular on the west side as a fireman, and then, as an engineer, cut it off the extra board frequently! Love the SD9s! Worked all over the Oregon division! The Westsider in those days ran from Portland to Albany and on to Eugene. In the early days, they were still running on train orders I probably worked on the 4433!

I worked another S.P. 'Westside' out of Tracy, CA. It was a branch line from Tracy to Fresno, west of the SP mainline following highway 99 south. I worked the Westside Hauler quite often in the 70's. Worked the melon jobs in Firebaugh & Mendota, too. Hello to any former Southern Pacific employees...

Nope. Those are considered ample warning by the FRA, but only if they were on the locomotive prior to the ditch light rule. This does not include rotary beacons on top of the cab, though. Those are mostly used these days to show when a unit is operating with remote control.

@generationll The main spotting difference is that GP9's are four-axle units, these are 6. Internally, they are pretty much the same. Both models were rebuilt by Southern Pacific to be 1750 HP with new air filters. The advantage of the SD9s is that they spread their weight out on six axles instead of four, which means less rail wear and 50% more traction than a GP9.

@stuartadamsrailfanningvideos4 жыл бұрын
@@trainsontape6531 Yes, PNWR 1854 is still around. Unfortunately, PNWR 1854 is to be retired on December 31st, 2020. PNWR 1201 (SW9) was retired and moved to the Albany and Eastern Railroad Company (AERC) in mid-2020, where it runs in regular freight service and pulls excursion trains. PNWR 1803 (GP9) was retired and was moved to the Olympia and Beltmore Railroad (O&B), a fellow Genesee and Wyoming line in Olympia, Washington, in late 2019 or early 2020. PNWR 1801 (GP9), PNWR 1501 (SD7), PNWR 1852 (SD9), and PNWR 1854 (SD9) are all being retired on December 31st, 2020. They are being replaced by PNWR 2152 (GP38-2), and PNWR 2155 (GP38-2). LLW 4364 (SD9) is now AERC 5399 (SD9). The PNWR painted unit is a GP39-2 that still runs today. The SDP40F-2 was sold several years to a preservation group that runs it in excursion service at the Nevada State Railroad Museum (NSRM) near Carson City, Nevada.

I would've thought that was a former ATSF former "maersk" because Maersk hit up BNSF and asked if they could borrow a few units for advertising purpose, so they used the ATSF paint scheme but changed the colors a bit and put the Maersk name. (Maybe it did belong to amtrak at one point but that's why it's in "Maersk" paint now)

bugsaliven75 The only railroad to have SDP40F’s was AmTrak, but when EMD came out with the F40PH and GE with the P30CH, the SDP40F’s weren’t needed, and this one is the only to be saved from the scrapper’s torch

Amtrak traded 18 of the SDP40F's to Santa Fe for a bunch of switchers, The one in this video is an ex-Santa Fe (Re-designated) SDF40-2 with the notch nose modification, It along with 2 or 3 other SF engines were painted in Maersk paint scheme for photo ops and such. This one never got painted back to Santa Fe colors.

That engine was stored at Brooklyn roundhouse in Portland Oregon. When it was torn down, the engine was stored in an industrial spur in northwest Portland until 2014, when it was moved to Ogden Utah. Where it is currently stored at Ogden union station. There is a possibility for it to eventually move back to Oregon. As far as I know it is no longer operational

Dave, an SD9 on its own should be okay, it's got a short enough wheelbase. It might look odd on such tight curves but it will operate.

what gauge are you going to be using
@markschroeder25784 жыл бұрын
I'm assuming you're modeling in HO scale. Better make the minimum radius 22", which 6 axle locomotives find comfortable. If you can only do 18" radius I would rather use GP9s as they will take the sharper curves better.

@railsetc10 жыл бұрын
No, it is the Amtrak model. The story: Amtrak traded them all out in favor of F40PHs. Santa Fe bought them and had the front walkways added.

if you have rotating lights do you still need ditchlights?
@markschroeder25784 жыл бұрын
According to that federal law enacted in 1992, locomotives must have some form of "alerting lights" on them. The Mars light or Pyle-National Gyralight will meet this requirement. So will ditch lights but your not required to have both, just one or the other. Incidentally road units (locomotives) are only required to have alerting lights on the front end but switching units are required to have them on both ends.
