I had not known that, and in fact I remember some History Channel doc on early railroads that claimed the term cane from some new type of automatic oil dripper for lubricating trains, that was heavily copied by others. Anyway, I will take your explanation over that channel every time ;) Also, I've watched hundreds of Westerns for over 60 years, and read dozens of books... But never heard of Texas Fever. Fascinating.
