My notes: What were the causes and effects of the settlement of the West? - Many people were moving west to be independent and develop self sufficiency ○ Encouraged by railroads and homestead acts ○ Brought lots of cattle ○ Railroads built in west gave rise to cattle farming ○ Cowboys drive masses of cattle, but ended by barbed wire fences - Sodubsters - homesteaders ○ Some bought land from railroad companies ○ Many small farms folded bc they did not have machinery - Frederick Jackson turner argues the closing of the frontier was a cause of concern ○ Americans were always moving west ○ Closing it would stop the release of America's discontent ○ Frontier was a fresh start and leveled class and social hierarchies - Indians had been forced to move to the Oklahoma territory ○ After mass migration happened, the government tried to get rid of the Indian "problem" ○ Government developed reservation system - Indians were assigned to live on tracts of lands with strict boundaries ○ Indians made their lives around following buffalo herds but Americans killed the buffalo ○ Several indian peoples resisted this movement of assimlation ○ Sioux wars - Sioux fought American army so the government made more treaties to restrict them ○ When gold was discovered on their lands it was impossible to keep Americans away ○ Indian Appropriation Act - officially ended federal recognition of the sovereignty of Indian nations and nullified all treaties ○ Ended up with battle but Indians lost ○ This all forced Indians to do what the government said ○ Dawes Act - federal government abandoned reservation system and divided lands for Indians to farm § Allowed Indians to become citizens as long as they settled there and assimilated to the culture ○ Assimilation movement - western education, leave Indian cultures behind, Christianization ○ One final decisive resistance - ghost dance movement § Idea was if Indians participated in this ritual, their ancestors would return and drive out the White man § US army tried to disarm a group of indians at Wounded Knee § Killed 200 women and children

Hey Heimler, great videos. Quick note, I'd recommend refraining from the term "Indian" and instead, I'd recommend you use "Indigenous populations" or refer to these populations by their specific tribes or native nation.

He responded to this in another video, saying the natives he has met wished to be referred to as "Indians"

I think it should also be noted that the ghost dance movement was also misinterpreted by the united states government as an uprising, take this with a grain of salt though as i'm still a student and dont have all my info fully confirmed so i may be wrong

@heimlershistory2 жыл бұрын
Well that’s true. I only say “Indians” because that’s what the indigenous people I’ve met call themselves…
@wistfulgraph11 ай бұрын
indigenous isn’t a proper noun. Its just an adjective to describe Indians. There are plenty of indigenous peoples in the world that aren’t Indians. And also yes I’ve heard that Indians would rather be called “Indians” than “native americans” because they don’t want to use a term that categorizes them as “American.” That’s at least what i’ve heard don’t know if that’s the reason why.
