Nice review and demo (as always). After playing around for a few hours (uaing a M+ in controler mode, M32 and Jam) I'm very happy with it despite not getting through the presets yet! One feature I would have liked to have would have been the ability to move beyond the single octave of keys / pads that respond, in that, it would be cool if you could select rows of samples in the editor that shift octave by moving up and down the keyboard (the other sample rows being fixed in octave). Just to explore dffierent harmonics by some samples / instruments changing octave relative to each other. Liking the idea of dragging and dropping my own samples! Thanks again for an informative vid and keep up the good work!

Having said this, the 1 octave range means playbox works really well with the Maschine Jam 8x8 grid with slick control of parameters with the touch strips :)

That would’ve been a super cool feature. I wouldn’t be surprised if this plug-in doesn’t take on a much bigger role and receive updates over time. I’m not sure they realized how wide spread this tech could be, but maybe they do. It really is a genius workflow design.

Absolute banger and amazing video, there is a really valuable content here! 2 quick questions: is there any short way you could describe how you create those vocal fills/transition over the song, like the one you mention as well? Like, could you use Playbox to do that to such extent, randomizing your same vocal sample? Also, is the intro yours? Sounds SICK!

Thanks so much Francesco! I'm actually going to make a video about how to do those vocal transitions. Hopefully I'll have it up by Sunday. If not it will be Monday at the latest :) I knew people would have questions on that and I just couldn't go into it or the video was going to be painfully long. I promise I'll go into specific detail though. As for the intro. Yep that's my beat that I made just for the intro. I actually had made about 75% of a video on how I made that intro music... and then accidentally deleted the video file when I was clearing up space on my hard drivelol. I haven't slept in two days... I haven't been this inspired by a VST in since I bought MASCHINE 10 Years Ago. Wait till you realize how easy it is to create your own chords, or drag in your own samples and midi info. It is absolutely outstanding. It is so well curated. I'd love to meet the team behind the design. Some of these samples maybe nothing but more than samples from their enormous library. It goes to show you the possibilities that many of us weren't even aware could be achieved with only stacking these types of textures and sound design. What will set this plugin from everything else in this genre of VST's would be.... EXPANSIONS! Enjoy... I'm going to play with my Playbox.

Really digging this. I've recently transitioned from Reaper on a low spec intel Sandy Bridge i7 Win10 pro desktop PC to Studio One Sphere on a personally refurbished and hot rodded intel i7 4770 iMac. As formerly a more Heavy/Punk/Hardcore performing artist who's experience started on tape? My first DAW was actually a cracked PC copy of CoolEdit Pro/aka Adobe Audition! Ha! Anyway, after tooling around with Spitfire Audio's freeware with a proper MIDI keyboard during the pandemic? I'm hooked. NI's Kontact looks like the logical next step, although I obviously will need to invest in some HDD mass storage drives for the sample libraries. Great content BTW. Looking forward to more. Cheers!

NI’s Kontakt instruments are amazing, but a lot of other companies, both big and small, make Kontakt instruments. Honestly, if I’m not playing live guitar, bass, or drums, 90% of the instrumentation I use comes from Kontakt plug-ins. :)

Great question. Without having a Mikro in front of me I really can’t say. I gave mine to a friend a few years ago and honestly I regret it all the time. I would imagine that it’s mapped in a functional way, but I’m so used to the rotary knobs at the top of the MK3 and the Plus that I’m not sure how they would do it on the Mikro. :/ I do know the more inexpensive keyboard options like the A series and the M32 have rotary knobs if it’s a feature you’re missing and you don’t want to make a big cash investment into a new machine upgrade or something. Those keyboards are dope and I don’t know why more people don’t use them. ✌️

When bringing in your own samples, I assume you'd want to use short one-shots? How would Playbox handle it if you brought in samples with longer phrases, or even like 10 second melodic loops samples?

When I tested that out I found that it was still just using the characteristics rather than the length of the sample. it was very cool and interesting.

I really don’t know the answer to that. It hadn’t presented itself as a problem for me so I hadn’t even thought about it. I suppose you’d solo the layers, bounce them to separate tracks, and mix that way. :/

Hey, if you go to the Samples Page, you'll see Vol, Pan and Octave buttons top right in the Interface. Click on Vol to change the volume for each cube individually.

I'm still confused. I clicked on the volume icon but how do you choose which sample you want to turn down. What an odd way to do this. Why not just have a MIX page? When I click the VOLUME it does change but how do I assign it to the sample I want to turn down?

Please take this suggestion... this is a really unintuitive way to do something so simple and necessary. It's seems really crazy to have thought this was a good approach to such a cool plugin. In a perfect world everyone would draw inspiration from output lol. They have seriously created some of the most brilliant user interfaces of all-time. I wish everyone would rip them off lol. The only series of (instrument) plug-ins that have come close for me in terms of versatility while still being easy to use are Native’s Play Series Instruments.

I just believe a lot of old school producers (I'm one of them) feel like these tools is straight up cheating But at the same time these tools is like paying some dude to come thru and play some shit on the guitar or keys. That's how some of the big producers used to get "sounds" and small timers ain't had that type of money so they automatically was limited to either learning how to play mad instruments or just use what they could afford. Neither one of them is for everyone and it shouldn't mean u can't be a producer! I respect ppl thats really dedicated to creating everything from scratch but me I don't have that time And I don't care about that shit.
