Wetherspoons Fish and Chips Review - Cost Vs Quality - is it a Trade Off?

Fish and Chips, Wetherspoons both a Great British favourite. We all love amazing fish and chips and we all love Wetherspoons for their price, we love cheap food and drink, but we also like quality. The big question is, can Spoons offer both, it certainly offered an alcoholic drink in the price. Well here's my review of Wetherspoons Fish and Chips proper Pub Grub.

I remember me and the missus a few years ago looking to go for an Italian in Southport and I'm thinking that's going to cost me a pretty penny and I said let's just call in Spoons for one beforehand. Ended up looking at the menu on the table and both ordering a burger and chips each with a drink and spending £12 🤣🤣🤪 RESULT.

I knew you'd like this. I've always had a decent meal at 'Spoons.' Once had a steak at the Roebuck in Nottingham town centre and was astonished how good it was for the price!

Yup love a bit of Spoonage. The large breakfast is always my goto the day after the night before. Cheap as chips too the proper ales often £1.99 that's Tenerife price ;-) They get a lot of hate from snobs but they do renovate some lovely old buildings too

It’s not fine dining but you’re not paying fine dining prices I think it’s very fair good value food. So long as your expectations are not above a reasonable level I don’t think you can complain. The refills are outstanding value.

Can't complain for the money at all, the packets surprised me though, Wetherspoons usually have little caddies with all the branded sauces, salt and pepper etc in normal bottles.

Lee, I commented previously on a trip to Keswick. Town centre pub, round of drinks for 6 people, £32. Same round in Spoons £16!. Fish and chips are probably one of their worst meals. Top tip - never try the "Christmas Dinner".

Tim Martin the owner is a divisive character but Spoons gives the chance for people to get out and have an affordable meal with a drink or two who wouldn't normally be able to elsewhere. Good video 👏

Lee, I'm old school so I don't eat pub grub, leave the pubs to serving booze, go to proper restaurants for grub. Now, looking at your fish suppers on screen they look like right out of a freezer (correct me if I'm wrong), now here's a true story to finish. I was out in Glasgow for a few sherbets with my mate big Barry one Friday night, now Barry is not called big for no reason, this guy has the appetite of two lumberjacks, so he goes into the chippy to order 2 special fish suppers for us, so he comes out 5 minutes later and says "They're rubbish in there, they've run out of chips so I didn't get you anything ", I said "that's lovely eh ?, so what did you order ?" Barry says "A SINGLE DOLPHIN ". Great video as ever Lee, keep safe buddy.

I haven't been to a Wetherspoons since the start of Covid. Used to go and have the steak deal or the fish deal with a drink, then used to be a Tuesday or Friday, now its every day. Always enjoyed the steak or mixed grill deal but the fish deal was hit and miss, had fish which was nearly all batter but overall its very good value for money and fresh. I would give your meal an 8.5.

We used to pop in to Weatherspoons, pre-Covid, for the odd bowl of chips and glass of wine. It was cheap, and the chips were a decent quantity and quality. It sounds like some branches have cut the portions down a bit, but we haven't been back for ages. Some of the characters in our local one - which is huge - looked like they practically lived in it - they probably spent lockdown in there, oblivious to what was happening!

I was in Wetherspoons in Ripon a couple of weeks ago, The Unicorn and the fish & chips were really good. Never usually have fish & chips in pubs but I was pleasantly surprised, fresh fish, nice batter, nice chips, good peas. Why pay more?

You get what you pay for(mostly) if someone is on a budget its OK ish to eat out but in lidl you can get 4 chunky cod fillets for £2.50(frozen) an entire bag of frozen chips for 70p. A tin of mushy peas for 30p. I think they do curry sauce aswell, all coming to £3.50 ish, 20 mins in the oven probably costs 30p, will easily feed 2-3 people easily and if your on a budget that's what you do, mind the pennies and the pounds mind themselves. It definitely wouldn't cost more than £2 per person for a meal , even the whole tail scampi in lidl is lovely £2 per bag.

Hi Lee! Hiya Angie! What a great Vlog visiting Wetherspoons. I do think it depends on which one you visit. We have two in Bury and both are poor for keeping their food warm in time to serve it to you. I can’t disagree on the amount of food you get though. I have had so many breakfasts and find for the price it’s decent £.4.99 for a traditional and £5.99 for a big breakfast. It’s great for family meals anyway. My son used to eat a big breakfast and there was never anything left. Clean plate. As to the fish. I’d have to go for scampi. It’s worth having too. I’m not a huge fan of their chips and you might get a lot depending again on where you are. They used to have a gorgeous mushroom carbonara on their menu served with garlic ciabatta which was beautiful. I’d have it every week today If they still served it today. All of your food looked mouth watering. Curry sauce especially. Saw you ate the lot except the bread. Solid 8.5 for me Top tip avoid The Robert Peel and The Arts Picture House at all costs - unable to serve their meals hot

Hello Lee and Angie I quite like spoons and agree what you get can vary from branch to branch, thought your fish and chips looked very good and its usually tasty too. Our recent trip to spoons we ordered burgers with onion rings and chips and dips, the staff member came over and said all the burgers were sold out and said choose anything else on the menu at no extra cost so we chose the best sirloin steaks on the menu and to be fair it was really good and cooked how we asked maybe a few more chips would be nice. But the prices for drinks are amazing and its great quality coffee. Good vlog Lee and angie.

Very impressed. The Peas and Curry Sauce were a nice and thick consistency just the way I like it and the fish looked nice and white. Absolutely VFM and I'll give it a solid 9.

Y’Know??? I kinda like a ‘spoons. It is what it is but they have always been great (with the “It is what it is” caveat); The food has always been edible and tasty, service friendly and quick, good range of drinks and for this history/architecture Nerd, the buildings they are saving and breathing new life into is superb. Prior to the pandemic, there was a group of us that would meet up at a ‘spoons for a Sunday Brekkie…It was really great!!! I know they get a bit of a poor reputation with images of the “Benidorm MadgeMobiles” parked up outside and somewhat other dubious and sportswear wearing Patrons outside having a gasper; but overlook this, they really are alright. Oh! And lovely to see the lovely Ange again!

I think pubs pay more tax on food and drink than supermarkets, mate. I think that's why they're more expensive 🤔 also, the salt and pepper used to be in shakers. However, due to covid and cross-contamination, they reverted to sachets.

Love 'Spoons. Good food and excellent value! Fish and Chips a solid 8 from me. And I agree, restaurant prices have really increased. Turkish platter for 2 and soft drinks came to £60 a few days ago, would have been less than £40 before covid. But I'm noticed take away prices have almost doubled during that time too.

We complained about bread being hard and they changed it but the reason is - it’s because the meal is out and kept warm under the heat lamps and if it’s there too long the bread goes hard Regards and many thanks for all the vlogs Howard

The wife and her sister when shopping in Ealing /London buy the fish and chips at Weatherspoon’s. They have had no complaints. I avoid Pubs etc for fish and frozen chips. But if you out and about like I was up the Charing Cross Road London last week 1515, with my son popped in to Weatherspoon’s and got an average feed ie a curry plus a drink for little money. Typical son, I will get that, you can get the next one. Sitting across from us was a family of five tucking in. You did come to mind Lee as we walked towards Leicester Square Tube, heading West. Just across the road , that lovely over priced steak house again with frozen chips etc etc . Ps a few years back, the Irish relations were over with us in Darlington, they could not understand the Weatherspoon’s prices. Now they have Weatherspoon’s in Dublin

Last month I went to The Full House Wetherspoons in Hemel Hempstead and had fish and chips there. Didn't oder curry sauce with mine and had garden peas instead of mushy peas. I was quite impressed with it, though the peas were a bit cold!! Maybe next time I'll have mushy peas instead. While I was eating there, I was thinking of you doing your food vlogs on fish and chips and was going to reccommend Wetherspoons to you!! Took a photo of what was on my plate though. On the whole, I think Wetherspoons is good value for money and would definitely eat there again. Another great video, as always 🙂

I think that was great value for the money. I may have asked for the bread to be replaced or even toasted if i was extra hungry but hey! Just a bit of bread. All that food with a premium drink and not forgetting the tartare sauce (My fave) for just £8.65. Its a winner and an easy 9 for me.

I think the food in Spoons (we call them that too 🙂) is generally quite good, particularly for the price. The curries, steak and full English breakfasts are the standouts although I had some fried chicken at a Spoons in Walsall yesterday which was good too. The coating was golden and crunchy and the chicken was juicy. The chips were a bit disappointing however as they went cold very quickly.

I love Wetherspoons because they are consistent (all bought in and microwaved I saw the kitchen) I found the fish and chips crap, looked like a Birds eye box job. Curry Night Is what I used to like but since the ditched the Flaming Dragon curry I've not bothered. Not too hot but tasted nice. Bring back the Flaming dragon! Good Vid Lee. I have to say Lee, that this effort from Wetherspoons, wasn't quite as bad as i thought it was going to be. The first thing that impressed me the most when your meal arrived, was that battered fish on your plate. That fish was a freshly battered, and deep fried Cod Fish Fillet. And although the Chips were frozen, they looked like deep fried McCain Triple Cooked Gastro Chips to me. Both the Mushy Peas, and Curry Sauce, looked very nice... But oh dear!, when you pay extra for fresh sliced Bread & Lurpak Butter... and they serve you old dry bread, then that's just not on mate. I know you said you didn't want to get it replaced, but i'd have returned it in a heartbeat... Dry bread like this, should only have been used by them, when they're actually making Toast, or Fried Bread, and it doesn't need to be soft anyway. So unfortunately they've actually dropped the ball on this occasion i'm afraid Lee... But for a sit down meal deal with a drink, it's amazing value for money really... But don't knock the alcohol free Lager my friend, those of us that are driving... or have medical restrictions for alcohol intake... or possibly even for religious reasons, will welcome these 0.0% alcohol free Beers... Lagers... or even Guinness 0.0% Draught Stout. But for sheer value for money, and mostly quality menu items... i'll give it a solid 8/10... Keep up the good work my friend... Cheers Lee. 🍺

I have heard the only thing made freshly at good old “spoons” is the pizzas. The curries are quite nice though! The best fish and chip shop IMO is Dawson’s in Kirkham, Lancashire. I live just up the road from it and can tell you it’s banging! Always a huge que to get in. If your ever up this way Lee give it a try! Great videos as always 😊

Excellent value……..didn’t touch, the tartare sauce and lemon wedge. Curry sauce don’t go with fish n chips,in my book. But, that’s just my opinion. A very decent 8. Will have to look for this zero Stella stuff. A steady 8. Going up to Ullapool, next week. So be having local caught haddock. Keep up,the good work.

The fish looked over cooked. Breaking into fibres, not flakes. Surprised you liked it. The chips didn’t look like chip shop chips, but fair enough, the chips have to match other meals like the steak, for example.

I've had Spoonie's fish and chips several times and it's always been perfectly acceptable. The chips they use are McCain so good quality. Their curries are also good, steaks less so. What you forgot to factor in to your experience of Wetherspoons was the cheap booze. I think I saw Abbot Ale advertised at £2.10. At a pub I go to in Hampshire it's £2 dearer.

You can't complain at those prices and the quality is probably above average for the cost, these places take a hit on the food and make their money on drinks.

@@rhosman1000 I was a butcher and know the company that supplied weatherspoons in my area and the steaks/meat was all fresh, no part cooked rubbish like others have stated. Yes it might be cheaper beef as in not aged etc but it's still good quality British beef.
