Man, I saw this with my 60 year old father, who has seen EVERY Godzilla movie. The only Godzilla movies I saw was 2014 Godzilla, King of the monsters and God Vs Kong. As a movie buff..I gave this a 9/10....Only because I never saw the classics. Only reason. I asked my dad what he thought, and he stated with a straight face, "Oh yea, best Godzilla movie ever made. Easily." Godzilla atomic breath....MMAAAAAAAAAAAAANNNNnnnnnnnn........intense. We saw it at EVO entertainment...AVX.

I remember you and Jay gave a REALLY favorable review to the original 1954 uncut Japanese version. MINUS ONE is on par, at least with the intent, with the emotionality of the 54 movie, if not more. Best Godzilla movie ever. Even non Godzilla fans will like this. My mother was sobbing and my friends and I got teary eyed. This is how you make a real Godzilla movie.

Humans almost made me cry. Godzilla made me shiver. 10/10 movie Edit: also while I can see why people didn’t like the build up to the last act, I personally loved it. Right after the godzilla leaves the town after causing so much destruction I just really enjoyed the characters/writing up until that point. Then after that they really delve into the emotions of both the main and side characters after all the action and tenseness in the movie. It’s like the calm before the storm and I knew that was the case so I was just sooooo invested with how the movie would end. I think it does a great job making you seriously care a lot about each character in the movie so that at the end you’re completely invested and genuinely hoping they all make it out alive. Plus I think with how much godzilla there is in the first half of the movie it’s definitely okay to take a step back and flesh out your characters more before the final big scene. (damn, the more I really dive into this movie the more I love it)

Godzilla is not in this movie much but he’s always present if that makes sense and not a second is wasted when he’s on screen. The character drama is so compelling I hardly noticed how short his screentime was. This was everything the 2014 film could and should have been

I watched it for the third time yesterday (the first time was 4DX+ScreenX, the second and third times were regular 2D). Some reviews said that it could have been shortened by 15-20 minutes, but as a Japanese person, I don't think any of the scenes were wasted, both contextually and emotionally. If it had been made shorter, we would have had less emotional empathy for the characters, and I think the characters would have been less present. Regarding the quality of the CGI, it is completely misplaced to point out that the slow movements of Godzilla after he comes onto land are awkward. This movement is an homage to the original 1954 Godzilla walking style, which was inspired by the classical Japanese performing art Noh. Godzilla is not just a gigantic lizard, but a god of curse and destruction that contains the angry souls of Japanese soldiers who died in the war, so he walks like it's some kind of ceremony. Saluting Godzilla on the deck of a warship as it sinks into the sea is a sign of respect for the angry spirit that Godzilla inhabits. As older fans know, this may have been somewhat of a mystery to newer audiences. This is also a point where the interpretation differs decisively from Roland Emmerich's giant lizard and the Monsterverse. Another thing about the CGI is the tank scene, which seemed cheap, but the Japanese military tanks of that time actually looked cheap and looked like tin toys, so they recreated that and made it look cheap. It is different from the American M1 tank. In addition, the sound of the fighter jets was also cheap and realistic.

Don't get me wrong I like the way he moves here better. I enjoyed the connection to the original! And also, like I said...I can take 20 minutes out of ANY movie these days, lol. I thought the tanks looked cool although they were very CGI for sure.

Interestingly, you brought up Oppenheimer, and some critics faulted that film for neglecting the Japanese perspective. Forget Barbie; Godzilla Minus One serves as the fitting companion to Oppenheimer, acting as a direct sequel. Beyond Godzilla, the film authentically portrays post-atomic-bomb WWII Japan. The devastation for Japanese citizens is heart-wrenching as they gradually rebuild their lives from the ruins. The most impactful WWII movies about the war with Japan often result from collaborative efforts between the two nations. While Oppenheimer is American-made, Godzilla Minus One is Japanese. Witness what Oppenheimer did to Japan through the lens of Godzilla Minus One.

What really made it good was the editing and scenes. They put you in real situations. They really thought about the details. In most monster movies they just throw you in the fight scenes quickly and get it over with. They don’t let it breathe. With this they let paved it just right and built up tensions in some scenes and also didn’t use too much unnecessary music to give you a warning that something was going to happen. They def made Godzilla more eerie by not showing too much all the time. And his eyes were hella evil! … I agree with you about the the third act (we got the point), but it’s easily overlooked as the whole movie just works great as a whole…. Best Godzilla movie I’ve seen for sure. I need to see it again before it’s theater run ends.

Just got out of theatre, and hands down a great movie and for 15 million dollars only. Story 10/10- Godzilla effects 8.5/10 soundtrack 10/10, it made me pay attention to the story! And more importantly I cared about the people. It was a story about a disgraced man trying to fix his wrongs, a love story and family story and a redemption story and oh yeah Godzilla story as well! Oscar worthy

Despite so many great films released this year like Barbie, Oppenheimer, and Spider-man Across The Spider-verse, this is my favorite film of the year. I wouldn't be surprised if the film gets nominated for Best International Film at the Oscars. If it does, I hope it wins.

*Arnie voice* "DO IT NOW!!!" Haha, love it. So true, I saw it on a regular big screen at the AMC Universal Citywalk Saturday night and already planning to go again to see it in IMAX with my brother when I get to the UK next week. Definitely feels like they said to themselves: what if we made a Godzilla movie but we wrote a script as good as JAWS?! Brilliant storytelling to tie Godzilla to a metaphor for post-war PTSD. An anti-war masterpiece, and definitely one of the best movies I've seen in 2023. Should 100% win the VFX Oscar tbh.

I didn't feel the length of the setup in the third act. I think because it was just setting up all the domino pieces to fall in the final act. I feel like it needed that slow buildup to make that climactic finale to really hit home. Like even the scenes where he's trying to get in touch with the mechanic, I felt like that was totally necessary for obvious reasons. Man, to me the movie just flew by.

Yeah I just saw it tonight. You know, it's interesting. I have a special fondness for Legendary Godzilla, but it's a completely different vibe to this one. The CGI and fight sequences of Legendary are great, absolutely. But the story sucks. The movie wants us to care about these characters and we just don't. But with Minus One, I absolutely care about the characters. They found a way to balance it and make us feel invested in them. Maybe it's because the TOHO Godzilla is a villain technically. With Legendary's Godzilla, there is no sense of danger since Godzilla will save humanity. But in TOHO, who will save humanity from Godzilla?

Godzilla minus One came out from nowhere and is both a critical and audience fave. Maybe the tide is turning and viewers want change. I know you guys mainly love horror genre but glad to see a new wave of horror icons coming up the pipe like Art the Clown and John Carver. New Godzilla film deserves a chance and should be expanded to more theaters and longer run. I heard it will only be a limited run. Might see it again, it was so damn good.

The Godzilla in this was legit vicious, I think that's what was different. If you watch the clip where they show a close up of him stepping down as people are running, you can see the limp bodies of people flying into the air. Also, the scene where we first meet him on the island he literally goes Jurassic Park on those dudes. He's straight up TRYING to kill people, not just doing it passively. That's very different from how Godzilla usually is. It was awesome!

I agree. Would give it an 8/10. That being said, it's in my top 3 of Godzilla movies now. I felt like the acting style was a little over the top at times and it seems like most of the audience at the theatre I was in felt that way. Besides that, I enjoyed almost every second of it. It's a way more psychological take on Godzilla than the other ones who focus more on science. Also Godzilla is scary as sh*t in this one and I'm really happy about that. Always wanted a Godzilla horror movie and while this isn't exactly horror it comes close in certain scenes. The music is haunting and epic and the cinematography is beautiful. I'm glad most people agree it's a great film.

The Classic Godzilla movies are like the old Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday the 13th and Halloween movies. They are extremly enjoyable and fun to watch. They are cheesy fun (cheese is a good thing!). But there are also some serious and dark Godzilla movies from time to time. Like Godzilla 54, Godzilla 84, GMK, Shin Godzilla. I would recommend them to you. But there are really crazy Godzilla movies too. Movies that you should watch when you are drunk, like Godzilla Final Wars. So good, but in a different way! The Movies work so well cause they are made with love. Its just so much fun seeing all these Miniature Buildings, Tanks and Planes are getting destroyed by Godzilla, i prefer that over CGI. The Characters dont take themselves too serious, and are fun to watch. I love the Godzilla movies. The American movies are not that bad, but they just dont have this charme. They are not as enjoyable.

Tge CGI in this movie was seamless so it was way opposite than tye overblown CGI with the Legenderry monster verse. Just saw the new Godzilla X Kong trailer & that movie is looking like a video game. I was spoiled with this movie, so now im not really feeling that movie anymore. I like the realistic feel of this movie

I've been hearing really good things about this one so far. I wouldn't get your hopes up for Shin Godzilla, though. It's about ten minutes of really good monster action, and the rest of the film is a bunch of government committees talking about what's happening endlessly.
