Love this, remember the trains when I was on holiday in Weymouth as a child in the 70s and 80s. Loved seeing the fairground again as well. Very Happy memories.

Came across your video after reading about the tramway on the End of the Line forum. Fascinating to see trains running down the street with the traffic passing. Thank you for braving the elements to record this piece of history, and for sharing with us now.

Bearing in mind how old the video is and how simple the equipment was the results are excellent. Brought back memories for me. Well done!

What lovely weather! The windscreen wipers on the Class 33 are working overtime!

Just got back from Weymouth, the tramway is still in good nick and could be brought back to use with minimal work in my opinion!!

RIP Weymouth Quay Tramway. Closed and now permanently removed by Dorset Council hipster pen-pushers in October 2020.

This seems so bizarre having a full size train run up a road with cars. I loved seeing it.

Still happens here in Bristol (2018) using steam!

Nice video...shame about the weather! Unusual to see a 4-TC on a service boat train.....in my experience they were usually loco-hauled mark 1 stock.

Thanks for posting, great work, what fine machines those 33s were. I walked the tramway last week, I've uploaded a vid if you want to see what it looks like today - still looks OK to me.

There has been talk of using this line again during the Olympics, I think it would be a great idea, as all the line and as far as I know the signalling is still in place. As a very young kid in the mid 1970's, I can remember seeing trains going up the street in weymouth...
@gtaftw215 жыл бұрын
no. network rail declared it out of use in 2007. normal passenger services stopped in the early 90s and there hasnt been a train on it about 10 years or so.

/i wondered how you got trains to the tramway, it's clean across a car park from tha station. The rails are still in situ, just need muck digging out of them with a stick. There's even a signal wasting electricity showing a red aspect where those bamksmen were leaping off the loco.
@Jamfluff14 жыл бұрын
The scene around the railwya has totally changed since then. Doubt youd get a 33 past the shopping outlets,.

Did the Crompton run round the TC at the Quay and haul it back, or was it driven from the unit's cab?
@BilgeProductions8 жыл бұрын
Driven from the TC end. For many years prior to this it was hauled Mk1 stock so did run round at the terminus. Crompton between Weymouth and Bournemouth and ED to Waterloo. In the later years of that method of operation it often carried a headboard west of Bournemouth - which was held in the office at Bournemouth station and to avoid it getting 'lost' up in the smoke only went on and was taken off at the loco change at Bournemouth.

Re-open it as a heritage linefrom the station to the quay. Councils have driven cars out of most seaside towns with park and ride, use a heritage railcar people would soon get used to it .Be great for Olympics.There will be too many cars visiting then anyway. Try parking in Padstow, should bring that line back too.

That must be one Hell of a Job as a Train can't turn when it hits something like a Careless motorist or a Person crossing the road here .Especially going through the Quay at snail Pace.

hey hey Weymouth rocks..kinda..I was secondman/passed fireman @ hither green depot in the 70s and the slimline Crompton diesel was very much in use..maybe it's my screen but 118 is a slimline?
@russellgreen33753 жыл бұрын
33/2's were slim line, 33/1's were normal width fitted with push/pull equipment (hence the pipes on front)

is this line still open?
@professormcgorgeous5 жыл бұрын
Technically yes but the local council voted to have the rails in the road removed. The line has had work done on it but that's probably just a tick box measure.

Andrew Barrett nothing to with H&S but pounds and pence. Foot passenger numbers dwindled on the ferries to the Channel Islands and so this service was withdrawn. The tax payer wasn't willing to support more useful services, so ehy eould they want to support this service?

What on Earth was the point? Passengers could have walked faster. No wonder they discontinued this line - it was ridiculous. It may have had a purpose for freight once. But passengers - just silly.
