Honestly? It's just a tradition. I'm sure all the details are on Wikipedia. The part *I* think is coolest is that they live out their lives in a zoo in the capitol, which means that a lot of people who would never otherwise see a live turkey get to see them! I'm lucky - I live in an area with WILD turkeys, so I've even had them on my roof on occasion, and I get to watch the chicks grow up every year. Turkeys are cool birds! Note: because domesticated turkeys are bred for more meat, most can't fly. But wild ones can actually fly a pretty good distance, and even roost in trees!
