Having a baby after 50: It happened for this couple!

A North Carolina couple had their first baby later in life, and now their decades-long fertility story is inspiring others.
We caught up with mom and dad Susie and Tony Troxler, ages 50 and 62, on how life is going as new parents, what they think about their story going viral, and how they handle some of the responses to their later-in-life pregnancy and birth.
Susie was down to her final embryos, and then, she welcomed her baby girl Lily in September.

@@gabrielleivie4585 - It seems it was her egg, as thy were not trying at the time under a Dr. care. If a woman has not yet reached menopause, the possibility of conception still exists, even if it is exceedingly unlikely.

So much for the myth that fertility "drops" after 35. I think it's mostly to guilt women. While it's up to the parents, I can't fathom a kid at my age at 51 almost 52.

This gives me hope. I got so depressed Because I’m 34 and don’t have any kids. I often worry if I would have the energy. I’m grateful for my freedom but it makes me sad to think that I may not have a lot of time as if I would’ve had if I had a kid at 24 :(. Maybe one day

@@roddma She gave birth due to egg donation. The egg donation industry can be quite exploitative of young women. See the documentary "Eggsploitation." I think you have to be younger than 30 or 32 to donate eggs, thus the eggs of older women are less viable generally. Bc of how exploitative the egg donation and surrogacy industries are of young poor women and mothers, I think it is best for women to conceive their own biological children if they can, or to adopt. This avoids wealthier, whiter, women exploiting poorer women, often of color. For women all over the word, 35 yrs old at delivery is advanced maternal age, and pregnancy after 40 is rare by comparison. Geriatric mothers are the exception, not the rule, and many have had several children at a younger age, which may help.

I was adopted by an older couple. Dad was in his 60's, mom in her 50's. I'm 24 and dad is dead, mom is 80. I don't regret it. Wouldn't change it for the world. Best childhood ever lots of love. I only wish I had more time with my dad.

I’m 29 now and my mom had me at 37, my sister at 40. I’m healthy (well uhh relatively🤣) and I loved having an older mother. She was way more patient than most other children’s mothers. I’m very happy for you!

My dad died at 33. He had me at 27. It just goes to show there are no guarantees in life. Young parents die as do older parents. If you're blessed with a child at an older age then embrace it. I don't have time for people who pigeonhole life events into age groups. Good for them:)

My grandmother had her 7th child at age 52. Her husband was 51. She passed away at age 90 without ever having any health conditions or surgeries. She did not smoke, nor drink. Drank LOTS of water.

The reality is that it is very, very unlikely for a woman to naturally become pregnant at 50. And, what’s more, it is equally unlikely that she can do so using IVF… IVF using your own eggs over 40 has a very low chance of a live birth. Most women of this age in this situation would be advised to have assisted conception treatment using donated eggs from a younger woman in her 20s. Which if you listened closely she had to use a donor egg. Not her biological child. Might as well adopt if you gonna have to do all that. [Of the over 400,000 children in foster care in the U.S., 114,556 cannot be returned to their families and are waiting to be adopted. Among these children, males outnumber females, African American children are disproportionately represented, and over half are 6 years old or older.]

My mother gave birth to me at 19 and died at 34. Young age is no guarantee that parents will see their kids into adulthood. Children should be born to parents who want them and will do what it takes to take good care of them. Being a good parent is the only thing that counts at the end of the day. Having babies is for grown folks of all ages who are capable of doing so.

@@laurymo2163 My mom had to have a hysterectomy when she was only 24 years old but I guess she never lost the desire to have her own child. It was am uphill battle for her not only because of her age but also because she was a single woman. In April of 1990 she purchased a home and began to have home visits with the adoption agency to make sure she was fit and that a child would have a safe place to grow in. I was born late in August and she got the call about me when I was 3 three weeks old. I've been her baby ever since. My adoption was closed and to this day I still have no clue who my biological family is but I still have my mama. Her health started to decline when I was 15 but she's a real fighter and hasn't missed any special moment in my life so far. She even was there when I had my baby in 2019. She's truly my angel on earth. She rescued me and loved me unconditionally since the first day she got me.

I was 55 and my wife was 47 at the time, and our baby was and is healthy and perfect...despite all the smug and sanctimonious "medical experts" who told us we couldn't have kids without a donor egg. After she was born, I was sorely tempted to introduce our little girl to every single one of those one-hundred-percent-proven-wrong naysayers and have her blow raspberries at all of them. Our advice is to get and stay healthy by exercising regularly and watching your diet, and then just go for it. You have more time than you think-naysayers be damned.

I envy the Troxlers'! My wife and I tried to conceive a child, but it was not to be. Mumps had rendered me infertile when I was 12. We were informed of that fact after we went through fertility testing. We decided to adopt, and had a baby boy placed with us when he was 3 months old. He will be 49 in June. Being a daddy was a joy for me - I got up at night to feed him his bottle, change his diaper, give him baths, play with him every chance that I got! Enjoy those moments, because time goes by quicker than we realize, and one day they are moved out and starting life on their own.

Remember that there are grandparents out there who get sole custody of their grandchildren and have to raise them despite being in their 50s or even 60s and they do a good job of it and many times they children turn out to be really amazing adults who don't regret being raised by someone older, they just appreciated the fact they were loved and kept warm.

That is my worry, I am 40, no kids, we are mentally, financially etc. ready 1000 % but I am not sure if my body is for looking after kids 🙄🙄😪😪

My dad’s sister-in-law gave birth to Twins yesterday at 58 years old, my dad’s brother is 64 years old. They have been married for over 30 years and this is their first child or rather their first set of children. They are absolutely thrilled

This is a beautiful story. I sas diagnosed infertile at 13 years old due to trauma. I watched all my friends had 4 or 5 year olds and I was without. Years later after years of begging the universe to "fix me" I had my little girl. Then almost 3 years later my son. I hope that a miracle like mine happens for everyone else who can relate to feeling broken and incomplete.

My mom will be 70 this year. So both of my parents will be in their 70s before I'm 30. I want them to live long healthy lives❤️ Having "older" parents gave me a different perspective on age and what is considered old compared to my peers.

Both of my parents reached 70 before I turned 30. My mom turned 70 a little over a month after my dad passed away. It's horrible having older parents. I've had to help my mom since I was 17 and the caregiving shows no signs of slowing down. When it comes to taking care of one parent and losing the other, I feel like I'm 50 or 60 instead of 30.

Adoption is a wonderful blessing. But the choice of adoption is a personal one. I could never place that on a couple/person if that was not what they wanted over having a bio child. I'm glad to hear you were adopted into a family but again... that was your parents personal choice to do so.

artificial semination is super expensive! ok, larger than a student loans sometimes if you have to keep trying. bEst time to have kids between 21-38 yrs old. cheaper. but at 43 you may be closer to premenopause like i was. nope, i never was able to get pregnant, does 43 plus , its hard to semenate an egg without another 20k help of science. once you old, we old. lol Men are different!! God is Good, they can be 70! and still get a 30 year old pregnant! lool
