Beautiful piece. The beginning and the ending.

Pure composing genius: at 4:58 the composer effortlessly changes the scene to far away and you can hear Barnard's horn from a distance

My school’s chamber choir was learning this piece this semester, but all concerts, recitals and exhibitions are canceled until next term so sadly I won’t get to perform this in our annual winter recital.

This piece was sent to my husbands uncle, Richard Wood, a musician in the prisoner of war camp, who organised a music festival there. He was a friend of Benjamin Britten and organised for a complete orchestra of instruments to be delivered via Red Cross bit by bit. The festival went on for a month and covered all genres of music. Scores were written on tiny pieces of scrap paper and prisoners were taught to play instruments, sometimes for the first time. When Richard died there was a memorial held for him in the Imperial War museum and a choir sang this piece - very moving. Richard (Dick) was imprisoned on his first day as a soldier and spent the entire war in prison. We have many of his letters from that time.

Denise Zygadlo What an incredible piece of history you hold. Not that being a prisoner of war is by any means a blessing, but it seems a lot of good still came out of it.

This was a good performance, however the bottom E flat in the basses at 3:34 was almost inaudible. This didn't really change much, as it's certainly not the most important part of the piece, but it would've made this slightly better in my opinion. I'm not sure if this is how it was intended, but the part after this was a fair bit faster than when the choir I'm in performed it. I think it would've been better to do it just slightly slower than it was done here for a bit more clarity of consonants
