March 6, 2015 - Brooklyn-based, Punch Brothers, performed live in front of a sold-out crowd at Boston’s House of Blues. The all-star quintet performed a number of tracks from their fourth full-length album, The Phosphorescent Blues (released earlier this year), as well as fan-favorites ("Rye Whiskey”) and outstanding covers (Radiohead’s "Kid A”).
“Passepied" (Claude DeBussy cover) is featured on The Phosphorescent Blues.
Chris Thile (mandolin)
Gabe Witcher (violin)
Chris Eldridge (guitar)
Paul Kowert (bass)
Noam Pikelny (banjo)

I wish everyone cheered just as enthusiastically as the audience did when they heard Claude Debussy

1:20 Jesus your bass player has a kickass sense of dynamics. That brief punch of the bass is soft but intense enough to bump the entire melody up, this piece has a real tension to me and I love that addition.

I feel like Debussy would totally approve of this. How could he not? This is a fantastic version.

For me it goes beyond the original, since it adds a huge amount of sound colors to the piece while preserving its whole essence. This is a quite unique musical jewel.

@@Ailanto Absolutely. I like this even better than their breathtaking version of the Bach Brandenburg 3 finale. This is further away from the original, as you said. The bass player just KILLED it with those dancing arpeggios.

I really like these guys' bluegrass tunes, but I truly love their classical arrangements. I've been to many orchestral and chamber performances, but their playing has to rank among the most joyous. I especially love their Bach arrangements.

I played this for piano back in college and have watched a lot of Rick Beatto lately. Went looking for some similar style analysis of this piece - because why not? - and saw the Punch Brothers doing essentially a bluegrass arrangement. 🤯🤯🤯 ❤️❤️❤️

I mean it's not even bluegrass. Its just pure classical as every single note is identical with the original and flawlessly arranged for the strengths of each instrument. There are accomplished professional classical musicians and ensembles who can't achieve this kind of precision and unity.
