March 1, 2018 - Egan has inspired multiple generations of musicians and helped define the sound of Irish music today. As a composer, he was behind the soundtrack for the award-winning film The Brothers McMullen, co-wrote Sarah McLachlan’s breakout hit, “Weep Not for the Memories,” and has scored numerous documentaries and indie films since. As a bandleader, Solas has been the pre-eminent Irish-American band of their generation for the past 20 years, continuously renewing Irish music with fresh ideas. In 2018, Seamus launched his latest musical creation teaming up with a stellar group of musicians - Moira Smiley, Kyle Sanna, and Owen Marshall.

I've had journey to get here tbh. The deeper I look the more I find. The deeper I look the better the music sounds. Everything else degrades. Music ages better than fine wine.

So, so glad I found this. I met Seamus, Winnie, Mick and Eamon in Pitlotchry, Scotland years ago. Meeting and seeing Solas is still a highlight of my life. As a musician Seamus is an incredible inspiration to me. I am so glad he is still creating wonderful music. So much talent.

As I went out walking, one morning in May to view the green meadows and to watch the lambs play two lovers were talking and the young girl did say “Young man, you’ve grown cold-hearted, have you led me astray?” He replied: “I have courted you many days and long nights And you often times told me that you would be my wife Oh, if you had proved loyal and told to me your mind This very night you would be rolling in these arms of mine And now, oh my fair one, sure I’m not to blame No I’m not the beginning or the end of your shame For you went with another and you left me far behind Did I ever once think love that you’d prove so unkind? Oh and you think on your your love, and I’ll think on mine And you choose the red rose, and I’ll choose the thyme Oh the lilies they wither and the (thyme/time) it goes so soon Sure the red rose of summer, it flourishes in June. So farewell to Ireland, you know we must part And fare you well my darling since you’ve broken my heart. With your false lies and stories, oh you’ve left me far behind Did I ever once think, love, that you’d prove so unkind.” The song is taken from a recording of Irish Traveller, Mary McGrath of Wexford, made by Tom Munnelly in the 1970s. (Her surname is pronounced Muh Grar, it's the standard Irish pronunciation rather than Muh Grath as Moira says it). It was reissued on a CD in 2008, "Songs of the Irish Travellers", but hard to find today (2022). I have only heard the first two verses of the original, but it's clear that Moira has changed a few words here and there. Mary McGrath's version starts like this: Oh, as I went out walking, one morning in May for to view those green meadows and to watch those lambs play true lovers was talking and the fair maid did say “Now, young man, you’re false-hearted, have you led me astray?” “Many days I have often courted you, many days and long nights For you often times told me that you would be my bride if you’d proved to prove loyal and to me tell your mind This very night you would be rolling in those arms of mine”.
