Everything about the city of Barrow, Alaska, is special. The northern-most city in the U.S., it is home to indigenous carvers, fishermen, researchers and teachers doing their best to preserve the native Inupiaq language. But at the center of Inupiat culture is the whale: It is its food, its symbol, and its soul. Natasha Mozgovaya set off to Alaska to see what life is like in this frozen place. Anna Rice narrates her story.

Did you miss the part where they go out in little boats and hunt the traditional way? The few whales they kill don't make any difference and I'm sure the whales would prefer to life free than in captivity up to their death. It's not them who're the problem, it's people living in cities who buy factory farmed meat and fish from commercial operations that empty the oceans. Modern farming is part of the problem. Traditional hunters are the least of the problem. It's good the government allowed them to keep their tradition alive. People in remote communities like these could also be employed to help protect the environment and report suspicious activity on the oceans.
