Just visited Buscalan for the 2nd time last weekend. So nice knowing their culture and meeting Apo. The tattoo hurts but it’s all part of the process. I think it hurts more than the machine. You can choose your own design but only from the options that they will provide.

wow! thanks for recognizing her. i think they pronounce her name with "F" sound like fah. my friends went there and got their batok tho she only accomodate or do the signature now (3 dots). her grandnieces were the one who do the batok for you then after, she will do the 3 dots (they say it represents her and her 2 grandnieces.) but i saw an interview, from an actor who had a batok, that she is fond of good looking guys and dont be surprised on how she express it. cute. maybe if u make request? you can choose your own runo stick and a design from her selected design.. i would rather ask for each symbolism but maybe i end up with only the signature.. haha..

A couple of things to clarify .Apo whang od actually and since some years ago only makes her signature tattoo , three dots which are a simbol of her and her two nieces Grace and Ilyang the two girls appearing in the video to whom she is passing the heritage of this technique.The reason is that being so old she has not enough strenght and eyesight to make the most complicated tattos which anyway you can get from the nieces or other tattoist in the village.A curiosity is that after she finished the tatto often she likes to give a short grab or rub onto your private parts, nothing malicious just a sort of joke she likes to do (you can see her doing in other videos😁)Also about the stick ,you buy it before you go to meet her, then she will add needle and prepare it and then you keep it as a souvenir.

Lol 1st of all, our ancient pre colonial ancestral markings are not simple art, like in the west, but a mark of identity, connected to our animistic belief, it's sacred, and follows a strict protocol. You don't choose the design, nor where to put it on the body. The practitioner does, and you had to earn them as a warrior through battle/killing another person, and taking their head if a man, and if a women (tho our languages are genderless, and we didn't go by western heteronormative Christian terms in regards to gender or sexuality) to symbolize their transition into womanhood, as well as beauty, and protection, starting with the legs working their way up. If no tattoos one's ancestors can't recognize you nor welcome you into the afterlife, and without tattoos you'd be seen as naked. Those who didn't have any tattoos, where frowned upon, and seen as weak, with the exemption of a few. As everyone tattooed, except those who were Muslim. Our markings were considered almost like a piece of clothing, and later the patterns and symbols survived through textile work, weaving, and pottery, besides Spanish records and manuscripts. Also Whang-od is not the last Mambabatok as she has trained and passed it down to her granddaughter(s) Grace, who has taken over. The tradition of marking ones skin survived among the hill tribes, and mountain peoples of northern Philippines Luzon (also in southern Philippines on the island of Mindanao among the Manobo people) because they were never conquered by the Spaniards, in comparison to their lowland and coastal brethren, who where sadly colonized 1st, and in a matter of a very short time, tattooing, as well as other cultural practices, and traditions where either lost or destroyed due to colonialism, and religious brainwash. They killed our Babaylan (shamans), and fed them to our sacred animal, the crocodile: tortured and massacred. Luckily more and more people are decolonizing, and working on healing from historical trauma due to 500 years (Spain, USA, and Japan) of colonialism, and there's also a revival going on, taking back skin marking, and honoring their ancestors by wearing tattoos that hasn't been seen in X hundreds of years, my self included! Also my fellow kabayans who goes to Buscalan and treats it's as some cheap tourist destination, just to get marked by Whang-od, when all she needs is rest, and be left alone should be ashamed of yourself. You're not contribution, nor helping. Only taking advantage of a people who has now become dependant on outsiders and foreigners to provide. It's neither sacred nor authentic anymore. If it was, they'd prepare an offering to get permission from the anito to welcome any stranger into their village, then Whang-od or Grace would choose the pattern/symbol for you depending on their expertise, and knowledge as a Mambabatok, and what they feel is right for you. Please decolonize, educate yourself, and heal. That's your responsibility as a indigenous person whose ancestors were colonized, and still is today mentally. Also you shouldn't get markings from a different ethnic group, just because you are ''Filipino'', unless given to you, or you're married to one from the said group/culture. Honor the right ancestors. It's still cultural appropriation to wear Kalinga patterns, if you're Tagalog, Visayan, or Manobo. Our islands were never one unified country/nation but different kingdoms and chiefdoms, and we identified with the place we were born/from, and our clan/community or village as well as ethnic group. Filipino used to only be referred by those of Spanish/Latin blood born in our islands. Natives were called ''indos''. Even the name isn't ours but of the Spanish king that colonized, invaded, enslaved us, killed, us, raped our women, and stole our gold, lands, and destroyed our own identity, and knowledge of who we are, used to be, and still are to this day: Austronesian! Also we don't tell foreigners, especially white people what they really mean, because they are so hungry to wear them. Steal them. So we protect our revival, by just calling it ''art'', or ''embellishment''.

Interesting insight. Would like to know more about your thoughts. I am an outsider and had just received markings from Buscalan. I am still trying to figure out my lineage but likely Ilocano at most. I was born and raised in the Philippines but have lived in the US. I wear, what I think, are Filipino tattoos but after the trip to Buscalan, I have been trying to understand if the “ batok” and procedure I received in Hawaii is really based on our practice and not of some one else’s such as of our Polynesian cousins. I am not expert and I’m just trying to understand. I am glad to see the revival, if that’s even the right term, recognition of our tattoo practices especially for the younger generation who are wanting to seek their identity. My hope is that the information that’s being spread is not an interpretation/translation and that these people do it for the culture and not for their own gain.
