This video depicts the construction of a Wharton Esherick inspired three legged stool. The legs are cherry, and were turned on a Robust American Beauty lathe. The seat is made from walnut, and was sculpted using the Arbortech Turboplane. Sanding was done using the Arbortech Contour Sander. The finish is General Finishes Arm-R-Seal. This video was shot on a Canon 80D.
Tools used:
Robust Lathe
Felder FB510 Bandsaw
Sawstop PCS
Festool Compound Miter Saw
Porter Cable Drill Press
Easy Wood Tools Rougher
Arbortech Turboplane
Arbortech Contour Sander
Special thanks to Arbortech Tools for the support and assistance!

Awesome stool. Awesome video. I found this video after typing "3 legged stool" into the search bar. I just learned from Nick Offerman on the latest "Making It" podcast about how a 3 legged stool will never wobble, even on uneven ground. Such a simple yet brilliant concept I had never thought of before. Anyway, I want to make one now, but have never built a stool before. I learned a lot from your video. Loved your jig for drilling the angled holes in the seat. You should make more videos! Have a great day.

Mike A-strong he's absolutely right about the lack of wobble! It's a great stool and a fun build. If you decide to make one and need any help, just drop me a line. I'm making another video now on a slab coffee table. If you're on instagram, you can follow the build (@woodbridgeworkshop). Thanks!

Great video. What were your rough dimensions on the seat? I'm in the middle of a custom stool also and debating what size it should be. Thanks

Mason Hall I started with a 14" by 14" blank and worked in from there. Just sit, check, sit, check and keep going until it's comfortable!

Nice work, I like the wedged through-dowels. (Does that make sense..?) One criticism - when dry fitting the legs, why didn't you contour the shoulders to hide the tenon / dowel part? One question - why the gloves when using the grinder?

Ant Mallett it was a shop stool used to depict how to use a particular grinding tool, which didn't require that level of clean up. Doing what you suggest is a 2 second change that wasn't necessary for this build. As for the gloves, you should use tools safely and follow the manufacturers suggested recommendations. Just because i did something a particular way doesn't mean that I'm instructing you to do so.

Thank you! I appreciate the feedback! I cut notches about 1.5" deep in the top of each leg, and after attaching the legs to the top, hammered wedges into each notch. The slight angle on the wedge allowed each notch to expand at the top, this locking each leg into place. Just add a bit of glue to each wedge and its in for keeps!

It's referred to as a wedged mortise and tenon.
