While Secretariat’s heart was indeed larger than most race horses, his hindquarters were the main source of his power, with a sloped croup that extended the length of his femur. When in full stride, his hind legs were able to reach far under himself, increasing his drive. His ample girth, long back and well-made neck all contributed to his heart-lung efficiency. Fifty years later and still holds all three Triple Crown race records. "WHAT A HORSE"

His stride was extraordinary efficient. Analysis of his stride shows that he covered ground using less energy than other horses, a huge advantage.

Yes, his sloping hip! Ironic, because in some early coverage someone was coming up with his extra sloping hip as his only confirmation fault ... his heart and his hip and his brain and his people!😊

I got to "meet" Secretariat as a guest on the farm. I approached him from the other side of the fence. He met me at the fence, raised his nose in the air and shifted his weight over his front legs as if to say "You are welcome to admire me. You may not touch me." It was 35 years ago and I will never forget that moment .

Secretariat was not only the Triple Crown Winner, but a winner in all his fans eyes. He was an amazing magnificant red horse who stood tall and regal and when he was asked to show his speed in the Kentucky Derby were excited and spellbound to see "Big Red" run and leave the pack way, way, way behind. I was. In awe of his size his beauty and Secretariat himself. I wish he had been mine. R.I.P. Big Red you have not been forgotten.

Horse racing is full of abuse. These horses are given drugs and used for a profit. You are so focused on the entertainment of horse racing you don't see it for what it really is. It's all about the money. More laws should be passed to protect racehorses from greedy, abusive people.

Didn't see the movie because I lived to see his races and him, both on the track and up close. I cried when he died and I don't cry easily. Yes he was a magnificent horse, and yes he lifted the spirits of our nation in a dark time, but he was just a different horse. I saw him in a stall, and unlike a lot of thoroughbred horses, he was calm and gentle. He was very large in size, but gentle and just a sweet horse. He exuded a sense of goodness that I can't describe in words. I was just a kid, but I knew this horse was so much more than just a horse, not because of his racing, but because he was smart and kind as well as a super athlete horse.

Most likely laminitis, we have more prevention and treatment for this condition today. Sadly a very painful condition.

@@savannahbutler5973 and from my understanding that can be caused by over feeding
@SaraNightfire1
@SaraNightfire1 8 ай бұрын
@@roguewolf5597It can be many different issues. Founder (or Laminitis), is the rotting of the coffin bone, or the bone in the horses hoof. It can be over feeding, it also can be lack of exercise, excessive exercise, lack of circulation in the legs, or a lot of other reasons. It is a brutal disease and often fatal. Even when caught early, if later there’s really not much you can do.

It was my only Ky. Derby in 1973. I was 20 year's young, and bet on Sham, a great horse himself, he just ran against a monster.

I watched him on TV win his races as a child and have watched and followed every movie, special and article on him. We have the same birthday month, I'll be 67 this year, I still get a catch in my breath and a tear in my eye when I watch him run HIS RACES, probably will until the day I pass, he was and still is: ONE OF A KIND, SECRETARIAT 😇💙.

More than having large heart- it takes true mentality / determination to WIN , competing with handicap weights, & ALL aches, pains , training of pro athlete. Then enduring all daily stud breedings after racing- so many mares impregnated. He made his mark in history like Man o’ War & Sea Biscuit. At least there’s good vids of his incredible wins, not just pics. RIP among the heavens, lovely champ of champs- u are not forgotten in times of fast ever changing “icons.”

I was a kid back then, but I won $10 per race from my grampa, and I called 4, 8 and 12 lengths, though nobody could have guessed the actual number before or during the races. Truly magnificent 🐎.

Tom Hammond is not a pleasant man. My grandpa played basketball with him for years and Hammond was very disrespectful to him and others. It's a shame he was chosen to speak about such an amazing, beautiful horse. There will never be another Secretariat. Also, my grandparents farm backed up to Claiborne and my aunt was friends with two of the caretakers kids so I got to spend some time on Secretariat's stomping grounds hanging out with him. He was always a gentleman ❤

Was set on the back of Big Red when I was young. All I remember was, , , 'HUGE!!!!!". No pictures of me on the horse, but one of my Uncle standing beside Secretariat. My Uncle worked as a trainer at Churchill Downs and rubbed shoulders with the owners and everyone. I had the run of the place, and I ran around the whole track with my sister. Never will there be another Big Red. I just watched the Secretariat movie about 2 months ago.
