That's wild, I've never seen anything like it. I can definitely imagine a killer art exhibit based around aesthetically pleasing circuit design and audio/video biofeedback. Imagine walking into a room and it's like you're inside some sort of living mechanical organism that reacts to your presence in clever ways, that would be awesome.

thats amazing! to make it even more transparent you could have a little LCD screen which shows what notes or signals the arduino code is putting out or even just show the code.

It's like looking at an old naturally asperated combustion engine. You open the hood and you can just identify every part in less than a minute. You can plainly see the hoses, belts and wires that connect things. There's a charm and satisfaction to that.

Glad to know I'm not the only one who thinks capacitors, resistors, and chips are too pretty to cover up. I always put clear back panels on my DIY stuff so I can admire the circuit boards. Never thought of building an actual circuit-sculpture though... that's cool as heck.

Might be a bit late to the party, but if I can, I would like to pitch in with some information regarding the D-beam, as I just worked with a robot platform utilising the sensor. The sensor from SHARP, the D-beam as it were, functions much like a camera imaging sensor, with an important distinction. Whereas a camera measures the colour of light, the D-beam sensor measures the distance by using trigonometry. It accomplishes this like so: A diode sends out a beam of IR light. The light is reflected and some of it returns in the direction of the sensor. On the sensor is a secondary lens. The secondary lens sends the light onto the PSD, the position sensitive device. The position of the light spot changes the charge distribution on the PSD. This information is then read and fed to the arduino as digital signals, in this case as packages of 8-bit serial information. So by reading the angle of the incident light, the sensor can gauge the distance.

Thats typically called freeform electronics, or deadbug prototyping. I build LED cubes and other fun stuff this way. Its really not the most difficult soldering, but the most rewarding to look at.

In some cases the evolution of the minds journey doesn’t stop there, which in our hosts case I think it worked exponentially better. A perfect combination of knowledge, vision and self learned skill through a magnifying glass of childlike, genius imagination. A pity it doesn’t work for all.

@@jw1289 yep - self taught skills are a marble and great in combination of some guidance. It can be the track to a certain goal or a mentor. But in none of those options schools are qualified anymore. Perhaps for certain sheets of papers (graduation certificates and such). But mostly it is a bunch of nonsense which tries to survive by reaching (seemingly) the least necessary level of promissed education...

What would be nice is if the artist had added different colored oled strips around sections of the piece respective to the functions, e. g. Red for the filter, yellow and green for each oscillator, blue for the vca's and perhaps purple framing the whole shape and going off when the d-beam is triggered.
